BMW SOS FIX No Audio Error Fix CHEAP
BMW’s are great vehicles, I absolutely love them. I’ve owned several models, all the way back to my first BMW, my beloved, estoril blue E36 M3:
estoril Blue m3
I currently drive a 2006 BMW 650i, and the car has treated me great over the years (though she is getting old now). With all cars, you need to keep up on the maintenance, and from time to time parts fail. I try and do all of the repairs and maintenance myself. However, every once in a while a problem arises requiring research on the various BMW forums to figure out a better solution than bringing it to the stealership. The BMW SOS fix just so happens to be exactly one of those problems. It is also worth mentioning that Audi, VW, and Porsche are susceptible to the very same issues.
In this case we have already done the research for you. We even took the time to make a RUclips video illustrating the problem and solution (skip to the bottom). However, If you want to know more about the problem and solution, keep reading!
The problem:
BMWs utilize a fiber optic network called the MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) network. It’s based on fiber-optic technology. Although it is a very fast and efficient networking technology, it’s susceptible to breakdown if any one component in the chain goes bad. Think of it like a string of Christmas lights, if one light goes bad, the entire sting does not function. In our case if one component in the most network goes bad, the SOS light illuminates on your dashboard, and audio output will to cease to function from any device on the same network. Boom, no Sound.
Here is a picture to help illustrate how a BMW network is typically arranged:
BMW SOS fix
The Solution:
Lucky for us it is almost always the same component that fails in the BMW MOST loop, the satellite receiver. It is always the same part used to bypass a defective component: A fiber-optic MOST bypass adapter.
However, there is another problem! The typical fiber-optic MOST bypass typically found on the Internet cannot be used without user modification. Consequently, these units need to be carefully trimmed by the consumer after receiving them to make it compatible with the BMW male MOST adapter disconnected from the satellite radio receiver. Thankfully, they are now available pre-trimmed on Amazon so you can literally install it in seconds right out-of-the-box. Here is the link to the pre-trimmed part if you want to get right to the BMW SOS fix!
In our experience 90% of the time it winds up being a defective satellite receiver in older BMW’s. In other words, If you are not into listening to Satellite Radio, there’s no need to buy a new, expensive (around $1000 from the dealer) satellite receiver. Once we bypass the defective receiver with the adapter it will be grayed out in your menu as an audio input selection, and everything else will be back to normal!
This BMW SOS error light fix is a simple task (read the RUclips comments to review the success stories), the video below shows the install in detail.
Check out the RUclips video below and please don’t forget to subscribe on social media if you enjoyed our content. Please feel free to ask questions below (or in the RUclips comments). I try my BEST to respond and help out my readers and viewers! Many, many more DI
Ok, I had the exact same issue and by far this is the best explained video. Only minor comment, meaning if you want to still have your trunk intact looking nice is that you have to unscrew the trunk covers, which took me exactly 25 minutes. So thanks and you saved me tons of cash at the 'Stealership' whereas they told me I need a new radio (that I first bought with labor and all installed for USD 560), and which after 2 days stopped working. Based on my own due diligence, it's definitely the satellite radio (SOS) which caused by breaking the SOS loop (that's a BMW service you can pay for in the USA and Europe when having BMA only car issues). Unfortunately this entire system is connected with sound (BMW chimes, car stereo, etc) through that stupid insane Satellite. Hope this helps! Thanks again
I have a 2017 BMW I8 with this exact issue and the dealership acts like they have no clue about what's going on. As a result, I'm definitely going to give this a try. Thanks for taking the time out to make this video.
Let us know how it works out!
The solution for me (for BMW M4 2015) was: I took the panel off located located underneath the drivers dash & steering wheel (above the brake & accelerator pedals). There was a loose plug (small flat white plug) which pops into a small white long plastic box, and I made sure the smaller wire (with tiny red plug) was plugged into what looks like a small speaker. The SOS Fault warning code disappeared right away and hasn't come back. Just in case it helps any other viewers.
panel with screws ?
@@mo_nstroYup. It’ll be the panel under the drivers seat, think of it as a glovebox, just on the drivers side. But if you have an E90, it’ll be T15 or a T20 screw tip, 3 screws
THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!
I WENT TO 2 DIFFERENT BMW DEALERSHIP AND BOTH CAME UP WITH CRAZY THINGS REGARDING THE PROBLEM. THEY START OFF BY TELLING ME I NEED TO HAVE MY DASH REMOVED AND HAVE MY INDASH REMOVED! COMPLETELY MONEY PIT WAITING TO HAPPEN IF YOUR NOT WISE ENOUGH TO DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK AND GRAB TGE AWESOME ADVICE FROM MY MAN ABOVE. SAVE ME THOUSANDS!!! HIGHLY APPRECIATED MY MAN THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO WITH THE ACCURATE INFORMATION.
Hey boss just wanted to post ah good comment on your video!! After all forums i seen non where clear to fix my SOS malfunction no audio problem!! Till i seen your video!! Now i got my stereo back!! Hope i can keeep going to your youtube page for other cheap fixes!! YOU ROCK!!! 🤘😎🤘
Thanks for the positive feedback! I'm glad it worked out for you!
Thanks so much for this AMAZING fix and links. Problem solved and super straightforward. Thanks for this public service!
Love the watch on you wrist.... no matter where I see it that jubilee bracelet always stands out. 😀 Thank you for the video. Ordered my part and waiting for it to arrive....
It worked for my 08 528. The placement was on the left side not the bottom but the loop worked like a charm. Thanks, I will subscribe to your channel.
Thanks for reporting back with the positive results!
Saved my life man I don’t know why nobody talks about this it’s such a common problem. Almost ordered a whole new module but I already had a optic cable laying around and didn’t know I had to trim it. Worked like a charm after.
Nice, I'm glad to head you got it up and running! Feels great to fix it for so cheap! Yeah, those stock adapters need to be trimmed and its a bit of a pain in the ass... so now the link in the description is for-pre-trimmed units so you can start using them without any trimming/modding :) I've head of a few people actually breaking them (and having to order a 2nd unit) when trying to do the trimming!
Thanks so much for the Help. This has been the best Video by Far. I watched SO many other Videos on how to Fix this Stupid thing, but this Video Worked Perfectly For my 2008 BMW X5 4.8I. I got the female Adapater from amazon And once i just plugged it in, the Aux Started Working Again, and the SOS light disappeared. Thank you again.
Much Love
I just picked up a 2007 X5 4.8i and it won’t select the Aux (and can be unreliable in selecting other things). Where did you plug in the female adapter?
Thank you so much for the video. I bought the part from your link. It took me 5min to plug it in and it worked!!
It fixed my aux not having audio.
2008 535i. Subscribed to your channel.
Thank YOU for taking the time to come back and leave the positive feedback! I'm glad it worked out for you :) We always try to help either way!
naxen happens to my car exact year and model hopefully it’ll work
Where was the cable located? Same spot as the one in the video?
So your cable was in the same place in your 2008 BMW 535i but I don’t have satellite radio on my display
My aux is playing out of right side only
Thanks so much mate! Fixed in under 20 mins what a fantastic video - much appreciated!
Thank you for the video on this. Purchased the connector and all is well again.
Glad to hear it! Thank you for posting the positive feedback :-)
Worked on my ‘07 550i, thank you for this! I also found that using a can opener helps for stripping the housing
Was the satellite radio unit in the same place on the left hand side in the trunk in a 5 series, just wondering cuz I have a E60 too
@@antboerner861 haven’t had that car in a year but yeah lmao, super easy job
Just did it an hour ago. Worked like a charm! Appreciate you! 🙏🏾👌🏾
Thank you for taking the time to leave positive feedback! Please subscribe :)
Thank you for this video just took my 2006 M6 to the dealership told me I needed a new satellite module $1300 they didn’t bother to tell me that this was available already ordered it from Amazon male and female option for $16 thanks
There is absolutely no use for the male version when it comes to bypassing. The best option is to get the pre trimmed female version because can bypass any component
Appreciate the help. Bought 2 modules neither worked. Grabbed an adapter worked instantly. Good looking
Pls what kind of adaptor
What adapter
I have to admit it, I was a bit skeptical about this video. Bought my 08 650i 70,000 miles and clean title from a used car dealership that is well respected spring 2024. First week, issues with audio in car ???? Called dealership & talked to an audio specialist. Ok I'll speed it up after bringing the car back to dealership and they say they replaced blue tooth module. Got car back & same b/s. So thank God for tutorials like this. I rolled the dice ordered the bypass loop in the link below the video and Shazam. Amazon dropped it off 5 minutes later stereo working. I hope there's a BMW engineer watching this video and feeling guilty because they should ! Thank you so much for this very helpful 411
Definitely worked! Thanks!!
Worked for 2007 X5 (E70). Had SOS error and only the CD player would work. Bypassed Sat box and all is good now. No Satellite radio now, but I was not using that anyway. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for reporting back with the good news! All it takes is one bad component to bring down the whole MOST network. Glad to hear everything worked out for you!
Broo thanks for the confirmation only my cd player worked but with no sound im pretty excited to get my music back finally
i have that problem with my 08 x5 i kinda need help . its because of some new halos i put in now my aux dosent work
It worked for my bmw 550 2007.
Thanks for this video
Thanks so much for the positive comment! For anyone else don't forget we have the links for the new pre-trimmed adapters (plug and play) in the description !
Great vid . Worked like champ. Hardest part was getting plug out of the module. I used my Dremel with a cutting disc to shave off the surrounding plastic lip.
Yoooo me to but I jus broke mine by accident 🙄🙄
The loop in the description is a custom connector that you don't need to cut up with a Dremal and risk breaking, you just plug it in and go
@@nojobtommy4556 The loop in the description is a custom connector that you don't need to cut up with a Dremal and risk breaking, you just plug it in and go
Very helpful and right to the point video! Thanks for the tips! I’ll be ordering one of those cables to address the interesting problem on our 2008 E91 with the basic audio system.
The SOS fail is accompanied by a static “ticking” sound. All audio alerts/chimes/music work, it’s just static has been introduced. I pulled the connector off the TCU and noticed the static beats like a metronome to the fiber optic pulses. Any additional insight anyone may have would be appreciated. We swapped amps thinking that could be the culprit, but no joy.
Did you ever manage to fix this?
Hey did you ever find the fix I am having the same issue with my e90
Bear in mind that this isn't the be all, end all SOS fix. I just picked up a 2010 650i for short $$ that had a several electrical issues going on. Since the radio works, but the bluetooth won't connect, the TCU unit was a fault. You want to make sure, and pin these components out separately, before diving in.
Perfect 📹
To the point and I was worried bout that sos error I just use my aux for now on... Do u have any more videos 650i
This worked like a charm! Thank you!!!
I've ordered the part and will try this out.
My question is, do you have a DIY on how you wired your Valentine One? I also have a 650i and want to install my V1 exactly where yours is. Thanks in advance.
Interesting video. I just had that come on my 2011 335i, except I still have sound. Could it also relate to an individual speaker? I have noticed driverside door speaker isn't working right. ( The larger speaker.)
Thanks for your help, worked on my 2008 BMW 750 I.
Thank you for reporting back with the positive feedback! For anyone reading this the loop in the description of this video comes with full phone support right here in the US to walk you through it even if it is more complex than a simple bypass
Just fixed mine good as new 🙌🏽
Thank you, your video was very help full.
Thank you so much! Life saver! Just fixed my radio!
Thank you this work great for my bmw 528i
Wish I would’ve fixed my car months ago. Finally just fixed it
just did it and worked like a charm. 2007 335 e93 . the SAT radio is a little hard to reach
Worked great for 2008 535xi wagon. Thx
Thank you so much, work good on 2007 BMW X5
Man ole man what a damn money saver. Thanks
Worked! Thank you thank you

I own an e60 530i and had a week ago sos system failure and aftar a day it was no audio in at all in car then after next day audio came back but sos failure stayed but i noticed something when there is no audio also u cannot access tv the sos failure still appear so what it could be from?
@@eliasafram6179 Cant hurt to try the Fiber bypass for only $10.. You can also troubleshoot other components if its not the satellite radio unit.
I own e60 525i I have problem w sos keep coming out and no audio and after a 10 20 min the screen turn off..I don’t know if something wrong w computer or only I need the peace u put it
Thank you
ModsAndProjects hey...so my Sos Malfunctioned but would this also be able to fix my AUX port and the USB port next to it? I have an 08 328xi. My speakers are also making a static like noise even when the car is completely off.
Great video. Thanks for posting. I have an 08 e60. My bluetooth reads my phone and syncs but no sound comes thru during a call (as if they're not even synced. Also, I have no aux anymore for some reason. I noticed these two issues right after the SOS light came on. New mulf2 needed I assume?
This worked for my BMW 550 2008. Thank$
Thanks so much for the positive feedback, We love to hear success stories :)
Chad i have 08 550i as well, same issue , no connection, no sound, sos issue, intermittent starter issue(separate issue), but where is our satelite module located?
Thank you so much bro!! 🙌
I m guessing you got it working?
Funktioniert so einwandfrei. Thanks
Hi wanted to thank you for great information, you saved me alots of $$$$$$$ .. I have a 2008 750 LI, the SOS module is inside the trunks left side ceiling,I did order the by pass cable of your you tube link as well.. thanks again
I have the same model. I just ordered the part so I know it will work. Thanks
My e90 shows blinking light under the steering as well. But the CCC unit still loops in the bmw logo. What can be the issue?
I have a 2011 BMW X5M with SOS call malfunction on my screen. I can still use my knob and select things. Navigation works but I get no audio throughout the truck not even when the key fob is In. Bluetooth says “loading” any suggestions?
Hi. What’s the best way to remove the pins holding the trunk lining in order to get to the Sat radio?
I have a 2008 e64 with the same problem by in the same time my bluetooth doesn't work is it also typical for the problem with the radio? I also have a different radio its a DAB tuner but I think it doesn't make much different?
Thank you, thank you, thank you............My local auto mechanics quoted a price of 2600. to replace something which would have not remedied the problem. Throwing money away. NOT!!!! All I can say is thank you, thank you and thank you again.
I had the problem on my X1 F48 2017 model. Assume it’s software have bugs.
Tested to call SOS after shows SOS system failure message, get through perfectly, which proves the system NOT failure. Used voice control coincidentally last week, the fault message disappeared dramatically, and didn’t back till today.
I rarely use voice control before, have tried to disconnect blue tooth device and reconnect from other youtube video, didn’t work well.
Can’t say it’s the solution, but cost nothing and worth a try.
hello, thanks for commenting :-) the bypass loop is a great tool because it allows you to identify exactly which component is malfunctioning. The particular loop in the description of the video above comes with direct customer support to assist you with identifying the exact problem and helping you to decide whether just bypassing it or regaining the functionality is the best course of action. A lot of times people just bypass out something like the satellite radio to get rid of the SOS light or to get there sound back, however, if it is something like Bluetooth that you might want to get the actual functionality back the tech support will guide you to the best course of action in getting it addressed avoiding the crazy prices the dealership would charge. For $14 it’s pretty awesome that you get that level of technical support!
Do you have suggestions on where to buy a new sat radio for an ‘08 535i?
hello, I have the same problem on my BMW E60 530 from 2004, this solution also gives ?? is the order fast to arrive? Thank you for your opinion 🙏
08 E92 I have audio for Radio and CD player but have lost Bluetooth/Aux. SOS malfunction light appears. "heartbeat" faintly in my speakers. Tried this troubleshoot, did not help. Any suggestions?
I’m going to order part for my 2008 X5. Thank you!
Good luck, if you have any problems just coming back here and I will guide you to a solution
Did it end up working? If so which module was it?
I tried it on mine never worked do you have any idea what to do ?
Worked out great, 08 550i. Quick question,do i need to unplug the satellite module? would it cause any issue with the battery?
No, no need to disconnect the power to the satellite receiver. Thanks for reporting back with your positive results.
Does anyone know a store I could buy this in instead of ordering it online? I can not stand going without radio and I’d like to get the part asap.
i have a 2009 328i and i have the sos light come on the dash with popping sounds. stayed like that for a couple days and then my base for my radio went completely out. do you know if it’ll come back once i bypass the satellite module?
I have the same problem whit my 535d lci Uk version and I can’t find information where is that MOST module located to bypass it like on the video 🤷♂️
I have bought the fiberoptic bypass cable and still have sos malfunction light on. What I’m I doing wrong ? E92 satellite radio in the truck
Question my AUX and SAT is already grey out and my phone isn't working so did that help on your car
i have a 2007 bmw 550i, have had this vehicle since Sept 2009. Currently approx 170k miles. I recently spent several thousand dollars to replace the coolant system and other issues. When I took the 550i in, I told BMW dealership something was draining the battery and coolant light continued to come on, with coolant leaking. Their fix was replacing the coolant system, I can provide a copy of exactly what they did, and replacing a Negative Battery Cable for cable cost being $371.69. I am trying to figure out if what has been done already, may have had something to do with SOS issue I have right now. Before the SOS light came on, a few hours before that happened, I was outside and noticed my front left headlamp was on... it was the only thing on, not both headlamps, only the left one. I cranked the car, just to make sure it would start, which it did. A few hours later i was ready to leave work and started my car. That's when the SOS light came on... The car started but absolutely no audio and no i-Drive... I drove it home, parked in the garage. It was late and I didn't have time to deal with it then. I didn't know what it meant, knew it wasn't good but had already worked 13 hrs that day and was done! The next day was just hours away! I have another vehicle, so was able to drive the other vehicle the next day. However, the following day I attempted to start the 550i, but to no avail, the battery was completely dead. Something is still draining the battery. I am thinking what the dealership did, was NOT fix the problem with something draining my battery. I don't listen to satelite radio, do not have a subscription. When i took it in to fix the coolant system and whatever was draining the battery,, I told them the CD Exchanger in the glove box sounded like it was still running when i turned the car off. The battery is fairly new, i can check to see when it was replaced and provided an exact date. Bottom line is, the battery is completely dead, the audio and i-Drive quit working when the SOS light came on but it would still start then and ran good on my way home, that evening.. Now I cannot start it but need to know what you think and what my options are... Thoroughly enjoyed your video. However, I'm thinking the literal thousands I spent within the last month, may be related to my current issue. Your thoughts and help is greatly appreciated. I am not sure how this works, I have never subscribed before.. Plz make a believer out of me! Best regards, JAJ
Wow thank you sooo much
Hi, I am in Australia with the dreaded SOS malfunction fault. After watching your excellent video, I now am hoping this might fix my problems. I have no water damage unless it is around the shark fin, but no signs of ingress. Apart from the SOS failure, which if I can clear with the loop cable would be great, I have no reversing camera and it defaults to a map screen, no bluetooth for my phone to connect, and no TV which I don't use anyway, (is this your sat radio? 4th option on right). I have been looking for the SOS battery and can't find it or info on location/ part number. Does this model have a battery? Do you think the loop cable might be a fix? I found a SIM card in the TCU and as 3G is phasing out here could this be the problem? My car is a 2008 X5e70 3.0sd with the CCC system, built in USA I believe.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 2006 BMW 760li an the red lights come on in my truck to the modules but the radio won't play any music the sos system come one.an when I try to play the fm threw the I home the stations won't come up it would let me press the am/fm but won't let me select a station
1 Year! That's how long I went without a radio -- using my phone and Bluetooth to listen to music! Man! So happy this worked. I plugged it into my amp first because I was told it was bad and would cost $800 - $1,600! That didn't work. Plugged it into my Nav and it immediately worked! I don't have a CD in my Nav, but I didn't use it much anyway. Me and my '04 745Li thank you immensely!
Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad it worked out for you!
Did the radio turn on before ?
I have a 750i I know they all work for all of them but I my question is how many by passes do I need in total Cus I connected mines to the Bluetooth module didn’t work then went on to the next one witch was the Navi system basically all them but only had one so I would have to take it off after checking if any one those was the issue
My bmw 328i 2007 3series has the same problem..
I bought the fiber optic but it won’t bring out any sound but the display
The link wire goes to the satellite radio so how does that work if mine is disconnected will I still be able to use my aux e93
If i had my amplifier removed do you know if this will still work? I have a bmw e92 m3
You are the best Sir
Thanks for the positive feedback? I guess you got it working?
I have the sos and no sound or display on idrive. This obviously won't fix the display but will this make the aux work?
Could you delete the satellite unit entirely? And just replace the adapter in the correct place?
Hopefully this works for my 2007 BMW M6
Thank you it worked in mine!
Thanks for reporting back with your results!
So I dont hear my chime when i put key in ,and my election menu works until it goes to FM or am radio mode ,then no sound comes out,is thus the same fix?.i am currently touching battery cables now and trying that to maybe reset stuff lmk what you think t.c tjanks
Hay what are the symtons of sos my I drive system not working sunroof electric seats heared seats ?
So what would be the difference if I cut bot wires from pigtail ans straight loop without the by pass ....
It is such a shame that this "well-oiled" machine has the absolute dumbest items breakdown on the car. What bothers me the most is how it disables your other features or the errors take over your display screens. I have never, ever, ever touched this SOS button feature and now I have no radio, can't make any calls, and I can't bypass the error message. I purchased my car in 2010 and you won't believe the number of stupid errors I get from this vehicle.
Oh ... Thanks for instructions on how to fix it!
Sorry for the rant!!
Does this apply if my i drive screen is completely black won’t turn on and I have sos light / no audio?? 08 535xi had this car for 3 years and today out of the blue my i drive and audio disappeared.
Can someone suggest what optical to use since my 550i 2006 is a little fatter and bigger than whats online.
So I got a 2006 330xi. I try to do the same thing but my radio is not coming on now mind you when I go into the trunk somebody remove my satellite module do I need that to bypass it?
I have a sks code and my navi screen went red and then off and will not come on no audio also car will not start without putting the key fob in the ignition ?
I get that same SOS error, but I have sound from the radio. Does that mean it is not the satellite receiver causing the error?
My radio works in a 2010 650i, but SOS light. A used Sirius unit is $89 on eBay motors?
you cured the symptoms but not the illness.
That is a matter of perspective.. if you bypass something you don't care about like the satellite receiver for example I would call that a cure.
I bought the regular jumper from Amazon and it plugs perfect to my car, no sound though but the screen came back, I checked all fuses involved and they work, my next thing might be that the amp isn't working.
I have an 05 645ci I do not have the satellite radio in my car can you please help me getting my radio to work and thank you
Good shit. Works on the E7X vehicles.
Glad to hear it worked out for you!
Having a similar issue with a 2003 X5 3.0 radio on shows what's playing but no sound ..bought it with this condition .any help would be appreciated.including repair mans contact to send amp if that's the issue .thanks
Did you figure it out? Sounds like it could be the amp.
Would this work on a 328i coupe it has the everything in the back
Do you have to reset your battery?I tried with the jumper and still no sound.
I have 2018 F80 M3 since new and that SOS malfunction came yesterday. I couldn’t agree more about stealers they are absolutely thieves.
I’ve got 4 series grand coupe 2016 got sos issue and audio on phone isssue when I speak nobody can hear me but I can hear them any help be amazing
Radio chimes and cd came back but still not able to connect to Bluetooth or usb. Does this mean a faulty Combox
My FM radio works, AM will display but only plays static. Phone no longer connects via bluetooth. DVD says not DVD but there is one in the DVD player. Satelite does not work and is grey out. Which component do you think is bad?
it is a 2009 bmw 650i convertible
im having the same problem but my radio isnt coming on at all i dont have the setup u have i changed radios with the same # still no powers going thru it
Thanks for doing this video, I was headed to BMW! One question, I drive the 750i, 2006 and I'm getting the same SOS signal but my radio still works, should I still get the same female plug?
Yes, if you get the one in the description It comes with support to help you figure out what the issue is even if you can't quickly figure it out with the loop.
When i open up entertainment it show my sat is already grayed out. I have yet to go in and bypass....what does that mean
Not sure if you’re still answering comments as this video is a few years old, but I ordered the fiber optic loop, installed it, but I still have satellite radio but no aux input. I only use aux input from my phone so I’m kinda sitting down the stream with no paddle.
If you ordered it from the link in the description of the video it offers full support on troubleshooting the vehicle. Sometimes it is more involved than just bypassing a component to figure out exactly what is going on.
I have a 2006 BMW 330i E90 without sat radio but have the logic 7 system with nav my system keep rebooting.
If the nav keeps rebooting in a 2006 you have a bad CCC. You cannot bypass the CCC it needs to be repaired or replaced. Also, you can't just drop in a used eBay CCC, it will need to be coded to your vehicle. BMW charges 1200-1600 you can get it repaired for around 400.
