Thanks. I was not into this camera at all when it was announced but the more reviews I read and watched, the more interested I got. This isn't supposed to be a digital camera with a great sensor and excellent image quality, what would be the point? There are tons already out there. Its supposed to have a lo-fi look, offering unique combinations of lenses and filters, and it looks to excel at that. Ive seen some really creative and interesting shots done with it from other reviewers. Looking forward to getting mine tomorrow.
I agree but feel that for this offshoot of the Instax line to be successful in future iterations, they must give us a better sensor and processor, and give us manual control. The sensor should be able to expose for correct skin tones and the sky at the same time. I also think that the lens options and filters are kind of like Lightroom for the Evo. They really are fun and useful. I originally thought it was just a gimmick, but it's not. They are a good addition. I even don't mind the artificial limitation od not editing or applying effects after the image is taken. Something what should be capable because of the digital image. But here, I think the limittion is good for creativity. Cheers.
I just ordered this camera. I have what i need for quality photos when i need amd also a larger printer. This will be for fun and getting physical photos on the spot
Wow Rob, solid story. This review is among the best I have watched on YT over a long time. Although I am not interested in buying one it was great to watch. Also, I like that Fuji is also doing different stuff besides normal cameras. BTW it is a bit quiet on the Fuji camera front lately. O yes, before I forget, a sensor is NOT DIGITAL, it is an analog device (MORE LIGHT MORE OUTPUT VOLTAGE) , after the picture is taken it will be converted to digital in the A/D convertor. Anyways, thanks for sharing.
Hello, Rob. Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you liked the preview. This is an interesting camera. I like it, but Fujifilm didn't go far enough with it in this revision. Maybe they can unlock additional features in a firmware update. I will continue to test the camera. Although I had no interest in this camera when it was announced, it has grown on me in the short time I have had it. I like the concept. That's one of the reasons I wish the sensor and processor were better. It could have been the definitive way to shoot Instax mini film with a better sensor, processor, and unlocked software (like manual control and better image storage options). Maybe next time. I agree that the sensor is a physical analog for film and that it converts a physical process into a digital signal. You are right about that. When I talk about this stuff sometimes I oversimplify things. I kept calling the a lot lens a real lens during the conversation, too. Both the lenses are real lenses. I was really talking about the difference in the printing process, image exposure on the film verses printing the digital image. I also said that the TL70 exposes a negative image on Instax film, but Instax film is a Positive Film, not negative. These things can become so technical that I twist it up. Although the terms aren't always perfect, I hope that the idea I'm trying to get across comes through. In this instance, the TL70 produces the best image on Instax film in my experience. I wish the Evo would have had a better processor and sensor. It would have been nice for it to have matched the TL70 instead of the mini 90 (at least I print quality- there is now at the lens on the Evo could produce the kind of boked the TL70 makes). Fujifilm has made some headlines with the XT3WW and discontinuing the XT3. So that's something, right? Not really. I hear rumor of an XH2 and if you look at their x series lineup you will see that Fujifilm considers the XH1 their flagship camera ahead of the Xpro3 and Xt4. Strange. I have to say that I love the Xpro3 series. I should have never sold my XPro1. I have been considering the Xpro3. I really like that camera and what it represents. Thanks as always, and cheers.
@@RobertHamm Yeah I got you. What I meant was it is about time for some new Fuji camera's, also in the small MF line. There are always rumors but I rather stick with really comes out. I still like Fuji and what they stand for, although I switched to Leica and to be honest, the output of a Leica camera with a Leica lens is something different. When I take shots and watch the screen on the back of the camera, I think mmmmm is this good enough but when I come home and watch the RAW files on my 5K 27 inch monitor, man it brings a smile on my face every time. I hardly to non touch the colors in post editing, if my intention are keeping the color images, cause often I turn them in to B/W. But deep in my heart I love the 50, 60 70 and 80's B/W film images, man I have seen so many films and video's of photographers of that era.
It's fun for anyone, but specifically the perfect entry-level choice for kids and young teens. 100 combos is enough for variation, while NOT being overwhelming so they feel defeated or throw it in a box never to be seen again. They don't have to rely on adults to hand over their phones, but CAN still print photos taken there. iPads support microSD card readers now, so they can independently transfer photos. It's stylish to wear on the included strap, and with a 3rd party lens cover attached it'll survive going out and about. And not only does it not waste money printing photos you didn't wind up liking, when you do want to print it prints without the need of parents to facilitate anything! Canva can overlay a poloroid border in an instant, so it doesn't matter if you print or not. It's really great, I've been doing a pen pal thing with my 11yro nephew with ours where we mail each other a picture of the ocean, or a bird in our area, etc.
Wow this review is in depth in so many strange ways, but it really undervalues the feeling this camera provides the end user. It's fun, it recaptures a good bit of that feeling we got taking polaroids back in the day. For the price, it offers exactly what one SHOULD expect from, what is essentially, a nostalgic toy. It's easy to use, great for kids and adults alike, but if what you're really after are better sensors, premium materials, etc, be prepared to dislike it as much as the reviewer and get ready to pay more than $199. There are actual real issues that can be worked on (built in battery, no lens cover, not usb c) which would have been fair critiques for such a unit, but a lot of the complaints here is from comparing Ferraris to Corollas. A tl70 is not comparable, it just isn't. Also, I'm seeing in the comments that it's being suggested that pastels are for women? Kids these days don't just buy blue things because they're boys and pink because they're girls lmao it's 2022, (and if they are it's because we have adults telling them that's how it should be) they know better and we should too.
As to colors, Fujifilm is the one who built the Instax brand on marketing to females in middle school to college using rounded corners, pastel colors, and "cute appointments". All of those traits appeal to females more than men, in general, and that demographic is represented in the people they show using their products. Historically this has been done using girls and women far more than boys or men. Fujifilm themselves are making that statement in their media and marketing. I just pointed it out. This is clearly seen with the Mini 90 and The Mini EVO. Both of those cameras featured marketing with masculine styling and featured more males in the media. Compare it to a TL70, yes, absolutely. It's an instant camera. That comparison directly illustrates the differences between an actual analog instant camera and a digital camera with a printer slapped on it. Between the two, the TL70 produces a better image for the exact reason you would expect: it's a real analog process from the lens, exposure, and development. Would I pay more for a better sensor and premium build on a Gen 2 Mini Evo? Yes, absolutely. It's a good idea that needs improvement in digital file IMAGE QUALITY. This is the part of the video that you completely missed. Unbelievable, really. My gripe is that the small 10-year-old sensor produces horrible digital images. How did you miss that? The prints look nice because they are smaller than a credit card in size, and that small size hides the errors in the sensor. How did you miss that? In order to understand why the small sensor is bad I had to explain the difference.. How did you miss that valuable connection? You said "in depth in so many strange ways", yet you missed the point entirely. How much do you know about photography? The nostalgia of using a vintage Polaroid is remembered fondly because they took sharp excellent images. Did you ever use one of those cameras in the time they were new? If not. Go get an SX70, slap in some film, and take a picture. The difference is that that image will be archival in quality and will look great 30 years from now. The file the sensor in the Evo creates IS NOT good and unusable for archiving your life. As I say I'm the video, you would be better served using your current cellphone to document your life than relying on the digital files produced by the EVO.
Was planning on getting the mini evo to replace my perfectly working link printer, just added feature of being able to use the printer, but as I mostly shoot with a camera and print it via my phone anyways looks like I'll just save it trouble and keep using the link printer.
Thanks for the review. i noticed they have a brown one & i want that one as it has USB type-C (one less cable to carry) & i wonder if that's the only difference or if they improved some software tweaks as well.
I was looking into that as well and don't believe that they have improved software or sunlight viewing of the screen, which I think is pretty bad. I live in a very sunny area. As for the update of the color and addition of usbc- yes! Both are great. USBC should have been on it from the beginning, and the addition of the new color isn't anything out of the ordinary for Fujifilm. They do this kind of thing often. Also, all models will now have the USBc.. including all new production black models. Very good stuff if you ask me. I was hoping a refresh would bring a better sensor for digital files, but, alas, that didn't make the cut just yet. It will, but not now. This is Funifilms' best selling camera from what I've heard , and I'm happy for them for that.
@@RobertHammwanted the black one but i went ahead & ordered the brown as the stores online still list micro-usb for the black version i didn't want to get an old stock. I already can't wait for an upgraded sensor, i know they're just being cheap & targeting a broad demographic. An upgraded pro version+manual controls would be a dream especially for low light. s/o to the EU for the 2024 usb-c mandate 😂 EU user removable battery mandate would be great for the next upgrade.
Thank you so much for this detailed review! I love to take pictures, share them & care about the way they look! I hate editing photos & having to wait for prints! I love the look of the old analog camera! I’m leaning towards the printer to go along w/my cell phone. There are so many apps to get the different looks that can be printed out! TL70 looks very cool, I’ll see if I can find one to add it to my camera museum! 😊
Thank you for the details! Maybe you can help with my decision? I’m a flight attendant and I already have an Instax wide but it’s too big to travel with. I like the idea of the instax mini printer so I can just print from my phone but I also appreciate the vintage aspect of the mini evo. I also was trying to take into consideration for the price of the mini film vs wide film. Which would you choose if you were in my position mini evo or instax mini printer or wide printer?
Great question. It's completely up to you. Bigger is always better when it comes to prints, but the Evo is so much fun. Here's the thing, you want those instant prints. You travel, they're fun, it's exciting to use an instant camera and see the prints develop. I get it. Get the Evo. It'll be exactly what you want. The prints will be small, but they are the cheapest print you can get, and if you buy in bulk you can get the price down to about .50 a shot. You're going to have your phone with you anyway. Just remember that if you want a shot that you may actually print to put in a frame on the wall, you'll need to take a second shot on your phone. The Evo is good for instant prints and reprints, but the digital file is terrible for enlargements. You won't like it. The Instax wide link printer is awesome. It's bigger, makes a bigger print, has some extra features that are fun, and you will never need to take two shots. But you won't have the fun experience of using the Evo like a retro camera. That's more than half of the fun. So, it's up to you.. but the Evo is more fun. I'd get the Evo.
Hello how are you doing? I ha e bought the instax fujifilm mini 40. I bought it today for 90,99 at my local Electronic store. I love it. I used all my films that i bought today😅😅😅😅 i wanna buy more film tommorow wen i go on a hike orna bike ride. I also bought a case for my retro camera. The case can hold: the camera,2 aa batteries,2 films and has a shoulder strap😊
Hi Rob! I saw your videos and I get a inscribir mini evo, I don’t know if it’s normal that the battery life of my camera is between 30-45 minutes 😥 is it normal? Should I get another camera?
Loving your Channel! Just bought this little cutie yeaterday 🙈.. and I'd really like a viewfinder for it. Would you recommend the 28mm or 35mm? Thanks so much!
You can get different color borders by buying different color borders films. If you didn't know, fugigilm Instax mini comes in a lot of colors. White is the most common. If you black border film, just buy the black film pack. Same goes for any other color you can think of. Cheers.
I just got an Evo and I'm not sure if mine is defective. Based on your videos you say that the print quality is better on the Evo vs other Instax devices but I compared them to the SQ1 & Mini Link 2 and the sharpness is better on those prints than on my Evo. The sharpness really fails in mine, especially when taking pictures of people. Portraits and pictures of people come out blurred and washed out, almost as if there's a beautifying filter over the face. Beards are washed out and small details in the face, that appear in prints for the SQ1 for example, disappear in the Evo prints. And these are the pictures I take directly on the camera because printing from the app is worse. I've tried several combinations of settings to no avail, from turning on/off macro, face detection, rich mode, natural mode, AF illuminator and the like. I even have the Ulanzi light you have but bigger. Can you confirm if the sharpness is better on the Evo vs the other prints and what exact settings you use when taking portraits or pictures of people, would appreciate it!
Hello. The sharpness of my copy is very good. I get a blurry photo from time to time as with any camera, but in general use, images look good to me. However, it is difficult to say exactly what I'm seeing compared to what you're seeing. The print is an analog process from a digital file and as such, can vary from print to print. See this video for a comparison of images. Good luck! ruclips.net/video/wsRM7WGYHM4/видео.html
You will have a lot of fun with the EVO. It's a good photography experience and comes with some useful filters to mix and match. It is a good camera. You will love the prints. The ONLY issue to be aware of is the digital file is bad in my opinion. If you ever wanted to take the digital files off the camera and load them to your computer to print them larger, then the small file captured by the EVO would not be very useful. It would make bad prints with noticable splotchy colors and blown out highlights. This is because the sensor is optimized for making great Instax mini prints. Anything bigger than a credit card size starts to look bad. It gets worse the bigger you print. So, if you are worried about that, then get a share printer and save some money.. OR get the EVO, and print pics from your phone and from the EVO. It does both. Cheers.
i wanted to get an instant camera for the experience since i never owned one.. and evo seemed to be perfect given its digital aspect.. but now im wondering if i shud stick to a printer since my phone does a decent job of clicking pics.. the printer seems like the right choice from a monetary stand point but misses out on the joy of owning an instant cam..
If you get a printer, get the Instax wide link. It has so many features that you will find useful. I guess that recommended is if you are considering instant prints. If you don't mind considering other printers, then the Canon Selphy 1300 line is great. It costs less per print, Prints 4x6 pictures, and uses a 4 step dye sublimation process. It's really good. I use dye sublimation printers at all my photobooths for weddings, specifically the DNP DS 40 and 80. But... You will loose out on the instant experience. I have to say, that I would get the EVO. You get the best of printing and photographing. Also, the prints aren't bad. I like them a lot. Compared to others, maybe not as good, but it's still a good print- the digital image should only be considered a backup for making more prints. I like mine. Let me know how it goes. Cheers.
@@RobertHamm thank you so much for the recommendations.. i am certainly hunching towards the instant experience.. waiting for evo to come in stores and then i will decide what to proceed with..
Do you think i should get mini evo ? - i could choose which photo to print (film) which led to unwasted print film (i mean the film here so pricey) - loveddd the mirror effect - and correct me if im wrong.. i could saved or backup the countless picture on the SD Card? Thus transfer to my computer? Is the image not that good when it got transferred to computer? - thinking to buy it for my first Japan trips! Would like to take a lot of pictures!
You will enjoy the camera for the instant prints. It's fun, and the prints look good most of the time. You won't have to waste film and the filters are good for making your images unique. The digital camera part is bad. The digital images are not good for documenting trips or birthdays. They are too low quality when transfered to a computer. You will want to take a small camera or use your cell phone to get better digital images for documenting your special occasions. The camera works great as an instant camera. The film prints will look nice because they are small and because the organic analog che!istey of the film developing hids a lot of flaws. So, for an instant camera, it's very good. I like it a lot. As a digital camera, it is very bad. You will be very unhappy if you think it can be used as both an instant camera with archival quality digital images. It will not do that. Bring this camera and another camera. Good luck.
I think these hybrid cameras are in a very strange location. on one hand, I buy, and probably several others a standard polaroid / Instax for the whole charm of not really knowing the end result of the image but also because each image is unique. Somewhat these hyrbrid kinda removes, due of you got the option to pick your favorite before print and you can save on your pc. But on the other hand, standard polaroid / Instax can be very expensive, if many pictures end up bad and something you just want a good copy to save on your PC aka a digital camera. Anyhow i use my instax wide to print out my Sony A6600 photos, while when i wanna go retro i use my instax 40
What a good point. Save some money and loose the uniqueness of the point of instant photography. I think hybrid is the future here, with a couple of improvements. We have to get a better sensor. It's good enough for the print, but not for digital archiving. Thanks for your comment.
A good review. I am debating buying the EVO vs. the Mini Link printer. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. I like the idea of being able to take a photo and print from the same device. On the other hand, like you said in the video, my smartphone can take a much better photo and the Mini Link printer is much more versatile in terms of its feature set vs. the EVO. It’s also cheaper. I still don’t know which is the best for me.
If the cost savings is important to you, and I know it is to me, then get the link printer. You'll love it and all of the extra features. However, if you want the best of both worlds and don't mind spending the extra money, the Evo will give you a great print from phone experience (with some added features like remote view shooting) as well as a very fun and unique photography experience.
Hey Robert great in-depth review. Just curious as to how you got the camera early as I have it saying to be released on Feb 1 on amazon. Did you pre order on amazon or a different site?
I didn't so anything special. I just pre-ordered it on Adorama around Jan 5, maybe earlier. A few days ago I got a notification that it had shipped and I would receive it on the 22nd. At the time I made the video I had the camera for about 36 hours.
So what do you recommend then? I mean I wanted a hybrid so I had a screen so you could see your photo beforehand. I have one from tween 2017 to 2019 summer around there I got one at one it was I think it was like a mini 7 Or it was an eight good deal on eBay. And I loved it use that for a few years then December 2019 I got the printer and that is great for when you want to print photos you took of your phone but for parties I need something the one I have it doesn’t take the best photos I felt like I was going through a lot of film one film takes 10 photos and out of maybe five photos out of 10 one might be good and I waste film. So that was my problem and film is not cheap I haven’t been able to since 2019 or 2018 found a good deal on the twin pack of film for the mini. So that’s why I was like maybe on the camera we can see what you take but I hear lol those aren’t the best so what do you recommend a new one for like barbecues in the summer time y’all and your friends wanna take photos like I really want one of those but I don’t wanna be wasting my money. Or do you recommend a different brand I don’t know I just need something what’s the best one for your money you had to get one take photos with your friends or family barbecue in the summertime or Fourth of July as a good example watch one would you get
The Evo is a fun camera. You will get better pictures with your cell phone over the digital image the Evo captures, but the application is up to you. I like my Evo a lot. You don't waste film, there are lots of fun modes and effects, and it's easy. The camera is slow compared to your cell phone. There can be a delay when pushing the shutter button. It's hard to capture kids or puppies playing because of the shutter lag. If it fits your needs, get one. There isn't anything else like it on the market.
YOU DIDN'T TALK ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING!!! Is it worth it to buy the mini evo or is it better to buy the Mini link 2. I think mini evo gives better prints compared to the mini link 2 EVEN when they both use the same film. Don't know why and hadn't been able to find ANY SINGLE DATA about that. I have only seen the comparison in one single video here on youtube. Given that the mini evo is twice the price as the link 2 I would love to know if this is true or not.
Look up the printer user manual and it will tell you the print resolutions of each device. Just go to Fujifilm support and you'll find your answer. The short story is there is a differences. Ut you wouldn't ever be able to tell with the human eye. If you want to know the exact specs then download the manuals and compare. You'll be surprised.
Hi, Fantastic review!! You are extremely knowable about these instant cameras. I am looking for a instant camera for my Daughter’s wedding. I need something that is good, and will take selfie pictures of different couples so they can leave their picture and a wedding blessing, comment , or suggestion in their guest book. I will never use the camera again. So essentially I need a point and shoot for selfies and then then post it in the newlyweds guestbook. What do you suggest. I hope I can find an answer to this.
Thanks. The problem you will face with the Instax selphy-booth you are planning is light. Instax prints need a lot of light. Many of your images will be taken at the reception and that is usually dark. I don't ever suggest an instant selphy-booth to DIY brides unless their wedding reception is outdoors during the day. The reason is simple- without the right amount of light the images will come out terrible. If you wanted to do it and can get enough light in the area you need using light sticks/led lights, or other augmented lighting, then here's what I suggest: Use an Instax mini camera and film. Get the two or three of the white border 100 film pack (however many images you think you will want- I always do 100-200 shots). Pick up a a cloth or paper backdrop. Sequins works well, you can find fabrics like that at Jo Anne's fabrics. You'll want a backdrop stand or tack the background to the wall. 100 film pack cheapest on Amazon right now: amzn.to/3A1idnV Check Walmart and best buy. They procematch and sometimes have Instax mini in a red box from Fujifilm directly for less. Then you'll need a cheap tripod and an instant camera with a self timer Instax Mini 70: amzn.to/3As3ZOi The mini 70 I listed is currently the cheapest Instax with self timer on Amazon right now. It comes with some bonus film. Finally, you'll want some lights. You're going to ened a lot of light- especially if you're doing this indoor at a dark reception. Trust me. You can totally use normal room lights. You want the area to be bright. Very bright. That's it. Take some test shots beforehand, make sure everything looks nice. Have a nice album and markers available. Sharpie's work the best for writing on the pictures. Cheers.
It's easy. Just have a lot of light of the area you will be shooting is dark. The film needs a lot of light. Watch my playlist about Instax photography. ruclips.net/p/PL4TP8LykMm38C3x3lXalGZlfe8PTH45SN
Hey I’ve got a question! I was interested in this as a beginner, but tbh I’m not crazy about the Polaroid feature. Are there any other digital cameras that you’re aware of that will shoot with that same like film/retro/ lowery quality vibe but not have the printing stuff? I wanted a similar camera for like selfies and vacations with unique images but I feel like the printing features is not something I’d pay more for. Anything under like 4-500?
Absolutely. And thanks for the great question. There is actually quite a lot to choose from, but I'm going to focus on some of the best cameras for what you are asking: Fujifilm X series cameras. If you can swing a used xT1 and lense for around 500-600 or a used XE 1 and lens for around 400, then you will have exactly what you want. If you could pick up an XPro1 and lens you would probably fall in love with the camera and run away to a paradise and be happy forever after. It's pretty expensive, though. What you are asking about, those retro lofi looking filters, are the stuff of smartphone apps. They aren't in many cameras, and the ones they are in are usually closer to the toy market(although not always). But you already knew that. Pretty much all interchangable lens digital cameras have the ability to shoot in creative modes defined by the maker. They usually are a bunch of low quality jpg modes with baked in profiles that look horrible most of the time. That's why I suggest Fujifilm. They are the king of film simulations. That is to say they are good at making jpg reproduction simulations of old film stocks. They are so good at it because Fujifilm makes real film and real digital cameras. So they put their expertise to the test and made film simulations for their cameras. Want to shoot Acros Black and white film on a digital camera? You can get that beautiful look of film on a Fujifilm Camera! How about the poppy saturation of provia film? Yeah, you got that. What about the beautiful softness and glow of Astia? Yup! Fujifilm includes that as their film simulation modes in all of their cameras. Newer cameras have more film simulations, but all of them have some. Getting an early model will still get you some of the best Fujifilm has to offer. Watch some videos on Fujifilm film simulations and get a camera you like. PS- they also added the ability for you to make your own film simulations on the camera and save them for future use. What more could you want? Good luck.
@@RobertHamm Okay, awesome! Thank you so much for all the info. So like as I mentioned earlier, If I’m a teen that kinda just wants that filmish look for photos just to take with friends and on vacation, do you think the mini evo would be a good choice? I’ll def look into the Xt-1, but after buying the additional lenses, it’s a little more than I intially wanted to spend. What do you think?
Yes, you will like it for that. You may find that you like printing more than you expect. Plus you can easily share all the images you have printed using the app and post them online.
If you use an sd card you can transfer your pictures to your computer? I’m thinking of buying one, so that could be a way of transferring the digital copy without having to print it
Hi. Thanks for your question. Yes. You can transfer the images to your computer from the SD card. It works just as you would expect. Just remember that the digital images are horrible. Please do not think that you would use these for anything other than an Instax print. Consider them backups from the images you want to print on Instax film. As an Instax print from the idigital files, they are good. I like the quality of the print. The analog chemistry of the Instax print hides many flaws in the digital image. The small size of Instax mini does as well. You will love the Instax film prints, but be very disappointed in the digital files on a computer. But that's ok. Just be aware of it. I like my Evo a lot. Cheers.
@@RobertHamm thank you so much for your quick response! I would use it mostly for the film prints, and to print from my phone, but if I want to share a digital print with my friends, if we take a picture together or something, is good to let them know it's not going to be the best quality but it's good for the memories :) your review helped a lot, keep doing the good work
For what you are talking about, you will love it. The digital image is small, but just good enough to share through the Instax Evo app. It will be great.
I don't know. Manual controls would give you better results on limited hardware. That's been my experience. I think they omitted it because it's just a point and shoot in their thought. It does have +/-2 stops of exposure compensation, so there is that.
Imagine if they built a “PRO” version of this camera. The ability to use actual lenses maybe, better build quality, better lens/sensor combination, removable battery… this supposed to be a FUN camera, but just a bump in specs/quality would make this an interesting add to the collection. 🤔
Yeah, I can imagine. I would gave settled for a better sensor and files.Almost anything would have been better that the sensor they chose. A better sensor would have made the digital files more usable off the SD card. FujiFilm thinks that they dont need to make an integrated premium camera out of the EVO because you can link any X-series camera to a printer and get the same effect. But I think they have it wrong. They would be sitting on top of a gold mind if they made something like an X100 with a built in printer and an all metal construction. I'd buy it and most people would too, even if it cost a lot. A premium all in one hybrid would be so cool. Have you ever heard of Mint Cameras? They make awesome fully manual instax based film cameras and I LOVE them. Cheers.
Which camera you recommend me to buy , to take retro, vintage pictures so i can make them digital and send it to my phone with out printing the image , I’ll just want the photo digital
I really dig the whole lo-fi digital camera+printer deal they’ve got. It’s the planned obsolescence aspect that doesn’t sit quite well with me. Edit: Plus it feeling like just an experiment, rather than a full fledge release of a fun concept.
It's definitely a fun camera. I think they would have had an even bigger hit if they had planned on a bigger sensor, better build, and replace le battery. Thanks for your comment.
Nice thorough review. That said, you are looking at this camera as a professional photographer, and not like a teenage girl. I suspect a teenager will outgrow this camera before the battery wears out etc. Who is the target audience that they are making this hybrid camera printer for? I also suspect If it proves successful and has enough interest they will build a Bigger be better model more in line with the mint TL70.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. You are right, I am not the exact market for this camera. But neither is the younger crowd. Instax has long been marketed to the scrapbooking community and younger generation, and I believe females moreso than men. I think this because of the overall styling of most Instax cameras- being pastel, with soft curves. It's totally a feminine design for the most part. Starting with the mini 90, Instax cameras began a division in their line, offering more retro styling, mature controls, and additional features. With that in mind. I can say that Fujifilm is directly targeting a higher end or more experienced photographer with the Evo. I see it in the styling, feature set, and mainly because of the special badge that it shares with the X@00 series cameras. Although the working is different, that badge is reserved for the prosumer powerhouse of the x100v (and earlier), and that is definitely a statement that Fujifilm wants people like me to take the Evo seriously. Cheers.
@@RobertHamm Good point and I agree with the pastels. Honestly I forgot about the scrapbooker crowd and you are right on! Makes me wonder if it will also be used by those making zines?? I do like the hybrid idea of only printing the decent images with proper exposure etc. It cuts down on waste in the landfill and of course expenses. I wonder if raw materials to make instax film is also a consideration? I do hope this evo idea does well. I would like to see it next in a wide format or square. A bigger print size would be fantastic! A 5x5 print would be awesome though probably cost prohibitive to many. Do you think they will upgrade the mint TL / TLR model? I love TLRs. I have a few from the 1950s and I just love them! I’m old. A dinosaur. Analog kind of person. I must admit this evo combination has me intrigued! You have in depth knowledge of all this “ newfangled “ gear!! Thanks for sharing!
Hi Artist, thanks for your comment and kind words. All I can say is that the Evo is a very good Instax camera. It's a horrible digital camera. If you think of your digital images as backup files to the Instax prints, then it should all fit together better. Fujifilm could make a 5x5 if they wanted to. The reason they don't is because all Instax film can be printed on the same machine. The difference is width. for a wider print, they would need new tooling and machines, SO, I don't think we will see a larger size... ever. I love Mint-Cameras. The company, the people... they are all great. Reach out to them on Facebook and they will be very talkative and engage with you. That's the kind of people they are. Will they update the TL70 for Instax square? I don't think so, but I wouldn't ever count them out. Gary and the team always have some new innovative idea around the corner. I have no information about what they plan to do, but considering that they just came out with the SF70, the square version of the RF70, I doubt they will update the TL70. We can hope, though. Keep in touch. I am iinterested to know about the artist living on the island. can you share a website or link? Cheers.
Interesting! Im sort of new to the camera world, but from this, it seems like Fujifilm is trying to create a digital camera that shoots and feels like film. I know film cameras are really trendy with the younger generation right now, so maybe that’s their target audience? The mini evo seems like it’s the perfect camera for the “feel” of a photo, and maybe that helps take better photos. The film and lens effects seem really cool.
Thanks for your comment. I agree with you and will add that Fujifilm seems to be extending the Instax line of cameras out from their target demographic. I believe that their general audience has been mostly scrapbookers, females, college students and the like. I say this only because the majority of Instax cameras are made with soft pastel colors and smooth lines. This suggests a youthful demographic as well. A couple of years ago they began to change that look when they introduced the Mini90. It has a more mature look and was reminiscent of a 1970's camera. It certainly had more features than any of their other cameras at the time. Later, Fujifilm started making hybrid digital cameras with printers attached. Their first one was the SQ10. It was followed by the LiPlay. The most recent camera is the Mini Evo. The design here has also been changing. Again, it has gone from a youthful or teen/pop culture look to a more retro camera look, similar to their x100 camera line. I believe the Fujifilm is testing the water with this kind of camera and seeing just how many units sell. If it does well, I believe they will continue to innovate in this space and offer truly professional grade instant cameras. There is a huge market for it. They are just moving slowly in that direction. Cheers.
I think they do. This is especially true when considering the Instax mini printer costs just a little less. Compared to the Instax mini printer, the Evo gives twice the print resolution when printing from the camera and the same print resolution when printing from the app. So that alone is a better value proposition because you are not loosing anything but getting the Evo. In fact, you are getting the better print resolution and a pretty capable camera for the price. If you were to ask me which Fujifilm Instax camera to get right now, I would suggest the Evo over the other Fujifilm Instax mini cameras. Compared to the Mint TL70, I would say the TL70. The images are better (more detailed, less contrasty, and warmer, overall) because of the lens. I have a video of that coming soon. The TL70 is just harder to learn than the Evo. But it's a quick skill gap to overcome. Cheers.
@@RobertHamm thanks for the reply! I already own the mini link. (I am a fujifilm shooter anyways xt30 and xt4) I shot instant film as a teen I I like the nostalgia of it in general. I own one of the lower end mini 7+ cameras right now as well. I though this one would make a nice addition to my collection and give me the opportunity to work with instant film in a different way. Is it true you can do long exposures with the evo? Again thanks for the reply! I enjoy your videos - definitely subbed.
I don’t think this was really meant for serious photographers. This is fun toy camera that is a printer first camera second. It will allow instant gratification of having instant photos with ability to make copies. Comparing this plastic lens to real glass is like comparing a Porsche against ford escort. I know I am getting it primary to have something physical momento of events
I agree. It was not meant for professional photographers in design. However, in practice, it is a great example of an item that shopped short of having better customer enjoyment by leaving out a better sensor. That's the point with the camera. Everything, from the styling, handling, and looks, is designed to attract a premium audience. They took inspiration from the x100 series which took it's inspiration from film rangefinders. Fujifilm is definitely trying to capture a premium market. Look to another brand, Mint Camera. They make Premium fully manual instant cameras that use Instax film. The cameras are built well, have amazing lenses, look great, and are expensive. Fujifilm could have move a little further in that direction. Customers would have gotten more use with a better sensor, and Fujifilm would have moved closer to that premium market and price.
@@RobertHamm agree. I have a rangefinder myself. Lets hope this inspires Fuji to develop more into this area. I would've gladly spent more for more manual controls and actual glass.
This is what happens when you have marketing and finance people in charge. It’s obvious that Fujifilm is not getting input from photographers. This approach killed Original Polaroid. Thank you for your thoughtful review. I believe you are spot on.
Thanks for your comment. I do think Fujifilm has two different teams working on their cameras, Instax and X-System. Since Instax cameras are starting to go hybrid, it might be helpful for Fujifilm to have their X-System software team help out with the menus. Cheers.
Fuji is a business. Marekting and finance people are ALWAYS in charge. When they are not, you get amazing products for a short time and then the company goes out of business. This is not a camera for photographers. It is a printer with a cheap lens stuck on. For $200. Great review and thanks for the honesty.
Ive been meaning to buy this camera but im still unsure about it. First. Can the battery be replace if its broke? I been hearing it’s a built in battery. Second. Is it a good camera for a first time polaroid user? Third. Do you think instax will release a better version of this camera? Im afraid they’ll make a better version of this by the time i buy this.
You have some good questions. Let me help. Fujifilm seems to be on a yearly update with the analog Instax cameras in the entry level. The mini 8, 9, and 11 series all seem to have an update about onece e dry hear. The pro line of analog Instax cameras cameras, the mini 90, has not seen an update. Other than a complete redesign and addition of manual controls, it's at the peak of it's line. The hybrid cameras, the SQ10, SQ20,, LiPlay, and now the Mini EVO seem to be on a two year release date. It took about 2 years to go from the sq10 to the SQ20. Then it LiPlay has been out a little over a year and it has no update. I think the Evo is the update to the LiPlay. So I figure they won't update the Evo for at least a year. You can not replace the battery. Fujifilm has no battery replacement plan. When the battery dies, you will need to get a new camera or try to Do it yourself. Yes. This is a great camera for a first time instant film shooter. It's very advanced for Instax photography. You will truly enjoy not wasting film. And you won't have to have film in the camera to use it. I hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Cheers.
@@RobertHamm thanks for the help. one last thing though, does the battery usually break after sometime? if it is how long would it take to break? and also, even if it does break, what type of battery is it? i might be able to replace it
Watching this video made me cancel my order (and get back a third of my paycheck) because now I know that even with the experience that this camera offers, I already have other ways to do what this camera advertises as its expertise
I'm glad the video helped you make the right decision for you. Make sure to check out some of my other videos before you commit. You may like the image quality and dual function camera/printer combo the Evo offers. But if you already have an Instax printer, then there may not be much need to pick this up. So save some money. Cheers!
Cheers.
@@RobertHamm I have to agree. Surely it's possible to put a better sensor and processor into these cameras?
It’s a toy, just have fun, the prints are cool for more you have your phone or your full frame
Glad you liked it and have a new member for your museum. Cheers.
I'm happy for you. You'll want a 28mm viewfinder. Good luck!
@@RobertHamm Amazing.. thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your video's. I still have a hard time finding out how to get a black border. I'm just a very beginner in the photography world.
You can get different color borders by buying different color borders films. If you didn't know, fugigilm Instax mini comes in a lot of colors. White is the most common. If you black border film, just buy the black film pack. Same goes for any other color you can think of. Cheers.
Thank you , much appreciated.
Would you recommend this or the instax mini printer? I have my phone for taking pics I wanted to print for journaling.
- i could choose which photo to print (film) which led to unwasted print film (i mean the film here so pricey)
- loveddd the mirror effect
- and correct me if im wrong.. i could saved or backup the countless picture on the SD Card?
Good luck.
@@RobertHamm aww too bad for digital part ! Anyway thanks for the response ^^ I really appreciated it 💯
@@RobertHamm and i should lookin more info for another camera (that good for digital part) other than phone of course
Unfortunately, yes. But a good phone with a wide lens will be good enough for most people.
Adorama haș had them for over a week. Mine arrives tomorrow.
i wanted the evo cause of the fun the filters and lenses it has.... sucks about the paywall cause it would be fun to share with the border ol
If you wanted to do it and can get enough light in the area you need using light sticks/led lights, or other augmented lighting, then here's what I suggest:
Use an Instax mini camera and film.
100 film pack cheapest on Amazon right now: amzn.to/3A1idnV
Check Walmart and best buy. They procematch and sometimes have Instax mini in a red box from Fujifilm directly for less.
Then you'll need a cheap tripod and an instant camera with a self timer
Instax Mini 70: amzn.to/3As3ZOi
The mini 70 I listed is currently the cheapest Instax with self timer on Amazon right now.
Cheers.
@@RobertHamm thank you for all the information this will definitely help I’ve never done you tube before but I figured it out.
It's easy. Just have a lot of light of the area you will be shooting is dark. The film needs a lot of light. Watch my playlist about Instax photography. ruclips.net/p/PL4TP8LykMm38C3x3lXalGZlfe8PTH45SN
I hope DIY perks can modify this. Nice comprehensive review.
Thanks.
Love the review.. one of the best i came across so far.. thank you!
Thanks for saying so.
Idk I just got the mini Evo in the mail today & it feels cheap as hell. Really wish it was made better in quality.
Yeah, I think they would have done a better job with build quality, too. But it's fun and works well. So that's good.
@@RobertHamm Thank you again so much. I really really appreciate it :)
Can you take the photos off the camera from the SD card directly?
Yes.
The sensor is probably why that thing hasnt got manual control of the exposure settings.
A used fujifilm XT2 or XE2 or X100f or XT100... any of them will be great, and used would be even better. My fav eould be the XT2 or X100f.
Cheers.
Do you believe that the capabilities and features match the $200 price?
@@RobertHamm actually, the print resolution is less when printing from the app.
So if you have to pick one, which one are you gonna pick: instax mini liplay or instax mini evo?
I'd pick the Evo every time.
I wonder if the photo look as the same as the instax mini 11
The quality of the print looks almost identical. It would be hard to tell the difference between two images if they were the same.
I also don't like that the battery is not removable...
Yeah, that is a bummer.
Cheers!
Get rid of the fish-eye setting and put colour isolation instead.
Agree
@@RobertHamm ..or even toy cammera effect, better and more suited to the experience Fuji is creating here, I think any case.
I line this camera. I think so long as you keep in mind that this is a toy and not a professional or even prosumer camera it's absolutely wonderful
