    I think one struggle of being an old player is having old knowledge. Rolling used to be "bad" so most people didn't do it. Its kinda funny that in this session Mang0 basically taught Scar how to roll.

    • @IamFearLezz
      @IamFearLezz 3 года назад +20

      Yeah, I think it's quite natural since rolling is one of the first bad habits you learn to break when playing the game at any level above casual. As a result, the negative connotations with rolling get reinforced, especially when a character has good options out of shield. Mango has consistently praised S2J's rolls over the years so it makes a lot of sense that it gets brought up in the context of coaching a Falcon.

    • @davidolinger3948
      @davidolinger3948 3 года назад +7

      Yeah, when I first got into smash all I heard was bad players roll in, then watched top players and mango loves his roll ins, and in smash 4 one of all Leo’s fav techniques was the double roll in which sounds dumb but worked really well lol

    • @deputydanger2711
      @deputydanger2711 3 года назад +4

      Yeah, a lot of people don't realize rolling is only bad when you do it too often. Which is something new players do all the time. You need to treat rolling like any other defensive mix-up. If you spam it, any decent player will catch on and punish you for it.

      @ADavidJohnson 3 года назад +3

      @@pongkong I don’t think we’re disagreeing except that I don’t think IQ is really a useful concept in the first place. Mang0 is one of the five best people ever to play Melee; he’s really damn good at some other video games. He’s really bad at a lot of stuff
      A lot of people could say that about something, minus being one the handful of best at a particular competition
      I’m saying that mang0 being so good at Melee doesn’t necessarily translate into other things, including, to some degree, explaining in words every aspect of to people not like him. But Michael Jordan hasn’t been a great NBA owner and likely wouldn’t ever have made a good coach. Some of these skills are related but require different things than just being really good at and knowing a ton about the game.

      @pongkong 3 года назад +1

      @@ADavidJohnson Well fair enough. I dont know a lot about basketball, I think the game sucks, but I watched that Kobe eulogy with Michael Jordan. Kobe seemed to find a lot of value in probing Jordan about mentality and playing the game. Mango explaining to scar the problem with his mentality during that podcast a few years back seemed spot on and you could see it on scars face.
      And the iq thing... look i get that its a loaded political thing for some people, i understand the traditional test is lacking. Im just saying winning games on screen or the game of life, is an intelligence test. When I lose starcraft, go or melee, i feel clowned like an idiot by my opponnent, every single time. falcon's approaching bair wont beat out much, and will usually trade. Retreating bairs are good tho. Thats why using bair in neutral is bad. Neutral is seeing what your opponent is doing and countering it. If they are dash dancing, you dash attack. If they are crouching then you stomp. If they shield, cross up shield or drift back. You aren't throwing out moves just throw out moves they need to have a purpose.

    can someone clarify what the term flowchart means for me please? For the longest time i thought flowchart was playing more off of gut feeling and trying to mix up your opponent. • @jbb4105
      @jbb4105 3 года назад +5

      when they refer to flowchat they're talking about the "bread and butter" like you said. pretty much like whatever combos, techs, movement, etc. you know is guaranteed to work (considering both your and your opponent's characters)
      i hope that makes sense lol at least thats how i always understood it

    • @yondaimesin
      @yondaimesin 3 года назад +6

      a flowchart generally, is what you do for any given situation, people usually talk about it in a gutfeeling sort of way since its so INGRAINED in you its BECOME a gut feeling, or its so simple that you can basically think on the fly. its so standard that you just do it in general. thats what a flow chart is, basically what you do every match verses a certain situation. if i played mroe melee id give you a better example than this, but say you are going to get up, you have multiple options to get up, but on the flowchart, theres a BEST option and a WORST option. you can shield, or you can shine into a combo, you can actively choose those options. people hate fox most of the time because his flowchart allows for counterplay at almost any givent situation.

    • @polariseh45
      @polariseh45 3 года назад +6

      Its essentially a sequence of options you use to respond to your opponents choices. If you're edgegaurding fox for instance, if hes above ledge and hes trying to recover to a platform, you have a response to hit him to get him below ledge. Then when hes below edge, you have another option ready to prevent him from returning to stage. Its a set of sequences that flow one into another that have particular options to respond to them. Thats what I understand of it anyway.

    • @popasquat5022
      @popasquat5022 3 года назад +6

      flowcharting is actually the opposite of playing off of gut feeling, it describes having pre-determined options for most if not all outcomes of a situation so that punishes are reliable and hit hard. A good example would be watching zain/m2k edgeguards. They get their grab at ledge, forward throw into dtilt. If the spacie up Bs from below ledge, they already know to counter and go out to fair or up B them afterwards. If the spacie double jump side Bs, they already know to jab twice to cover shortened and unshortened, etc. There can be mixups in flowcharting, but its a mixups that's been theorized and labbed beforehand, and not made up on the fly.

    • @yondaimesin
      @yondaimesin 3 года назад +2

      @@popasquat5022 but couldnt you argue that a flowchart being extremely simple (Flowchart Ken) or even memorized(your example) would make it a muscle memory flowchart, basically doing things from reaction based on positional placement? using gut feeling probably was an incorrect choice of words.

    Lmao Mang0 was being nice and playing brain dead so Scar could get some practice, and when Scar asked for one more Mang0 turned on the Jets and did a speed run.

    I think scar thinks he can CC shine... I think I heard him say "I cc'd that" on a shine.
    Also when hes recovering his spacing is also going in. He doesnt do drift aways when people approach him
