Colorado deadliest trail claims another vehicle! Overlanding Schofield Pass & the Devils Punch Bowl

- This is the first video from our annual trip to Colorado. On this adventure we explorer the White River National Forest as we traverse Schofield Pass Road, Colorado's deadliest road. We found out that this road is no joke as we witnessed a very capable Toyota FJ Cruiser slide off the trail and almost roll down 100'+ feet into the Crystal River! Thankfully God was watching out for the driver and passenger and they were safely able to get out of the vehicle unharmed. Unfortunately we didn't have the expertise or equipment to winch their vehicle back onto the road but we were able to set up our Starlink so they could notify the authorities. Ultimately we ended up giving the driver and passenger a ride into Crested Butte and Colorado 4X4 Rescue and Recovery was able to come out the next weekend and recover their vehicle. This area is full of mining history and the views are incredible but I am not sure I will ever need to do this trail again!
Psalm 121:7-8
"The Lord will keep you from all harm-
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore."
Note: I do not share specific directions or coordinates of my locations. Always use caution when traveling in remote areas and know that we do NOT recommend entering abandon structures and mines as they can be unpredictable and dangerous.

When our old 4x4 club did scholfield in September 2000, it WAS DESIGNATED one way only. The hikers threw rocks at our vehicles cause they thought they shouldn't have to share the trail.
CHEERS from Colorado
Wow!
They are great sport fans also.
Nice job capturing Schofield Pass. My brother and his wife lived in Marble back in "94 for a few years. Whenever we visited, we hiked up to the pass a couple times but not over as it was always early in the year( early March )and we were hiking on many feet of snow. An all day affair. It was so beautiful, nobody else around. Enjoyed the vid!
Thank you
Beautiful video I did drive to the mill once, but I didn't like that it wasn't one way, so we didn't continue. Not to mention, we watched a rental company drive out a rolled JK! Thanks for sharing.
Let’s Roll 😮😮🤷🏿♂️
Been over it numerous times in an 88 Jeep Cherokee and a 93 Toyota minitruck and mountain bike. The biggest issue is oncoming traffic these days. Once a rockslide trapped is at the bottom of the punch bowl immediately after we passed. Had to winch through 100 yards of snow on the CB side with the rig getting dragged on the sheet metal in early July. Good times!
Sounds like it! Thanks for sharing
@@advfamilynice driving. I’d say encountering another broken down vehicle or some circumstance other than the trail itself is typical on that run.
I was a 28 year resident of Marble, CO. I have been over this route 15 -17 times. It is treacherous. Great job on this post! Cheers.
Cool, thanks!
Marble is an awesome place to be from! I went through there doing some kayaking in the 90s. Moving to Marble has always been in back of my mind. You probably don’t want more people anyways 😂
That 16th time will not be mentioned . Yes - it is a great video and now on my bucket list. When I was a student in New Zealand in the 70's a popular wall poster was of that Crsystal mill. It would be fun to visit it. I did Imogene, Black Bear etc a couple years ago - time to head back.
I completed that route Aug 4th 2024, was my first pass trail. I had a blast and your video captures the route extremely well, nice job. I went on to complete Cinnamon, Black Bear and Imogene passes during my week out in CO. I’m hooked and will return yearly!!
Glad you enjoyed it! I think Black Bear and Imogene are my favorites.
My future wife and I drove her new 86 4Runner (narrow wheelbase) from Marble to Devils Punch bowl in 1988. We were lucky that we were the only riders on the trail that afternoon. We encountered two large boulders on the road. I had to inch our way around them, as I was driving and didn't want to scratch the paint. We had already decided to turn around, but couldn't find a place to turn back. We were hit by a severe thunderstorm just as we reached the bridge below the falls, and figured we could turn back there. We hiked up just above the pool, and decided it was too risky to continue up a road we had no information on, especially with the hard rain. We drove back to the area near Marble and pitched our tent. We drove the long way into Crested Butte, and asked the Chamber of Commerce staff for information on the Pass. "We don't recommend driving on the road, due to the primitive conditions." We were also told there was a discussion on making the road one-way or closing it due to the earlier fatalities. I'm content NOT going back.
sounds like an epic adventure!
@gtit7004
According to what I have learned, the multiple fatality accident occurred during a strong thunder storm!
I definitely think it ought to be made one way down hill! There are places where it is impossible to pass!
Great video, that trail should be one way. Passing on that portion of the trail is nuts.
It was!
My friend and I camped in Crystal, we had to ditch the Tundra, the trail was too tight, we opted for the mountain bikes with BOB trailers, We had a wonderful time, You guys are Crazy, glad to see that Safety comes first. Loved your Video.
I think Mountain bikes would be sketchy too! thanks for watching.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing! I want to get my '21 4WD T4R off road soon, but I am not ready for this! lol
I love the 4Runners but this is definitely a trail you want to work up to!
A couple of points. First at the beginning you flipped CB and GS. Crested Butte is south and Glenwood Springs is north of Schofield Pass. Also, when ever you pull over for oncoming traffic, always pull over up hill, not down hill. Per colorado law, the vehicle traveling uphill has thr right of way. Not always practical, but it is the safer way to handle traffic on tight mountain trails. Lastly, as we update trail signage, we are including GMRS channel info, but since only one in one humdred trail users actually read those signs, it will take awhile for it to catch on
Thanks for the info!
Kinda unusual most forest roads the person going down has the right of way. @@advfamily
@@herbbutters4576disagree, uphill has r o w everywhere I've been, over my most recent 60 years.
@@herbbutters4576 I've only ever heard of the uphill traffic having the right of way. It's easy for the downhill traffic to stop, then resume travel, but not always the case for uphill drivers.
Haven’t been over that trail in more than 20 years. Never again for me in these days. Far too many folks. In my day, you would be the only traveler. Maybe a hiker or two, or a motorcycle.
That would be nice. Thanks for sharing!
I agree, 1973 was my last time in a jeep. Girl friend walked it.
Damn, this trail should be designated as only one way, either going up or down. So dangerous 🤣
That would certainly make it easier!
I am for that too. Did this trail in a driving rain with heavy fog. Chrystal river was overflowing deeply onto the road. Ok, in truth, the road was the river.... no problems like this.... pay attention to the road.
That sounds crazy!
Yup!!! I've been on it and agree 10000%
You would think, but that makes too much sense.
Did this coming from the south 25 years ago in a TJ. Glad to have the narrower track and no oncoming traffic in the section above the Punchbowl. Wife did get out and walk the scarier part. Can’t blame her as the passenger gets the view into the abyss when going downhill.
Nice!
Learn the skills to assist others in trouble; they might save your butt someday too. I saw at least one winch in your convoy, plenty of big rocks next to FJ you could have used as a winch point along with another vehicle on the other side as an anchor. Practice these types of recoveries at home prior to hitting the trail.
Thanks. We have practiced and completed several successful recoveries but I am not afraid to admit that this one exceed our equipment and skills. (Though I hope to change that for the next time.) Colorado 4X4 Rescue and Recovery had to anchor the vehicle to the side of the mountain about 100' feet up and we didn't have that equipment with us. Additionally, they had to daisy chain 3 vehicle on the up hill side to safely pull the vehicle back on to the trail. They do this all the time and they stated this was one of their longest missions. Checkout their post for more info. facebook.com/share/p/x4SUbuych7sufh8d/
@@advfamily I apologize for coming across so “judgmental “ I love your channel and the personal banter between you guys, I miss those times when my friends and I would go hunting or 4 wheeling; seems time has changed most of us and taken those that aren’t.
Your light hearted approach to off roading is contagious 👍🏼
no worries and thank you!
Not to rag on you. If you are going to install recovery equipment on your vehicle - you should learn how to properly use it. There is no sense having it if it is just for looks. That FJ could have been saved in about a half hour's time with 2 vehicle winches easily and with just 1 winch a little longer time. Learn to use snatch blocks and soft shackle recovery spools. They would have made some good redirects to enable your vehicle with a straight side pull with 1 winch per axle.
It all looks good in the super market parking lot though.
Only wheel what u can afford to loose. I have pulled many vehicles out of there in the last 25 years. Walk threw it 1st. Not a hard trail just dumb people over there abilities. In stock rigs.
Exactly.
I'm surprised that FJ was alone. Not very smart to wheel a trail that difficult on your own......
I did it once back in the early 2000s. Downhill in a stock Samaria! I thought it was pretty easy, but there was no up hill taffic! That would have been nasty! That probably was what happened here!
That trail really ought to be designated one-way only!
I'm thankful I own a Power Wagon so I don't have to attempt this pass! I thought I've drove some sketchy trails and shelf roads but this one is worse than any I've done.
Don't get me wrong , I'm not ragging on you , but after doing Schofield and many other roads in the area and over to Pitkin , St. Elmo etc , etc in the '60s in Willys Jeep universals , old pickups and other assorted junkers . I get a kick out of watching the great adventure of driving modern , often purpose modified four wheel drives . I get it , peering out your side window into infinity can pucker you up whatever you are driving . Back then usually NEVER saw another vehicle on those roads all day . Have fun and keep the greasy side down !
😂 thanks for the feedback and I agree i am a little spoiled with my modern vehicle and all my modern comforts and reality is it doesn’t mean i am more capable just usually more comfortable.
0:48 double check that map lol
Beautiful scenery and video.
Thanks and nice job! I was wondering if anyone was going to catch the fact that I got my north and souths wrong!
I've driven Schofield several times in five-decades of 4-wheeling in the Rockies. I consider it one of the most dangerous 4WD trails in the country. Not only is the trail steep, with much of it on shelf, but the trail surface is loose slide rock. This is one trail where a locking rear differential is almost a necessity because any excessive wheel slip can not only cause the vehicle to slide, it can cause the rock under the wheels to slide, as well. It is also essential to have a low-range first gear that is sufficient to maintain very slow vehicle speed without using the brakes. Driving downhill on the slide rock is very similar to driving on ice--the brakes can almost immediately lock up on even a light brake application. Schofield is not a trail for inexperienced 4-wheelers--it is a trail more than willing to kill you if you let it.
Perfect description!
Wow, That ride looks pretty technical. so if you had your choice would you ride the worlds scariest
roller coaster to this? Thanks for the video. Fine Job!
Interesting question Ody! I think I would do this because at least I have a little sense of control…
My sphincter puckered just watching the video
Definitely on my bucket list
Enjoy but be careful!
Not into scaring myself that much and this from a guy who jumps out of perfectly good airplanes...
On maneuvering around the FJ, why was that guy between both vehicles?
When doing these trails there should be a designated gmrs freq that everyone is one on that way they can coordinate who goes the trail first
Great idea!
How did those guys go off the road like that??
1 of 2 possibilites. 1. Alcohol or drugs, or 2. Not paying attention.
You’re out wheeling with multiple vehicles, each with a winch and presumably some recovery gear, and the best you can do is give them a ride? You should have your off-road mancard taken and burned.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
I like and subscribed!!!!!!
Thanks!
We did it our 2005 Wrangler TJ we had for two months and it was bone stock. We did not see the bridge, it was covered in snow. The snow was the worst part.
I can't imagine having to deal with snow as well... crazy!
We were there in August of 2005. The creek was running under the snow.
What roads did you take to your camp site? Great video
The camp site is on unnamed spur off Crystal River near Lizard Lake. It barely fit 2 vehicles and no room for a ground tent.
Man, that looked pretty hairy. Not a fan of the infamous shelf road either. This one looks very scary. Were you able to enjoy it a bit, or was it a white knuckler heart pounder?
It was stressful for sure but the views and scenery made it worthwhile!
Your lost dude!….there is no way you can be south of crested butte and north of glenwood springs🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not all who wonder are lost but I usually am! 😂
Yes that confused me too.
The guy standing between the 2 vehicles has zero common sense. I'm guessing he was the guy who drove off the road.
He was safe! He was spotting the other guys! If the Toyota had rolled off, it wouldn't have hit him.
@@mahbriggs Yeah....right...😆 Do you work for MSNBC or CNN by chance. "Don't believe what you see, believe what we tell you" 🤣

What a moron! Do you have any common sense? Or do you just like to spew hate everywhere? Learn a little before you comment! You would look less like a fool!
100%. I'm glad the Colorado Buffs fan got him out of there. People who don't offroad don't realize how easily a truck can slide in an off camber situation, especially with all that loose gravel. So sketchy!
@twotwentyswift
For people who don't four wheel, I understand that you aren't familiar with how vehicles are spotted! Also how vehicles slide sideways on off camber situations as shown in the video!
Please use some common sense and learn a little! Don't make a fool of yourself!
Was the Tacoma even aired down? One of the close shots seemed to indicate no. If so, major mistake. If not, then my eyes are just oldni guess.
Great video.
Hey, how do you like that cell phone thingy on top of truck?
Thanks and I like WeBoost cell phone booster. It works pretty well as long as it can reach a tower which isn’t always the case.
Nice....keep em coming...ya cant fix stupid
Thank you!
I believe Black Bear pass is the most dangerous pass in colorado. Or America.
Yes apparently Black Bear is the most dangerous (most crashes) but supposedly Schofield is the most deadliest as more than a dozen people have actually died on it.
Who's the person not paying attention in that blue FJ!? There's like 10 ft of road there!!!!
People like this get trails shut down. If you can't drive, don't go!!!
If you had used one UPHILL Vehicle to anchor your winch line in a DOUBLE and used it to pull his rear up on the road it would have taken 20 minutes !!! LEARN TO USE YOUR TOOLS

Not a bad way to go!
Was the dude texting and driving to end up off the road or what? I mean if it was wide enough to go past him something must have distracted him, or maybe just inexperience.
does that Tacoma owner like his ko3 tires?
Yes I do!
Could one of those giant Earth Roamers make it over schofield pass? 😅
Nope and I wouldn’t want to be there if it tried!
Excellent video... but that particular trail is NOT on my bucket list!
Thanks for watching
When you separate so far from others in your party you make that much more difficult for others to pass. Stay tighter. together and fly your drone later. 🙄
Uphill has the right of away. Obviously the SXS doesn't know or care about rules of trail riding.
Any idiot can buy a SXS. They tear up trails and many have no sense whatsoever. Can often be found with a loud stereo, ripping up the trails, with beers in-hand.
True, but often it comes up to who can get to a pull-off easier.
UTV didn’t have right of way. They rarely have right of way.
Wow, did you read HotRodMonza's comment? You could have helped this guy out without calling the National Guard. Learn to use your equipment in the city OR backcountry.
I prefer destination based excursions. Taking a dangerous road just because it is dangerous seems......Dangerous.
I hear you! Stay tuned for the next video because the destination is going to be great! In this case I admit the journey was a little sketchy but I thought the sights were pretty awesome too…
That is called very poor driving skills!!! If you know how to drive this is not a scary trail at all unless you don’t like shelf roads.
Yes, learn your junk or stay home.

Yep. No thanks. Not into scaring myself that much. And this from a guy who jumps out of airplanes for fun.
I certainly don’t need to do it again but you won’t find me jumping out of a perfectly good airplane either! 😂
@@advfamily Actually, there doesn't seem to be any such thing as a perfectly good airplane. LOL
Great! Then maybe I will just stick to my Tacoma
Never take a Toyota to do Jeep things 🇺🇸
The reason I don't do trails like that, is because of people like beer drinking bubba with his rig hanging by a thread. I also don't participate in any recoveries which might put me or my rig at risk. I've been wheeling for 50 years, and seen too many things go wrong. Bear in mind that the idiot that got into that predicament is the idiot you'll be working with, No thanks. I have zero interest in any of those must do Colorado trails.
Your vehicles are too big. You fools should be driving side x sides.
It's all relative . Drive a surplus 6X6 in the mountains , (obviously not Schofield , wont make the corners) and a Suburban seems agile !
Why on 🌎wouldn't you air down on those rocky roads??
Did that and many other roads "back in the day" on 7.00-15 , 7.50-16 , 6.00 15 , 6.50-16 tires running 35 to 50 psi . That busted slide rock doesn't care how fat and soft your tires are , steady slow speed and proper technique win the day .
