Couldn't agree more. I also dare to say, with all due respect to Mangini, which is a phenomenal rock drummer, these guys together were also the real deal. Portnoy should never have left DT, he was the heart of this band and the music style of the band heavily changed when he decided to leave.
I just wanted to know if I was the only one who would think the same about Mike Portnoy. Thank God I’m not the only one who believe that Portnoy was the heart of DT. Mangini is like the AI playing drums, and Portnoy, and amazing human being playing drums with all his heart!
@YTDSoM - Man, I'm a HUGE Ike Mangini fan, through and through. Since 1999. I always wanted to hear him with DT due to his work with LaBrie, and his workwith them was in my opinion "otherworldly". But this isn't to take anything away from Mangini - never. But Mike Portnoy is a "different" entity. He is a genius. Look how easily he traverses these insanely complex pieces, with natural flow, ease, and comfort - all the while giving us entertainment from his on stage theatrics. He's having fun up there, otherwise unencumbered by the arbitrary restraints of having to strategise on anything other than the flow of music from the ethers to the master Portnoy's hands. This may sound like a stretch, but he's one of the most underrated drummers on the planet. Thank you Mike Mangini for making one of my dreams a reality, and doing an impossible job with DT, and the toxic sect of the fan base with maturity, humility, and grace. Thany you DT, being open to the king of drums to return to his throne. The anticipation is palatable for new material. And thank you to Mike Portnoy, for being so generous with your talents. It's rare to witness such a phenomenon, whose legend will be looked at with reverence, generations from now.
I heard Pull Me Under on the radio in 1992. I was 15. I was like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!?!?! WHO IS ON DRUMS?!?!?!?!?!?! Blew up my 15 year old drumming mind. That was also the year my hand started. I was a blend of Lars, Porcaro, Lombardo and Portnoy. A wannabe anyways! 😂

While I live Mangini, I agree. Portnoy ALWAYS delivered those crazy fills and grooves. Remember his drum riffing on the Score DVD in under a glass moon? Man he went balls out on that one! 👍🍻.
20 years ago. incredible performance. I always loved moment at 11:27, "Hell's Kitchen" part with tubular bells, when Mike throws stick. full energy and joy
As a beginner studying drumms from the start, I'm going to quit. Bye. 😅😅😅😅😅 I onow this video since 2007 and know this in my ear from beginning to start. Now, it feels Mike is just playing in a drum shop. Amazing.
DEAR *GOD!!!!!!!!!* I miss this!!!! Been a DT fan since forever, active member of YTSEJAM for years and seen (and met) them countless times…..this video is a PURE TREAT for my soul going back decades of my memories. THANK YOU FOR THIS
@@SHSRaiderBand21- But for him it might be Mike. I respect both deeply, but they're different. Their drumming matches their personalities. Neil is calm, balanced, nuanced, creative, inquisitive, studied, dynamic. Mike is effortless, fun, explosive, detailed, communicative, daring, fearless. At least to me.
Every so often I watch this again, to laugh at how out of time Portnoy comes in and his little smile looking at Jordan while Petrucci obliterates him with his eyes XD for things like this he is my favorite drummer haha
I saw Dream Theater in Paris in 2000, The Spirit Carries On tour. The greatest of progressive rock. Images and Words (1992) and Awake (1994) are the two best progressive metal albums of all time. Portnoy with Mike Mangini are the greatest drummers of all time in Progressive Rock, Mangini holds 5 world records for speed on drums!
I apologize to the musicians and the audience for my burst of insults in the middle. No offence meant to you, all offence meant to those responsible for putting the commercial into this masterpiece.
It's still very clear that this drums intensity is the only style that matches the Dream Theater's real sound. I not saying Mike Magini is not good, it's different from not matched..

Can’t wait to see this monster kit live on stage again 🤩
Same here bro!
Me too! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷

This performance alone deserves an Oscar. Honestly, this is the real deal, this is THE music, this is a masterpiece.

Almost 20 years after and I’m still coming back to watch this. It is so amazing watching them play together.
Right!!
And we shall see them together again now that Portnoy is back!
@@YTDSoMCan't wait! I'll sell a kidney to get there if I have to! 😂
His drumming is so....magnetic. I can't stop to watch!!! Mike is a genius🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥

This is what started my dream theater journey and it's changed my life.
Same here. The music teacher in my high school had this on one day and I was blown away..
@@Djcimofficial Such a great technical and musical influence they are hey :)
Same! This is the first DT performance I learnt on the keyboards. It was insanely difficult.
@@cosmic_gate476 wow as a keyboardist this is probably harder than on drums (my instrument) to be honest 😆
Me too!
Sooo glad HE's back!
Portnoy will always be my favorite DT drummer. His bubinga shell kit was THE drum sound of DT.
I remember watching this when I was 14 (in 04) and had just started drumming. Still one of my favourite performances ever.
Ah yes, my personal favorite LaBrie performance
LMAO HAHAHAHA
Hahahahaha
Se tu for guitarrista com esse nick e foto, o comentário perfeito seria “check mate guitarrist” :)
HAHAHAHAHA
hahahahah fuck yeah...I dont like his singing....like a goat
This video gives me a lot of nostalgia, Portnoy for me is still the DT soul! A fusion of creativity and passion.
End is the only drum solo in history that makes sense!
That's true my dear friend

I miss the Modern Drummers festival.... This is an end of an institution and end of an integral part of any drummers.
Agreed!!!
These four had such amazing chemistry. I really miss seeing them together.
That snare sound❤
So poppy n tight. I love that for my snare
That guitar lick at the very end, wow! It ends the whole medley so epic
This is my favorite Dream Theater, and my favorite version of this piece.
Best band in the world they can play anything simply amazing.
Welcome back my boy!
He's home!

Dream Theatre: Let's play a medley!
Portnoy: Aight, so 16ths on the kick for 10 mins?
Back in the day when John Petrucci was way much cooler than NSYNC members
2020-02-17 and still watching!
Got this on dvd 2005 such a performance

Mike is simply the greatest prog drummer to walk this earth, opinions differ, i know, please allow me to have my own as hard as this may be.
A very close 2nd. Neil Peart is number 1.

It's actually good to hear Dream Theater with a mix in which the keyboard lines are not swallowed by the guitar.
Everytime I hear Hell's Kitchen, I get some serious goosebumps. Absolutely amazing!!
Bass tone of John Myung’s bass❤❤❤
Que maravilla lo veo hace doce años y aun me emociona
