  • The Tokyo Subway system is second to none made up of two rail operators Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. This video shows the history of all 13 lines that make up the Tokyo Subway System drawn to scale on an easy to read map. We start with the Ginza Line in 1927 and finish nearly 100 years later in 2008 with the completion of the Fukutoshin Line.

    There is one small mistake in the video can you guess where?

      Fukutoshin sen ends in Shibuya, not Shinjuku! Very enjoyable video.

      I see what you mean. Yes the text on the left hand side says Shinjuku. Good pick up. That means two small mistakes. There could be more.

    I'm so glad that these videos are becoming a trend. I'm a huge transit nerd and watching these networks grow makes me so interested.

      Agree Blue Bomber. To see it graphically condensed into 6 minutes really highlights the work that went into building the Tokyo Subway to how we enjoy it today.
      Many kms of the 304 km were dug out of the ground by had in the early days.

    It might have been interesting to show how far through-service on the private railways extend subway service much further out into the suburbs, using dashed lines or something like that.

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      Sure brmnyc that would be cool considering how far some of the line run e.g. Yokohama and beyond.

    Another great map. I especially like how I'm able to visualize the incremental growth of the network.
    Something I noticed is how long it took some lines from first open section to completion. The longest is Hanzomon line(25yrs)( if you ignore the joint extension of Mita and Namboku lines to Meguro in 2000), followed by Yurakucho(20yrs), and Ginza line(12yrs).
    The shortest was Fukutoshin (1yr),followed by the Hibiya line (3yrs) and Tozai line(5yrs).

      You make a good point Tanami Playman. A lot of blood sweat and tears went into creating the first dozen or so lines all by hand and shovel. So yeah 10 to 15 years wasn't uncommon.
      The other thing that's struck me is the long time since the last line the Fukutoshin Line in 2008. It's not likely that the next subway line will start before 2025 more like 2030 a full 22 years with no subway construction. Crazy for Tokyo I hope the city doesn't suffer because of it.

      Yeah 1927 was when the subway began in Tokyo. As this time underground subway s were already in operation in London for over 50 years.

    For some reason I really want Tokyo metro to have an expansion (e.g. new line, extension of Oedo Line)

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      Sure additional train access is always a good thing. Where would you have the Oedo line expand? Continue west into Saitama. It's already the longest line by 15 km.

    • @tjjs7999
      @tjjs7999 3 года назад

      Idk it would be interesting and many more people in outer Tokyo could access the metro
      Also i would definitely ride it as riding Tokyo metro is my hobby lol

    I like how the imperial palace crated a little circle gap around it, Every minute a metro train passing by the palace. And this is unnecesary to say but Oedo line looks like a fried chicken surrounding tokyo.

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      Yes I think there was a law that stated that no construction or tunnelling could be done under the grounds of the Imperial Palace.
      The Toei Oedo line is the longest of the subway lines in Tokyo. It has a dual purpose to also distribute emergency relief items around Tokyo as a cargo line in times of disaster. I'm not sure where but there is a warehouse built next to the line that stocks the emergency supplies.

      I think whats interesting that as a person that lives in the region of funabashi formerly, The keiyo line to main platforms transfer is a long painful process. Tokyo underground platforms have musashino line and keiyo line and its very far from the platforms that has the keihin touhoku, yamanote and all other things. You will use a straight conveyor belt for a long time, then climb a floor down and walk to the over escalator then to the other and finally to the last one. It hurts my knees since i have to walk a very long distance, The straight conveyor belt place i’ve mentioned has a lot of disney adverts, Probably because keiyo line or the musashino lines one of the goal was to help people get to maihama where disneyland tokyo is based at. So that could be the reason of the disney adverts.
