I'm so happy you're giving shaman king a spotlight. When I was a kid, growning up in a small country-town in Ireland, I felt like a sheep in wolf's clothing. I was different to most people around me but adapted to acting like everyone around me so I wouldn't get burned by peers or be a disappointment to my parents. But then I came across shaman king on TV, and I was just floored. I instantly resonated with Yohs character on levels that I didn't even know I could at that age. His passivity, empathy and willingness to forgive people who hurt him just to leave the world a little bit more cleansed and positive than it was before made me feel like I was understood for the first time, and that gave me the confidence to believe for the first time that if one person can be like me, then surely more can too, and they must be out there. And that I wasn't alone anymore. I really became myself after that, and first spark or confidence became a core tennant of who I still am. Most other anime or manga, I like because they're fun or interesting and it doesn't normally go much further than that. But I love shaman king because it was the first time anyone or anything ever reached out to me and told me that "I'm here too".
I don't think I've ever related to a comment more. Honestly i love how a story like Yoh's can resonate so deeply that it causes such a profound impact on a life. You're great Ian, and I'm glad you're here.
Thanks for saying all this. I grew up in a boring environment with a lack of proper role models. Yoh was the source of wisdom and integrity i looked up to.
Oh I relate to this comment so much... As another not-so-small-town Irish person who really struggled with peer groups and making friends, Yoh was a role model I didn't know I needed until I had him. He shaped my worldview in a way I didn't even realise until I re-discovered the manga volumes I had and started re-reading them. Much like how SeaGee feels, Yoh is the kind of person I wanted to be and want to continue being. It's very heartening knowing there are more like me out there even in our small country Ian :)
Yoh was the most relaxed laid back MC who didn’t care about riches and power. I legit have been living my life like this. And I’m happy when things are just peaceful
I saw this Anime when i was 7-8 years old. And even then i didnt like conventional heroes. And suddenly there is Yoh. Who is bassicall a lonely hippie who likes to chill and not do much. But when it comes to those he cares about he does his best and trys to help people even at their worse. This was a big influence in my life. So thank you Shaman King. you kinda helped me make my self a somewhat decent person because you showed me a charachter i admired when i was a kid.
I spend all my childhood, middle shool and high shcool asking people who read manga if they like Shaman king, and I never found anyone Believe it or not, but I barely (and even a little) cried at the end of this video This manga is so important to me, the characters are incredible, Yoh 's personality makes me a better personne, I read the manga a bunch of times and I'm always amazed by how good this character is. The end of the first anime makes me so angry, it's the total opposite of his goal. This guy wants the peace in the world, without fighting anyone, this is such a good lesson I'll always be grateful for Hiroyuki Takei for creating such an amazing story Thak you too for loving shaman king as much as I do, if only I had a friend like you in my childhood
I totally get where you're coming from. I don't think even today anyone I know irl knows what Shaman King is. Really grateful to have folks like yourself to talk about stuff like this with. Hoping to pick up Shaman King again soon, really hyped for the remake and keen to get talking about it again
It's shocking Yoh is the Twin brother of Hao but despite that? He tries to save his own Twin brother from going insane even when Hao became God. You gotta love Yoh for even caring for him.
Yoh is for sure one of my favorite heroes of all time. Yoh is 100% the chill I admire. I want just a small but happy and relaxing life. I'll work what I need to, hard IF I need to. But I'm pretty happy chillin' like a villain and enjoying myself.
Yoh is a special and unique protagonist. The only fictional character whose example you want to follow, not because of vanities such as his strength, his money or his power, but because of his pacifist, gentle and calm character (added to the tenderness he overflows). Besides all this of the character adding that "dark" side that he himself has...makes him a complete character in every sense. Yoh is the sun that after being covered by dark and cold clouds, still shines brightly and gives warmth to those he touches. That is Yoh's ability: to be a source of love, trust and reassurance. Something that everyone needs at some point, even if they are not looking for it. Yoh gives to others what he was not given: trust, understanding, support and security. That's why all the characters who have gone through what he went through feel safe by his side. They can feel that they can finally rest from the martyrdom they went through and start again. They can feel that they are no longer alone. Without a doubt, Takei-sensei created a special and unrepeatable character. How I love Yoh! ❤❤ I personally believe that Yoh and Hao are Shaman King, that is, the essence, the soul and the heart of the work. Without them, Shaman King is not Shaman King. Excellent video. ❤❤❤❤❤
It's sad to me that Shaman King and Yoh both don't get as much recognition as they should because of how lowkey they are. SK was never particularly popular overseas the way Naruto, Bleach and One Piece were. Those three always overshadowed SK, often falling into common storytelling tropes and means of storytelling and, imo, not properly pulling through with them. I know lots of people loved Naruto for being "different", and I can admit as someone who finished the manga that he was... well, different, but Yoh was both different /and/ not someone who just... won. Naruto always seemed to win somehow, someway, even if it took time. Yoh doesn't win, and in fact, is proven to be less powerful than someone else constantly (example, when he first meets Ren, when he first meets the X-Laws, or even by how both Chocolove and Horohoro are stronger than Yoh by the end of the series (and Chocolove was stronger by a LOT). Yoh isn't overpowered and never /becomes/ overpowered. Naruto becomes Hokage one day and reaches his goal. Yoh never becomes Shaman King. Both Naruto and Yoh start in the exact same place, and I mean basically like, in every way too - but it's Yoh who comes out on top for me because he doesn't eventually fall into the usual type of Shonen story we see, nor does he become a typical Shonen main character. Eventually it gets tiring seeing the same old story - main protagonist starts out weak then becomes super powerful and gets what they want. Yoh doesn't get so much stronger that he could take on anyone in the Shaman Fight, and even if he could, ultimately his only reason for wanting to be Shaman King is that he was pushed into it and decided he could live an easy life if he won. He doesn't do it for power or recognition and he's quite happy with just his small group of friends. What Shaman King and Yoh bring to the table is that you see the world through the eyes of a mediocre person who is just that and never more. Shaman King has a subtle and gentle means of storytelling imo, and Yoh is the perfect face of that. He's not particularly special, but he sees someone who is lonely and hurting like he was, and he's drawn to Hao and wants to help him. As people, we're attracted to others we can relate to, and Yoh does just that: he doesn't run the course of a usual protagonist and try to defeat the antagonist. He realizes the antagonist is still experiencing the exact same kind of pain he used to know, and worse, he's been experiencing it for a thousand years. Imo Shaman King isn't about Yoh becoming Shaman King or even trying to be: it's his experiences along the way. Yoh isn't there to /become/ Shaman King - he's there to be the Shaman King's anchor and emotional support, but he's also an amazing protagonist while doing it.
This was a thought-provoking and well-presented video essay. As a longtime fan of the series I really loved hearing your insight on SK and I can't wait for the new anime adaptation!
I just discovered this video and im so grateful to see it. Shaman King is my very favoorite fictional story in the entire world, it mirrors spirituality at its purest form, and i have set my life style from the many learnings i had woth this stioy. I must confess i never interpretated Yoh and his reasons the way you did here, but it acually make sense and make it even more beautiful. I like how you take loneliness as the essential topic it is in the show. As to you, Yoh is THE role model to me, a difficult one to reach, but the best. As someone who loves anime and manga, and have has difficulties to find people to talk about those things too, i thank you for sharing you appreciation with us. I feel related. ¡Thanks!
Glad to hear you had a similar experience with Shaman King! I love how these series can cause such a change in how we think. I feel you with not having people to talk anime and manga with so thanks for sharing your thoughts here! I always love what people's experiences were with my favourite series
Funnily enough Yoh is a lot more succesfull at Taoism (Daoism) then Tao Ren, who is supposed to be The prodigial scion of The Taoist family out there. Yoh's character is almost like perfectly balanced around the concept of wu-wei (achieving goals through the absence of action of going with the flow).
I loved the video. I’m glad I found it. I consider myself a big fan of the series and I completely agree with your point of view and how you describe Yoh as a unique shonen main character. I’d love to watch more of your videos talking about SK
Im 28 was never into anime but was always into shaman king. I found book 1 in a barns and noble while ironically making fun of manga. no lie something about it called to me and I asked my mom to get it for me. shortly after that the 4 kids series started and I just fell in love. for me it was a story about a kid who wanted to take on the world to become God just to chill and live easy. it's crazy that I carried that ideal with me and hit life hard af and thought I was at that point. Hell that all hits close to home. Sorry to hear the hot mess of 2020 got you too. I hope lifes picking up for you and 2021 can bring you up to new heights. Since Yoh's got a comeback this year with the remake dropping, I reckon you've got a comeback this year too. Hit me up if you ever need someone to talk to or chill playing games with (I'll chuck a Twitter link in the description or something). Take care of yourself mate. Cheers
Yes. We do want more Shaman King. I'm very glad that you're making these videos. Keep making them. They are very beautiful. I attempted making a video for youtube a few weeks ago about Shaman King. Didn't really work out haha
This hit close to home. Yoh was one of the anime characters i was firstly acquanted to, while back then he didnt really affect me that much. Other characters like judai (yugioh Gx) and Takato or t.k from Digimon were my rolemodels. But now i see that my now-personality or mostly mentality is very much like that of yoh. I always secretly respected him, cant wait for the new anime.
Also, sorry for comment spamming, but you're the only one on youtube (at least from what I've seen) who's making consistent videos about Shaman King, and your way of talking about it, it's very realistic, you're not praising something for no reason, your fair critisieis great.
@@SeaGee so I'm glad. Here's an idea. Umm what do you think about the power system and the ghosts in general, how does that make their world look like, how does that shape it into its own thing?
I think the power system of Shaman King is pretty loose when you get down to specifics. I think Takei kept it intentionally more vague to stop inconsistencies (like how a spirits power affects an oversoul Vs just furyoku). That being said it's still comprehensive enough that you can understand what's going on through the series without having to fact check what characters should be able to do. As far as power scaling goes, RIZEXX has done a good article which is linked in the ending explained comments. Worth checking out if you're interested in that stuff. The world building around spirits could be discussed for ages. Maybe a topic I pick up with the anime next year ahah. Thanks again Northern Wind!
This is a lovely video. Shaman King was a show that got me in a personal, almost life-changing way too. I didn't realize just how lonely I was until several years after I got into the show but I always found myself drawn to the loneliest characters in the show.... the Asakura twins. When I was younger, Hao was the one I related to more, wanting to be angry and fight against the cause of my loneliness. But now that I'm older, watching the remake, I find myself drawn to Yoh too. He faces his struggles with a calmness that is enviable. As someone with anxiety, I find Yoh a calming character in a show with many other loud people. You know you can trust him, not because he is the protagonist but because his reasons to be kind comes from a genuine desire to cherish the bonds he has with people. Such a unique and well-made character.
I love your videos about SK. They’re always well thought, heart felt and they show how in depth you are with the series to the point of making it a huge part of your life as mentioned here.❤️
I didn’t finish your video because of spoilers, but From my perspective you don’t sound mad crazy or dumb at all, because of the title of your video and i can tell you’re ahead of the generation. 🔥🙏🏽🔥
@@SeaGee I’m working on it through the anime, i’m on episode 32. I may get the manga in the future. ruclips.net/video/zp6_kvcEI_4/видео.html They made a short bio of the creator of shaman king. I don’t believe there’s much spoilers in it but you should check it out. There’s the link.
Thank you so much for making this video! ♥️ Shaman King has changed my life as well, and it's so valuable to hear someone beautifully articulate their love and understanding of the series. Thank you! ♥️ (And yes, more! Please more!)
Thank you so much for this video! It shows exactly why yoh is my favourite character in fiction. I would love to see a video about the osorezan chapters. Best love story ever...
I can now why can relate to Yoh so much in terms of how I view life. Looks like I also took a few lessons from him when I was a kid! Would you be analysing the other characters as well like this? I would love to see more of this with the Shamam King Characters!! (Faust and Eliza are my 2nd main favourites then Jun 😁🤗)
Glad I'm not the only one learning from Yoh! No plans to hit the other characters at the moment. Maybe closer to the anime dropping next year I'll read through again. Faust would definetely be one of the first ones i'd do though! I love how he achieves his goal to reunite with Eliza and then is just the biggest supporter of Funbari Onsen!
I'm really glad I found this video, especially with the announcement of the series. Really hope they'll do it right. :) I don't know if it was your voice and calmness (can totally see in it the yoh influence now that you mention it :))) but I was really paying attention to everything you said. If you want to do more on Shaman King, please do :)
I grew up watching this show, and this video brought tears to my eyes Yoh is also the only character I wanted to be like ever. He was somewhat like a role model to me. Although I never got to be like him I’m so glad this anime exists. I’m going to watch this anime again right the way
Funny enough, I was struggling hard with kind of the same problems when I watched Shaman King, back in my teenhood. I've managed to go through all of them, and solve the root of my mental problems, and under all of that, I've come to realize that my personality is kind of like Yoh's. In a way, I also looked up to him, but I didn't realize it until my own demons were solved (not gone), and used in a good way. Surprising how media can shape young minds.
gonna admit this here, Shaman King was my first actual Manga I ever read, I was in the 4th grade and the first volume was being sold in one of those scholastic book orders and I ordered it (with the help of my mother) since thing I have been hooked with the series. I love Shaman King and I am super excited to see the new Anime that is about to come out.
What a good way to break into the series! I wish my school's had manga available at book fairs. I'm super hyped for the new anime too! Only like a week away now!!
Yoh is like Allen Walker from D Gray Man, people who are very mature for their age and aren't as say eccentric and "obnoxious" as other anime protagonists
The themes in Shaman king resonate with me my entire life. From being different from everyone, to Yoh's acceptable of things, to Hao's hatred of humanity born from pain, to Lyserg's need for justice, to the very idea of Reishi- I could list things all day. That the wall _is_ often too high, and acceptance and love is the answer. It is. Things are.
Thank you for these videos... I haven't had many shaman king fan encounters growing up and it did feel lonely... I'm very grateful this was the first shounen anime i've stumbled across as a kid though the 4kids version butchered it to hell. I love this series so much and i want others to see the unique qualities it brings to the table.
Yoh: "It'll all work out". Subtly conveying the character's laid-back personality and positive outlook on life. Asta: *"MY MAGIC IS NEVER GIVING UP!!!!!!"* Literally screaming to the audience the character's trait without a single solitary shred of subtlety.
Through i am sure its honestly astas way of pushing phrough despite the physical pain and talking him down. Its a different style, but yeah,in overuse in anime,of course it would b grating, and it becomes less that. And i think it was being clishee to get continued. He is a good over the top character, just jo,is better.
Totally not crying *weep*,its really a good rolemodel series. The manga ending probably too. The entite franchise, has soul, eh. Even has discriminatin and destruction of the environment, that is very relevant, i can even get haos wish. Its really good teaching lessons in regard of social responsibility and how to keep up believing there can be change. I think at least.
I'm so bloody hyped for next year's anime release!! The 2001 edition takes a very different direction in story but that's actually going to be the next video out. Still wholeheartedly recommend the manga!
Ahah I think Fairy Tail was never really a series for me. I pushed myself through the whole thing but it never manage to grab me. What happens around 329? It's been a hot minute since I did my read through

Thanks again Northern Wind! I just like talking about the stories I like. Glad it's enjoyable!
@@SeaGee you're welcome, glad we shared a few opinions and thanks. I'll check that out. Wish you the best with your content.
Thank you very much, my friend. I feel you. I loved this series as a teenager and reflect fondly. Blessed be.
Thanks Victor, I hope you're keeping well!
Im so glad someone feels the same way. Since I was 5, Yoh has been my biggest idol and a part of me I carry wherever I go 🙏
I am very glad there are others out there who are giving this cherished manga favorite an analysis and proper highlight.
Thanks! It's certainly a series that deserves some more appreciation
I love your videos about SK. They’re always well thought, heart felt and they show how in depth you are with the series to the point of making it a huge part of your life as mentioned here.❤️
Thank you! That's super kind, I really appreciate it. Glad my thoughts are coming across well ❤️
I didn’t finish your video because of spoilers, but From my perspective you don’t sound mad crazy or dumb at all, because of the title of your video and i can tell you’re ahead of the generation. 🔥🙏🏽🔥
Thanks so much, that's very kind. I hope you've been enjoying Shaman King!
@@SeaGee I’m working on it through the anime, i’m on episode 32. I may get the manga in the future.

They made a short bio of the creator of shaman king. I don’t believe there’s much spoilers in it but you should check it out. There’s the link.
I really needed this these days. Thank you.
Thank you Neftali! I hope you're keeping well.
He was my first childhood crush besides Inuyasha
I always looked up to Yoh as a kid while watching the 4 Kids dub. He's truly always got a special place in my heart.
Thank you so much for making this video! ♥️ Shaman King has changed my life as well, and it's so valuable to hear someone beautifully articulate their love and understanding of the series. Thank you! ♥️
(And yes, more! Please more!)
Thank YOU Maria! You're too kind. I just hope I can do this great story some justice and help some future fans get into it!
I'm with you, brotha.
Nice thumbnail change! At first I thought I was crazy because I remembered the old thumbnail!
Thanks Lyserg! You can thank Dimzy at Shaman Tribe for that! I've been loving his thumbnails so got him to give me some tips 😅
Loved this so much. Probably gonna watch shaman king again now
Enjoy it! What a good series!
loved this video at 1.25x speed, your voice sounded so crisp and it was way more engaging. keep it up!
Thanks for the tip! Got some faster video ideas in the pipeline, excited to see how they go
Thank you so much for this video! It shows exactly why yoh is my favourite character in fiction. I would love to see a video about the osorezan chapters. Best love story ever...
Yoh's so great! Osorezan should be out this weekend so great timing
Thanks so much! Hopefully the anime comes together well. That new teaser got me hyped!
Thanks for this video we share the same love for the character
Loved this my dude
Thanks dude, I appreciate it
YOH IS ROLE MODEL FOR ME TOO !
I grew up watching this show, and this video brought tears to my eyes Yoh is also the only character I wanted to be like ever. He was somewhat like a role model to me. Although I never got to be like him I’m so glad this anime exists. I’m going to watch this anime again right the way
Enjoy the rewatch Oscar! Glad other people find Yoh as a good role model too
Funny enough, I was struggling hard with kind of the same problems when I watched Shaman King, back in my teenhood.
Great Video dude . Keep it up .
Thanks Raviv!
This is awesome I love it
Yoh is like Allen Walker from D Gray Man, people who are very mature for their age and aren't as say eccentric and "obnoxious" as other anime protagonists
It is. Things are.
the heart
the soul
the will
like a leaf admits a mighty typhoon can never be touched or turned
that is asakura yoh
You know Yoh is something else when poems drop in the comments. Love your work Memebrain
that's the sheer enthusiasm I had over this underrated series
Quite remarkable you chose the leaf metaphor. Hao's name literal meaning is "king of leaves"
jarvis muharhararr yoh also means leaf and it was intended
Thank you for these videos... I haven't had many shaman king fan encounters growing up and it did feel lonely...
I'm very grateful this was the first shounen anime i've stumbled across as a kid though the 4kids version butchered it to hell.
I love this series so much and i want others to see the unique qualities it brings to the table.
Thanks Killakuma, I feel that. Hopefully the remake next year will open this series up to some new fans!
There probably are, they just never got that big traction. I bet many would notice, "oh yeah, i loved that"
goosebumps here
Awesome video!! I’ve been trying to find analysis videos about Anna but have been coming up empty. I hope to hear your thoughts on her
Thanks Bri! Stay tuned for before the remake drops! Planning to do some more character stuff soon
Shaman King needs more attention, Yoh is just a great character
Yes please more
Yoh mastered the superior instinct of lo fi
Cool Video😊
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
I love Shaman king and cant wait untill April. Even though Hao is my love. Yoh is amazing too
SK got the best character design. Especially the gods and angel spirits
I love Shaman King.
so happy I found this! thank you!
Can someone tell me what song is played during the part from 4:46 to 7:06. I can't find it and need to know
Yoh Asakura: Steven Universe done right
Good Donkey Kong entrance music
The DK soundtracks are surprisingly good
You said Yoh is one of your role models, I'm curious who are the others?
Moreeeee
Iam opposite of yoh
iam alot like his twin Hao Asakura
i can recover from who hurt me but i can't forgive them .
unless they give me a reason. to
I long to be like Yoh
HAHAH THE FAIRY TAIL SCENE OF NATSU
2:53 Jake
Shaman King is one my favorite shows this show was precursor to Bleach. Yo was the dopest character I learn to be frees spirit from Yo.
Love the story first Shonen along with yu yu Hakusho were the main character isn't the victor of his manga!.
I've never got round to reading Yu Yu. Would you recommend it?
@@SeaGee Yes it's a great read the main character is similar to ichigo and opposite of yoh.
Awesome, I'll check it out!
squid game moment 0:10
yoh is zen
read the manga? there is a tv show for sharman king
I'm so bloody hyped for next year's anime release!! The 2001 edition takes a very different direction in story but that's actually going to be the next video out. Still wholeheartedly recommend the manga!
The old tv show doesn't stick to the original Manga. So the Manga is way better. The new Anime will adapt the Manga correctly
hollow knight
An amazing game; dare I say, an even better soundtrack
Ahahahah fairy tail was the best example. It went to crap by chapter 329
Ahah I think Fairy Tail was never really a series for me. I pushed myself through the whole thing but it never manage to grab me. What happens around 329? It's been a hot minute since I did my read through
Living for others will always catch the eyes of true mangaka
