  • Auto repair is more complicated than ever. Don’t trust a Chilton or Haynes manual to get the service information you need for modern cars.
In this episode, Steve breaks down all of the service information options available for DIY or hobby mechanics and gives his opinion on all of them.

He's right. I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma, and the Haynes and Chilton's manuals don't tell me a lot of the information I need to know, although they do tell me "some."

hayes etc those books are a scam they used to be good i mean everything you could want. now they just remove a ton and have absolutly nothing not even your vehicle like maybe 10 pages not worth it now

I'm Doing My girls 2002 Tacoma Head Gaskets with the Haynes Book and it has you jumping all over the book, so annoying and so many Models on it, easy to get confused, I need to try this Alldata.

Great advice OEM is always my go to unfortunately I don't like that they are monopolizing the market especially for programing. Great advice as usual and great video!!

Thanks CP. I agree that they could be better, but thankfully they aren’t like John Deere. I’m sure you see this a lot, farmers can hardly keep their equipment functioning anymore.

When I was at the dealership I’d look things up on all data over the GM stuff just because it was easier to find. If it was electrical I’d use the GM stuff.

Thanks! Update: charm.li is a free library with .pdf manuals on any car at least 10 years old. Great resource, not a sponsor.

I think there are always back yard mechanics that make do like me. I am just trying to keep my older stuff going. Van and trucks are from 2003-2006 gas and diesel

Very true, Brent. Without people like you, we wouldn’t see many older cars on the road.

The powers that be don't want us to be able to repair our own vehicles. It's no surprise that they're putting roadblocks in the way of getting pertinent repair information.

so i got a 2012 hyundai accent just need to fix the rear hatch door the latch is broken and need to pull metal rod by hand to get the door open from the inside. all data website just gave me a part number didn't give image of the part, and didn't say how to do the repair. so it didn't help me a whole lot other than give part number but without seeing it i don't know if it's right part.
so i did google search i found parts that looks like the parts i need sold off of ebay. i don't shop on ebay. but i guess if i buy the parts for this repair it's kind of self explanatory there is screw holes and i likely will need to screw them off and on. i don't know the sizes of the tools i would need and it would be frustrating trying to do whack a mole to guess the size when i don't own many tools. would add alot of challenge in buying tools.
my car also neeeds catalytic converter i had no idea how to read what alldata was telling me. i am not a mechanic, so maybe real mechanic might know. but i was hoping the website would me a nonmechanic do these repairs. am i doing something wrong or what?

I understand what you’re saying, and that is frustrating. All Data gets its information directly from Hyundai, which is written for their technicians at dealerships. You’re not doing anything wrong, Hyundai information has always been this bad until just recently.

Vehicles are getting more like computers than transportation, which is the main reason people buy them ! When mechanics have to refer to service information, technology is getting way out of hand ! Loved it back in the days when you could fix your own vehicle in your backyard ! Technology isn't always better for people !!!

Anybody who's ever had a computer has probably replaced it. They go bad! Trusting your life to a computer is, to me, just assinine.
