Gunner turret, could be better yes, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened in real life. Look at the M10 tank, Dicker max, Achilles, Archer, etc. These are nations that produce some of the best tanks, and somehow these shitty designs still went through. They are there for a reason.
The clones weren’t fit for what the empire needed. Clones were expensive and took a very long time to produce, what the empire needed was a police force. The stormtroopers did not provide that, but the imperial army troopers did. Lower quality, but they weren’t dealing with massive amounts of battle droids, they were dealing with untrained resistance groups.
Technically I'm pretty sure they weren't expecting Skilled Troopers to seize the tank for themselves Also the inside is very safe as a system in the walker I forget the specifics but basically the cloned inside the main body would have survived both falls you see
Well I mean, it is the universe where they thought to give the tanks legs and have them move slower than the pace of a brisk walk, and base all their weapons on something that a single guy with a glowy stick can deflect back at their faces, so I feel like it's kinda expected at this point

I feel like the older seasons of the clone wars made the AT-TEs so much slower than they actually look cause the last clone wars and bad batch made them look so much more faster and literal beasts instead of slow machines that look like they got some old ass knee joints or something...idk the AT-TE walking animation kinda inconsistent if you ask me, but one of my favourite walkers of all time, can never get enough of this mighty machine.

I like the AT-TE way more than the AT-AT because we see it used in way more awesome ways. You never see AT-ATs climbing up cliffs or latching on to the exterior of ships.
And with a few upgrades (an enclosed or remote operated turret and up-armoured or shielded cockpit and underside) I think the AT-TE could far surpass the AT-AT in utility and just plainly be better in most departments.

Furthermore, the (comparatively) lower profile of the AT-TE means it's far less likely to be hit from longer range compared to its imperial successor. Most Clone Wars era stuff in general is just vastly better designed than the Empire's "advancements". The only objective improvement the Empire makes is with its capital ships. Everything else is just expensive trash.
Problem is that at-te and at-at are not actually tanks. They are slow and one of tanks' main tactical goal is fast breakthrough and to put the cow to mind the corn in enemy communications bases, supply lines - fast n furious mobile artillery. Te and at are walkers that transport elite troopers. Also both have huge guns that overwhelming everything in a shot range. They were better than Cisc and rebel vehicles. But both are often ridiculously slow. But te and at are not tanks. Both are mobile heavy artillery that transport elite troopers. Problem is that military command (and fiction authors) often use them as tanks but they are heavy artillery and transport vehiles. Great regards to writers who gave the Republic an the Empire their own hovertanks and juggernauts

phase 2 armor is used mostly by infantry because the armor is lighter and has inbuilt life-support which isn't necessary for a vehicle operator

Without all of its glaring downsides, the AT-TE is a beast of a walker. I would honestly put my money on it over the AT-AT in 90% of ground battles.
