    I like the fact it tells you how far off course you are, but will still show the direction of travel, so it's easier to explore somewhere, then as you get nearer to the destination, it will count down until you are back on course.
    It then will let you know a mile from your destination and say something like "10 minutes to go"
    Great for reassurance.
    I always carry a phone with maps, but it is very useful

    I think that this watch, in connection with the Garmin Connect and Garmin Explore Apps, gives you a nice package.
    I used to love my Handheld Garmin Gecko 301 GPS

    When you go off course, you can see how far off you are, but if you stop walking for a minute or so, the GPS accuracy will see improve and you will even sometimes see the off course distance get less.

    Great video, very helpful. I have this watch, but haven't tried any routes on it yet.

      It certainly gives you a great navigational experience if you put a route on the watch. Glad you found the video useful.

    Great video. Only thing to add is it was built to US military standards. Hella durable!

    Following a course works really well but it isn't foolproof. One thing to be careful of is if you course has bidirectional sections and splits and rejoins. These things can get confusing to you and the watch. If you go the wrong way on a bidirectional section the watch will say off course, then if you continue it will flip to on course but in the other direction. If you combine this with merging or splitting sections in either direction the watch can get confused by which way you want to go. The solution is to study your course before you use it so you have some idea which way you will turn before you get there. If the watch gets very confused you can stop the course, then restart the course and it should re-find the course in the correct direction.

      You are exactly right with this, most GPS units and watches get confused if you plan a section of your return along the same route you went out on.
      We discussed this at length in this months (October 2021) podcast. Our tech guy, Andy, talks through the options you have if you have a route like this. Take a listen to the podcast if you can, I know I learnt lots.

      @@ukgpstraining Thanks! I'll look for it!

      As long as the "Off Course" notification starts to count back down (Follow your direction arrow as much as you can), you will get back on course.

      @@ukgpstraining Please do a video with rain and foul weather during your hike. A GPS watch is a survival tool, especially at the price point of the Fenix series. Your camera person must be very fit, LOL.

      @@alohamark3025 Rest assured, I go out whatever the weather. If you look at my other 'walk and talks' you will see me out in snow (GPSMAP 66i), heavy rain (GPSMAP 65s). Let me enjoy the British summer a little please before we head back into winter, LOL. You can see all the 'walk and talk' videos on RUclips here - ruclips.net/p/PL3CdQf0qeR8b8GTY-ITfrDuP5CGVfNTiz

    Hi do you think it would be possible to upload a 80 mile on the instinct or would that be to much data for it to handle?

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  2 года назад +1

      That would be no problem putting that onto an Instinct.

    Can this Garmin watch give you an OS grid ref of your current position?

    • @ukgpstraining
      @ukgpstraining  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you can get any Garmin GPS Unit to give you a OS Grid reference. I hope this helps.
