A great video with most of the facts correct and observant analysis to go with it. I also respect you having a strong opinion about Kee as a guitarist compared to Norum as he's not from the hard rock Gary Moore/Michael Schenker school as John Norum (he's clearly more of a Jeff Beck type player at heart) - but considering him average or boring is something I can't understand. I can understand not liking his melodic major scale solos like Superstitious for being too poppy and sweet, but his solo on Ready Or Not for example easily goes toe to toe against Norum's bluesy shredding as well. IMO he's one of the greatest guitarists ever. It's just the first time I've seen him being called kinda boring, which I don't get at all. Btw, I forget what a great guitarist Joey Tempest is as well, the clip of him just casually riffing on 7 Doors Hotel on acoustic is astonishingly good. There's also some clips of him playing absolutely fiery blues licks in soundchecks. Figures, as he's a proper genius level musician who plays every instrument and wrote a great majority of the songs just by himself. So much of Europe is just based on Joey's vision and musicality that I wouldn't be at all surprised if he had control freak tendencies in the 80s.
Yeah, it seems I didn’t give Kee a fair chance initially. If I was doing the video now, I’d do a bit more research on him. Also, as this video took me quite a while, I spent a lot of time watching those early Norum solos and for whatever reason they just really resonated with me haha.
I think Kee is definitely better than average as a player, but I also think his playing is very boring. Some demanding tapping licks and amazing fluent runs, but I absolutely hate his tone and many of the melodies. That said I still listen to ”Out of this world” from time to time and enjoy some of it. Hate the overall sound of the album though. Oh, and that bumblebee solo Kee used to play... What a waste of time.
Europe came to Brazil 3 times; I went to see them all 3 times. I was never disappointed, and they're still one of my favourite bands. And I totally agree, Children of this Time is an absolute banger. Great video and summary 👍
One of the things I've always loved about this band is how many different styles they've tried since the beginning. Their early 80s stuff were the heaviest, balls out euro-metal albums they would ever try. The mid to late 80s (Final Countdown and Out Of This World) were the most commercially inclined they would ever do. Good, but not great . Prisoners In Paradise is largely forgettable. Their comeback albums from 2004 to now have all shown a musical progression from commercial (but heavy) modern guitar rock , to more laid-back, but really well done blues-oriented (Last Look At Eden to Bag Of Bones). And their last two albums-War Of Kings and Walk This Earth (my favorites since their comeback) have this adventurous 70s proto-metal sound of Rainbow and Purple, which is Europe at their most natural. So, in a nutshell, they are an incredibly talented band that has something for almost every fan of Rock and Metal. And their live albums (Almost Unplugged and Live At Sweden Rock) are both incredible !
I have seen a lot of music documentaries, and this is one of the best I've come across. Very well laid out and explained. The host is very clear-spoken and concise, and is very fair assessing the band's strengths and weaknesses. I have since gone back and explored the band's earlier work. Hoping the host will do more of these. He's awesome!

Some additional details for you here, Zack, from this active Canadian EUROPE fan and researcher. There was one error in the front part of this video, Zack....you used a pic of John Leven as a stand-in for Peter Olsson. It might've been better to just use a stock text screen saying something like 'Peter Olsson-Photo Not Available'. In terms of Peter, he had actually broke up with his girlfriend before she started dating Joey, and he lapsed into alcoholism to cope, but he took full responsibility for his behavior later on, when he gained the wisdom that comes with dealing with one's past. His musical direction was more into 'guitar masturbation', whatever that is, and didn't get the idea of playing choruses with his bass. He'd also end up bouncing around from band to band, before I think retiring from the industry. With Mic Michaeli, his role was more of an expansion slot, created when he took keyboard duties off Joey's hands, because Joey was also the group's original keyboard player, which kind of made things awkward during live shows, where Joey was probably hiding behind the bank of keys during some songs. For Tony, and this is just merely speculation on my part, but I think that the TRUE reason he left was because the idea of taking his talent worldwide scared him badly, and his ambivalence to his duties then probably caused him to become lazy. He probably was too afraid to admit such to those he'd been with in the band for those 5 years, and just couldn't do it, fearing they'd be pissed off with him, to the point of probably wanting to fistfight him over it. So, Tony just simply faded off, and never returned to the stage with the group again(outside of doing 2 autograph projects for the 30th anniversary of the debut album for the group AND a 10-guitar charity auction, both in 2013). Also, another big reason Norum left the group on Oct. 31, 1986 was that it was eventually found out that EUROPE's manager at the time, a Thomas Erdtman, ended up having the contracts written to where the money that the group made(in which both Norum and Marcello got dinged by this) was funnelled into his own bank account. Norum once caught Thomas spending their money to take his(Norum's) mom out on a date somewhere. As for Marcello, he actually had some personal issues with the group regarding band seniority, where he was promised, by Erdtman, that he'd get to have an elevated role in the group upon entry into it(getting his songs on albums, writing credits, et al), only to be told by the band members that that wasn't going to happen. He got conflicted, and started binging on alcohol and drugs to try to cope with it, but that stuff eventually took over his mentality, screwing him up. It was in 1989 that the group voted 5-0 to terminate Erdtman's services. Also, when EUROPE went on hiatus on Mar. 15, 1992 in Portsmouth, England after the last leg of the 'Prisoners In Paradise' tour, the members found out, thanks mostly to Erdtman, that they had a lot of high taxes to pay when they got back to Sweden. They lost a LOT of stuff they accumulated while on the road, and it took them YEARS to pay off those bills. All of them eventually did though, and they'll say now that that doesn't affect them anymore. EUROPE also, after Dec. 31, 1999's concert with both Norum and Marcello present(a pure fans' ultimate dream, by the way...XD) appeared at Stockholm's Hard Rock Cafe to finally collect their awards for sales of the compilation album '1982-1992', which had 17 tracks on it from all eras of the group. In terms of Kee Marcello, after it was announced in 2003 that EUROPE would get back together full time with Norum at guitar, Kee stated that he didn't stand for the same creative and musical direction that EUROPE currently performs in concerts today, and that he said there were talks of the group going to a 6-member version for a while, but he said he couldn't do it, feeling like he was probably going to encroach on Norum's turf, and said he figured that Norum would feel the same way. But at the same time, Kee said that he was happy that the EUROPE band name and brand was active once again, and performing in front of millions of happy fans all around the world. Just figured I'd help you fill in some gaps here, Zack. =) And sorry for the long read, but it was necessary here. XB
There's a bit of guesswork in your post. I'll add some things. • Norum left because he didn't want to be doing playback and interview tours without shows - stated many times by all concerned. • Kee bought Norum's share of the band for 1,000,000 krona so business wise - he did have an equal share but not a creative one. • The Millenium reunion with both guitarists was done in exchange for the band's debt being paid. • Marcel Jacob (Norum collaborator and one time bassist for the band before swapping back with Leven) stated on the melodicrock forum before his untimely passing that Tempest, Leven, Michaeli and Haugland were split on which guitarist to get back. Joey and John wanted Norum, Mic and Ian wanted Kee. Joey suggested the two-guitar lineup as a compromise but Norum refused to share solos and said "only if he plays chords". Kee was let go the day before they did their "reunion" photoshoot and has never been paid back his 1M kr. The only member he's had contact with since is Ian.
Ragin' Ronic Great research Bro,..I would like to ad that insider rumors about Norum exit also mentioned his ambitions of a solo carrier and his fading trust in the Europe project. He wanted more Heavy Metal in the Band...back to his roots so to speak.
How do u know all those information about all of them, specifically john norum? How do u know that john norum's mother dated with thomas erdtman? Please answer
Joey released "A Place to Call Home" in 1995, six years before the UK Office came out in 2001, it sounds like Ricky Gervais and the office tried to steal his melody! I can't believe that! Joey is a gifted writer and musician!
Dude when you showed bassist peter Olsen that was an early picture of John Leven! When you went to show John Leven you showed Peter Olsen, again I'm a huge fan and even met the entire band a lovely bunch of guys! Just saying good video info overall though cheers!
Didn't expect to hear so much stuff I liked! That early stuff HOLY CRAP! My mind was blown. Didn't get too much into them cause of the keyboard, but first guitarist was just awesome.
Kee Marcello was an incredible player! His guitar work on "Out of This World" is unmatched. His tapping technique in solos for "More Than Meets the Eye" and "Just the Beginning" to me were a premier to what Nuno would be doing with Extreme years later. He certainly could write great melodies in his solos. Not taking anything away from John Norum. I loved his playing as well but I think Kee did contribute a lot more than just "Flight of the Bumblebee". He took Europe to the next level!
Metal School thanks for this, I wouldn't have known about the later albums if I hadn't watched this and their later albums are really good, so when making other video's I'm hoping your updating them as well, thanks
John Norum's been my fave guitarist since I heard that first album. Unmistakable tone, just a virtuoso. As good as Kee Marcello is, the music with him just didn't have the feel that makes Norum a legend. They're one of the greatest bands ever.
It is a shame that most people only know The Final Countdown and Carrie. They are way more than that. I love their whole catalog including everything they have done since reuniting in the early 2000's with Start From The Dark album. My favorites have always been the self titled debut album and Wings Of Tomorrow. John Norum is my favorite Europe guitar player, but Kee Marcello is amazing as well
....I'd always hoped & wanted Europe to be back with botha guitarists together.🎸🎸.. I never knew (before this vdo) that John & Marcelo actually did play together at New Year's Eve, Stockholmes 1999. I feel that becoz of their different 🎸 playing styles, it would be great if they worked it out & be together in the band creating some good & unique musics...like the Maidens with Smith back & Ger still in the band. 🎼🎸🎸🎸👍. @20:18 i love the way Joey played the🎸 and sang 7 doors hotel. As a 🎸 player m'self for the last 37-38 yrs, i can easily confirm that Joey is a pretty good guitar player himself apart from being a superb & great vocalist, a song writer, a frontman, a performer and as a musician. 🎼🗣️🎤🎸🎶😍👍...
You're right about Last Look At Eden being a big surprise compared to their previous two (newer) records. It usually takes Joey Tempest a couple of albums to fine tune his songwriting into a style that really catches on. It was the same with The Final Countdown album.
I remember not knowing that Prisoners in Paradise had come out and finding it in a music store. The 1st thing I noticed was how good the guitar was on the whole album. Kee Marcello was amazing in that album and it's easily my favorite Europe album and one of my favorite albums from that era.

I was 7 when I first heard The Final Coundtown. Back in communist Poland I would never be able to see them live. 😔 35 later Europe has still special place in my heart. I had VIP tickets for Europe last summer.. tour never ended up happening because of Covid..😔.. I was really hoping to meet them in person.. John Norum is still in my top 5 favorite guitarists!
Always had a huge man crush on John Norum lol His sister Tone is pretty good too. I really like the B-side of Final Countdown, thanks to Norum's playing. In that sense Total Control is a spiritual successor to Final Countdown, but less keys more bluesy licks.

I think your city must to give a "honourable sir" medal to Norum and Tempest. They made your city famous
@@trueriddler4145 Upplands Väsby had a vibrant scene in the 80's. Several bands came from there. The legendary doom metal band Candlemass came from there and actually came at second place on that Rock-SM contest Europe won.
@@alaksandutheexorkizein7634 oh really? Candlemass? I love them!
@@trueriddler4145 Well more correctly it was Nemesis, pre-Candlemass, that was part of the competition but yeah :)
First 2 albums were brilliant!!! Wish they had stayed doing songs like seven doors hotel and scream of anger. Norum is amazing
Wow thanks for doing this on this legendary heavy rock Band.
Just going back and watching your back catalog, and while I really enjoyed this...you've gotten SO much better in 4 years. Cheers!
To not mention ”Seven Doors Hotel” is a crime. Masterpiece 🔥🔥🔥
Sad to see this is your only video. Great stuff!
Very nice video, i love this Band. Greetings from germany.
For englisg to be Joey's second language those vocals are KILLER!!!🤘🖤🤘
In Sweden the kind of mustasch Joey have grown there in the early days is called a "moped mustasch" ;)
Great band. I have an appreciation for so much of their stuff.
Was able to meet them in the USA a few years back. A really great group of guys.
Joey Tempest is an incredibly good Vocalist
I have seen a lot of music documentaries, and this is one of the best I've come across. Very well laid out and explained.
The host is very clear-spoken and concise, and is very fair assessing the band's strengths and weaknesses. I have since
gone back and explored the band's earlier work. Hoping the host will do more of these. He's awesome!
Hey thanks so much! Glad you liked it. I have several more on my channel so feel free to check those out too. Thanks for the nice words and thanks for watching!
@@MetalSchoolChannel Hey, I just had a surreal moment when I just watched a Lifetime movie called: Kidnapping of The Judge's Daughter(I think), and an actor in it looked just like you. Same clothes too. Is that you??
@@jefftait9353 haha, nope! I’d love to see any Lifetime movie where someone is wearing a Manilla Road shirt tho!
@@MetalSchoolChannel Lol. Fair enough. It looked like the same colour hoodie and red t-shirt as yours, but I couldn't really read what yours said, or the guy in the movie. You're right though, if it's not you, highly unlikely his would also read: Manilla Road!
they were so good in the early days, real heavy real metal.
IMO they're just as heavy but darker now. War of Kings is epic. That and Wings of Tomorrow are thier 2 best albums.
Another thing that might be interesting to hear. I met and spoke with Ian haugland recently and asked him about new Europe music and he said that maybe next year they will release a new album
This was great, I'm really looking forward to seeing them in a few days!
Lucky! Bet it will be a great show
@MetalSchoolChannel I'm sure it will be, they're doing 2 sets one and a half hours, a 20 min break then just over an hour. Playing songs from all 11 albums, it's gonna be immense!
Joey Tempest really good on the acoustic guitar.
Love your video almost as much as I love Europe. Thanks!
What a profound analysis on the band history!!!!!!!!!! WONDERFUL!
Rock the night. The song that got me into hard rock.
Excellent document. John Norum had everything to compete for America audiences.
Out Of This World is such a hidden gem in the treasury of rock and roll. I am a great fan of John Norum but Kee Marcelo did an awesome job in this record.
Their first 2 albums is KILLERS. Love the band now in later days also !
awesome channel man, got to find some great music...music i didn't even know nor grew up with as i was a baby during 80's. keep it up!!! have a sub from Argentina
Their first two albums are absolute bangers. I lost track of them. Have to remedy that.
And sorry for the long read, but it was necessary here. XB
✌👏👏
Please answer

people only remember europe for the final countdown..
Thanks for taking the time to make the video and share it
Great! You've done your homework on these guys. I was 12 when I bought The fiirst LP. Great job! Greetings from Sweden!
Magnus Söderström
Joey released "A Place to Call Home" in 1995, six years before the UK Office came out in 2001, it sounds like Ricky Gervais and the office tried to steal his melody! I can't believe that!
Joey is a gifted writer and musician!
This is fantastic video i never seen the video of this.
*sorry for my wrong English*
Dude when you showed bassist peter Olsen that was an early picture of John Leven! When you went to show John Leven you showed Peter Olsen, again I'm a huge fan and even met the entire band a lovely bunch of guys! Just saying good video info overall though cheers!
John Norum's first solo album was a true showcase of his talent. To me, it's one of the best guitar albums of all time. Still listen to it today.
Didn't expect to hear so much stuff I liked! That early stuff HOLY CRAP! My mind was blown. Didn't get too much into them cause of the keyboard, but first guitarist was just awesome.
Great Video!!!!
Their History is very interesting, but i would be good, if you tell us something more about the new stuff
Could you make another video about it?
Im so glad, you straighten it out, that you mean the band and not the continent, I would have confused the 2 :D
very interesting , great job ! thanks for making this , cheers from France !!!!
It is a shame that most people only know The Final Countdown and Carrie. They are way more than that. I love their whole catalog including everything they have done since reuniting in the early 2000's with Start From The Dark album. My favorites have always been the self titled debut album and Wings Of Tomorrow. John Norum is my favorite Europe guitar player, but Kee Marcello is amazing as well
Fantastic documentary! Keep it up!
Man your docu is top notch..subs on..please keep up the enthusiasm..Europe rules from the first album all the way.😎
I still contend that they have one of the earliest power metal songs, and should be remembered as one of the most classic metal bands.
I still love hearing those rough demos from underground nobody bands. Early Europe sounds more like heavy metal for sure.
Brilliant videos mate!
Very interesting, great Channel,I love Background Information on my favorite Bands😊👍⭐
great video. thanks a lot
....I'd always hoped & wanted Europe to be back with botha guitarists together.🎸🎸..
🎼🗣️🎤🎸🎶😍👍...
Agreed
People always talk about and get excited for The Final Countdown but the rest of the album is infinitely better.
The Final Countdown and Out of This World are still relevant and in my possession today! 🤘

That acoustic performance by Joey was great.

Cool rundown. I always thought this band was much better than most people gave them credit for.
It´s really a shame that the majority of people only know The Final Countdown.... They´re a great band with lots of good songs...
Wings of Tomorrow was one of the first CDs I ever owned... Got it from a guy who thought it was too hard music :D
I was 7 when I first heard The Final Coundtown. Back in communist Poland I would never be able to see them live. 😔 35 later Europe has still special place in my heart. They definitely wrote the soundtrack to my taste in music😉. Living in US for the past 20 years I've attended many rock concerts and I am so grateful for that. I had VIP tickets for Europe last summer.. tour never ended up happening because of Covid..😔.. I was really hoping to meet them in person..
John Norum is still in my top 5 favorite guitarists!
"Danger On The Track" is my fave
Hot Rod
Definitely one of my favorite bands growing up.
Always had a huge man crush on John Norum lol His sister Tone is pretty good too. I really like the B-side of Final Countdown, thanks to Norum's playing. In that sense Total Control is a spiritual successor to Final Countdown, but less keys more bluesy licks.
Had no idea about Europe’s earlier material. 😎🤘
