When Forbidden Planet And Chaos Theory Meet - The Blippoo Box
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
- "Forbidden Planet in a box" - the Blippoo Box by the late Rob Hordijk is a wonderfully out there electronic instrument. Based on chaos theory and a love for vintage Sci-Fi it creates organic and liquid tones that keep inspiring even after a long time. Originally made in small batches and sold for about 650EUR, it became very desired among hardcore synthesizer freaks and experimental musicians. This drove prices up to the thousands even during Rob's lifetime, and even higher after. I never thought I would own one, but a lucky trade happened. In this video I tell the tale of the Third Monk (as written by Uncle Meatball), demo the Blippoo's sound and features, as well as showing modern alternatives.

Forbidden Planet haunted my dreams from early childhood, well into my teens, when I bought my first synth (a Juno-6) and started experimenting with sound. What a wonderful journey it's been, for 40+ years. 💗
For people cringing at the rarity of this amazing instrument, fret not; Meng Qi, the genius behind the Wing Pinger and Wingie 2, has optional firmware available for the Wingie 2 that turns it into a mini Blippoo Box!
edit: i didn't finish watching the whole video 😭
The Cardinal Sin! 😄
I forgot about this! I've just been using mine as a stereo mic for the last however long. Time to update my wingie2!
It is good, and even better if you have a midi controller to get access to all the adjustments at once.
I saw a photo of Moog Music Labyrinth that looks very much
like the Blippo box, with dueling shift resisters, and cross modulations between filters and oscillators.
Hainbach storytelling is my new favorite thing. The world needs more of this!
This Format is amazing. Heimbach i can really clearly picture you bringing out a complete album like this containing a story and characters. Like Peter und der Wolf but with (maybe retro) synths. Wow i am amazed!
the beginning has that Randy Greif alice in wonderland thing going ongood stuff
I feel like rewatching Forbidden Planet right now.
It was the first movie with an electronic music score. Take a look over at Movies, Music & Monsters
Half way through the story I thought, "I want to run this through my Korg Monotron Delay so badly". Guess that's ambient enlightenment. Also, if you can't afford one of these, Monome Norns has a Blippoo Box clone script that I understand is quite good. I'll find out Friday when my rotary knob midi controller arrives, which I purchased specifically for that purpose 🎉
Ah cool, I did not know about that one!
Crazy story, crazy instrument. This brightened up my day. Thank you 👍
We've needed a video like this for a while...
Brilliant video Hainbach.
you told the story really well, bravo. Loved learning about this. Will read Rob's essay tonight
The knobs can be adjusted very precisely - karatechopping complete rows 😂
I would have had hell to pay from the noise musicians if I did not go kinetic with this 😄
This is the first hainbach I have watched all the way through. Great stuff.
Such FUN stuff!!! Cheers. 🙂
I built a Benjolin and love it so much. I bought a Wingie 2, for the Blipo software.
Thanks very much for this fun video on the subject.
❤ I did a project that showed forbidden planet on a small, black and white TV out in the middle of nowhere. Discovering a blippo a few meters away would have blown even more minds. Spectacular.
nice percussion experiments!! thnx!
Great video on a fascinating instrument. The ability to mimic it on a Wingie 2 is very nice.
What a fun introduction and a crazy instrument!
Thanks, I loved what Uncle wrote so I was happy to adapt it
I was so inspired by work of Rob Hordjik on rungler circuit that wrote several implementation of the similar algorithm, including one for the korg nts-1. Rest in peace, Rob and thank you for the spark that ignite my interest in computer music once again.
Lustige Blippoo Box. Sympatisches Video.
The cat purring sounds at 11:30 ish!!
That last track on your Siat Lombarde is shattering and gorgeous!
Thank you! The EP is on my Bandcamp, all short Srine pieces
Perfect zounds.
I feel transcended.
Wow. Very nice
love my blippoo, i got the previous version with the sensor and fm on the osc's, wonderful little box rip rob hordijk.
Anything that says Twin Peak resonator on it... Should be called the Black Lodge Box... Or Agent Cooper Blooper... BOBOX? Or Wooblganger...? Wires Walk With Me...? Lol
This comment deserves more appreciation.
This would add some wonderful effects to a 50's sci-fi movie. What a wonderful instrument
It makes hungry tummy sounds. ❤
Thank you, cool video. I needed some inspiration for my ping training with my Serge VCFQ. I have been thinking whether it’s possible to do something similar to this and the Meng Qi Wing Pinger with two VCFQs. Could be fun!
毎回素晴らしい!
nice monk story, thx. what a lovable instrument. i might just have the right brethren for blipo: the jam delay llama xtreme.... you can modulate its time by cv, then run it to an normal dellay lama and split stereo in two harmonious monks for stereo warmth and panning goodness. either you send blipo to me or i send them to you when your finished with it ;-) great one again, thx hainbach!

8:13 If you ever wondered how they made the 56k modem noise.

And at the end of the second month, The disciples grew tired of the masters admonishments so they inpatiently stashed away their patch cables and planned their escape. The master slept peacefully as the disciples crept up slowly and consumed him with patch cables. Quickly tying him down and swiftly racing off to gather up chaos modules into the wagon. All was going well. They had done it, they thought... with proudly smirking faces. It was only when they got into town that they realized the master had removed all the power supplies from the cases.
Love the monks intro
If you are spending this much on equipment (for sale or NOT), you really should find someone who can get the Ocean Way HR3.5 monitors. I first heard them at NAMM, visited the factory (look up Alan Sides), and finally bought them from Sweetwater. I also bought the stands so I could hear them at ear level. $22,000 and I was angry at myself for not getting them sooner. If I can spend that much on a car, I can spend that on speakers. Love your stuff.
Bro, that was funny AF
I'd be the monk not allowed near the monastery for moaning about the scarcity and price of blippoo boxes.
Looks like Biji will make it again, see his comment
I love ❤
ive always wondered why there are no batched clones of the twinpeaks filter for eurorack. thankfully there are plenty of runglers
We need a new release of the Blipo Box!
PS I have the Wingie2 blipo firmware, already. Want a re release of the original.
Hello, I am the heir to Rob's legacy.
I worked with him for more than ten years and he was more than a brother to me and vice versa...
Many people don't know, but most of the production of blippo box was done with my hands to help Rob with his waiting list and learn alongside him.
I personally accompanied him until the end of his existence...
Since Rob died, I am now taking care of his legacy with a new company, biyiblip for a few months now.
my intention and that is what my dear friend Rob wanted, in the future I will start the blippoo again in the future I will start the production of the blippoo box again and many more things..
Greetings from Mallorca, where Rob spent his last months by my side.
@@MrGuillermofranciscoThanks for dropping here, Biyi and for letting us know about the future possibility of more Blippoos. The current crazy prices and scarcity of second-hand units is indeed it a shame as it has left those us inspired by this particular device mostly just dreaming about it for many years. From the photos I’ve seen, you and Rob shared a wonderful friendship. I’m grateful that you have continued to honour his legacy through the Gibber project and DIY events.
@@MrGuillermofrancisco Thanks very much for responding to my post.
It means a lot to me. I will keep an eye on your progress, and ’m looking forward to what comes next.
Best wishes for your success ❤❤
Oh 🤔 This has reminded me that I got a Wingie 2 some time last year, which I haven't really explored yet. I need to dig it out, update the firmware and start Blippoo-ing.
Sweet! I also need to update my Wingie
Interesting.
It either sounds better than a Benjolin or you actually figured out how it works. Such an amazing machine. EDIT: what an amazing video. So sad that Rob lived in my home town and I had no idea who he was and how legendary he'd become.
It does sound better than a Benjo - it has more depth and the twin peak filter is just lovely
rad!
and with an electric kalimba?!
Yes, that is an eKalimba from patch point. I amplified before going into blippoo.
richtig schön schräg
I've only got as far as the description... If you'd said "BBC Radiophonic Workshop" instead of "Forbidden Planet", I'd say "Wow!!! That is my absolute DREAM synth"... but "Forbidden Planet" is close enough for me... let's see (hear) what it can do..... :)
Loving the Buddhist parable! I want to replace all (some of) the knobs with very very very slow LFOs... and then I wouldn't need to play the Blippo Box... the Blippo Box could play me.
9:47 :) :) :) Very very nice.... I wonder it'd be easy or difficult to DIY one of these... ... ... SAM?!?!?!
That sounds so cool, but holy moly is it expensive. Is your homepage outdated or will you return til Lillehammer this winter?
Omg😳👍👏
I can get similar sounds from erica synths black joystick II and the polygogo
Hmm, I need to take a trip to the local university library to download that paper, i guess.
It is linked in the description
Great presentation and the box is more impressive than Taoist philosophy.
You are developing quite a collection of gear, Hainbach. Not that I begrudge you any of it. I delight in listening to what you make of it. I just wonder how you manage to find space and, before that, how you find money to keep feeding this exploration. I know we are part of this, of course. How does your wife deal with the expense and sprawl of - what is it - two (more?) studios in the house packed with gear? Anyway, cheers to her for handling it and to you for the music and analysis.
Well, this one was one in - one out. So all good. More problematic is the live sessions as I do, as I have to assemble and dissemble stuff that then overstays its welcome outside of the main studios.
$5,600 for this? Insanity.
Highest I found was 4300$ on reverb, with one offer made. So it might have sold cheaper. Sadly there is no helpful Reverb price chart for this, as its too rare.
That's how collectors pieces go, though. Scarcity and hype ascribe value well beyond the hardware itself to those looking to collect.
Also, specialized instruments bring up cost anywhere. High quality bows for a cello can go well above $1,000 or even higher because they require high skill to make and only a small audience is seeking them out, but they are important to their workflow (so to speak). Even though you could argue it is just a stick and some horsehair, and you can buy cheap bows for like $30, the quality and usability of high end bows really do make that significant of a difference to those seeking them out.
The sounds of this box could be made elsewhere, or at least approximations. But its immediacy and quality of sound is what those seeking it out are really looking for.
Gibson makes production models cheaper than that lol
You can get a little box called a wingie 2 that has a blippoo based alternative firmware
It's only insanity if you buy it twice and expect the experience to be different the second time, right?
It's the sound of my dreams..
Ps in English, q is always followed by u
This has a creamy sound to me…very cool.
A Dr. Seuss synth.
Whats the difference to a Benjolin ? I always thought Blippo Box is just another name for the Benjolin.
Benjamin does not have the twin peak filter and only one rungler. You get different sounds from it, and it is not exciting sounding as the Blippoo to me.
Two cross patched Benjolins == Blippoo?
And I thought my Benjolin v2 was the coolest thing since sliced bread!😊I admit it, this is cooler!
Do you think there is much difference? With a little patience you should be able to get very similar stuff out of it. I love mine, the After later Audio module, havent spent enough time with it yet.
Yes. Very similar abilities. It’s that form factor, though!
don't you have a room full of 50's soviet era testing equipment that does this? lol
Instant Rrose
Aliens! Aliens I tells ya!
Can I borrow that for like 2 weeks? 😬
I thought you would already have one. If you ever come to Berlin you can have a jam on it bud.
Chickenhead knobs ftw... :-)
Does anyone have an example of how this makes a track better? Or is it a geek thing?
I see it usually played solo or with other musicians as part of an ensemble. More useful in that improvisational role, or as an endless loop idea machine - it gives a 1000 samples in one session you can then cut up. Or if you want electronic timbres, like on the Forbidden Planet Soundtrack.
Logans Run!
völlig durchgeknalltes video, aber klasse idee!
:)
The Kalimba sounds like a Miku
Laura Palmer scream
sounds like cats
Bill of materials 63 euros.. Marketing tripe 5K+ euros.
This instrument was made in small numbers at an affordable price by hand by Rob and Biji. It gained a cult following from word of mouth, with no "marketing trip". That drove the USED price up.
amazing video but this thing sounds absolutely horrible, You can roast me in comments but it’s my opinion:D probably it also cost 2000 euro if you’re “lucky” enough to buy it
