Ralfi's Alley - GCI in Blue Flag

- Sometimes you just need to sit down, kick back and let others do the flying for you. So why not help the team with some GCI/AWACS support?
Need Combined Arms DLC for this to work and you sit in the forward commander slot to do this. It's pretty neat! Played on the Blue Flag server (Buddy Spike). Game is DCS World.
Obviously I made some mistakes but for my first time I think I did relatively well.
"He's on my six, going guns"
Never thought I'd get chills from looking at a map with icons and radio.
ED really should make an AWACS module. And it doesn't need to be 'flyable', just interactive internal radar/map displays and communication equipment. Perhaps even multi-crew to distribute the workload.
Wouter d.B. they could still add the 'cockpit' later
Agree completely. Anyone remember the old AWACS mode from DID's Total Air War? Awesome stuff that would work very well in DCS.
Fuck that i'd be great if we had a DCS Level AWACS aircraft.
Wish they could merge Xplane11 as the cockpit view. Then make something for GCI
Nope..... last thing I wanna do on DCS is do what I do IRL.
By the way, there were a few guys who were NOT on comms with us on simple radio which is why I didn't talk to them or didn't task them with anything even though they were in a better position or in the area to help. This is why everyone who plays on blue flag should hop on simple radio, even if you're not going to talk, it's always good to at least listen.
>tfw I come home from my job of controlling military aircraft just to control military aircraft on DCS
Heh, some people enjoy that. I know a few who run our JTAC/ATC/AWACS for our group that basically do one of those for a living. I feel like we are guinea pigs for them and they are just using us for their RL training, however can't complain, it is immersive as fuck if you got a professional doing it right.
Awesome video! As a USN Air Intercept Controller (US Navy version of GCI, employed from the ships) I highly approve! I've always wanted to hop onto a server and do work!
Great video as always. So jealous I have no idea what I'm doing in this sim :(
No apologies needed. The way things are now a days....it's just so much easier. I'm 46 years old and all I ever wanted to do was fly a jet. My problem was my vision was way screwed, so I ended up being a ground pounder in the US Army, which I am TOTALLY proud of. :) Sims are the only way that I can get close to what I love. Thank you for that.
Don't get rid of breathing, Ralfi. That's not healthy!
That was really damn cool, Ralfi. I've never seen this side of DCS gameplay before, and I never realized how fucking huge that map is. Let's see more of this!
It's huge. Going Mach 1 the entire time, it can take like 30 minutes at least to go from one end of the map to the other. And that's pretty much only possible if you'd have unlimited fuel in most aircraft. The cruising speed youd have to fly at in order to be able to return to base would be well under Mach 1. I imagine a round trip cruise would take about 2 hours at least
I remember back when I was playing 1.2.16 on the Open Conflict server, I played as an AWACS guy a few times, guiding some F15 pilots to kill some things. I thought at first it was boring, but then when they started calling me to be the eyes and ears and stuff, it was intense af. It really is fun being AWACS as much as being a pilot.
Wow this is actually really intense and engaging to watch, I vote more of these
Ralfi that was awesome!
Oh and don't worry about your mic so much, it's fine.
this is very interesting, finally I'm starting to understand a little bit what the radio gibberish means
It's incredible how organized they all are. It's Military anarchy based entirely off everyone's individual Competency and it almost always works.
Course its also why it's so hard to get on the radio as a beginner. There's no learning curve, there's a learning BRICK WALL.
I love this. This is what makes the game come together for me.
As a GCI, do you wish for more immersive tools for it?
Obviously.
The more I could do the better. It's pretty raw right now, but there's nothing I can do about that.
Ralfi, talk to the blue flag admins and tell them to install LotATC. Doesn't get more immersive than that for DCS. Dynamic detection systems based on radar coverage/AWACs, radio plugin, ATC module, the ability to draw on the map to create different zones etc. It's great.
They tried. The script fucks with the server
Hopefully Aries will release their GCI module soon unless its gone tits up haven't heard anything about its dev. in awhile.
how about something outside the game? In Arma 3, there are some mods that export data outside the game engine to websites and other shit. Is this possible in DCS?
Holy shit man I don't know what I was watching exactly but it sure didn't look like your first rodeo as an AWACS! (No seriously most of the jargon went right by my head but it was easy enough to see what you meant and you sounded like you did this before)
It's those different layers that makes this incredibly interesting and fun to watch. Seeing those symbols moving around and knowing how it looks on the other end...
ralfi, it always amazes me what great situational awareness that you have. whether you are flying or controlling. been catching your broadcasts for about six months. awesome stuff.
they were so nice and thankful at the end it makes my heart warm
Actually much more interesting than I thought.
10:04 those 2 A10's shooting down an MIrage,nice.
That was fucking amazing. Never thought something like that would be as exciting as it was. :D
Listing to the lingo makes my head spin, would never be able to get into it! :D
I guess this video experiment worked out fine, would love to see you upload more stuff like this. The comms really make this great.
Thanks for watching out for the hawgs, kept us going strong ;)
Surprisingly entertaining and tense!!
Good shit, Ralfi. Having the other guys doing great comms made the video. Maybe one day there should be an ultimate blue flag GCI video mixing footage from you, Line, Colt, etc!
This is awesome! Top quality comms from a perspective outside the cockpit! Keep up the content!
As someone who is working on becoming an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA, this is valuable learning material for me in some ways.
Wyvern is best plane...... much much better than the Falken.....if there was only a mod to put it in this lol
Uhh, negative
This was amazing to watch and listen to. I really need to get more time into DCS and gameplay like this reminds me exactly why.
Even though you aren't flying it's still intense! Would love to see more of these Ralfi
Very nice.. Loved it. Good to see all MP aspects of DCS being shown.
That should be the new blue flag strat, chuck manpads all around the hostile airbases
Great GCI work Ralfi , i had a lot of fun on that session!
(IAF.Tomer)
Didn't think I'd like this but it was interesting. Nice one
imho, GCI role is very similar to dispatch for LEOs or Fire, and if one takes away the shooting (but not the time urgency) it's similar to para transit and ambulance. Awesome radio technique!
Was just looking for some videos from gci perspective, guess its my lucky day.
Loved it Ralfi! Keep the videos coming!!!!
i wonder if you could do this with added gun camera footage from the sorties to see the action as a picture in picture. could be kinda cool to see the interaction.
This was the most exciting thing I've watched..
Fantastic video, Ralfi!
Really loved watching this one, thanks!
Ty Ralf for the vid! Btw GCI means Ground controlled interception?
Dobry film, polecam
Redeye 1-2 here... that was a very good job and a lot of fun! Thanks ralfi!
I checked over the footage while editing. You were totally calling out BRA and calling it BULLS, confused the shit out of me.
Jup, I know. Wasn't my best sortie. I totally know the difference between BRA anf Bulls
Would definitely like to see more of this! Nice job!
Same here!
Helpful feedback: Remove "for" from your BRAA. i.e "130 for 4 miles..." could be read as "130 44 miles". I used to d it as well and its a tricky habit to get out of. Great vid BTW
Great stuff. Enjoyed the vid mate
Gunnie
being GCI is an interesting task, I enjoy doing it on the buddy spike server, normally for the red side mainly because most of my friends fly on SU-27. sadly, usually there are no other GCIs on red side and it can get difficult to split attention to two parts of the map, especially when you have helos to protect on one side and pilots not following instructions or requesting instruction but never providing a callsign and expecting an immediate response, also don't forget the occasional Russian guy.
this was really good
would be good to see you giving out a pre-mission briefing to a team including a2g missions then see the results on AWACS
Hey Ralfi, are you watching Youjo Senki? It's pretty good, I'd recommend it.
Also, this was a fun video to watch. I used to spend a lot of time with my grandparents when I was younger. They were both cops so they had a ton of radio units every where, so I think comms are fun to listen to.
It's just like playing a real-time strategy game!
...i know people that speak air flight terminology during everyday intetactoon, ((I'm egressing left, west into movie parking lot, standing by for better parking position, I'll be feet wet in 3...)) -Great review
Feet wet...Oranges sweet
This is awesome. Quick question though, aren't you supposed to give altitude after "BRA"? I noticed quite a lot of times you were only giving bearing and range.
Sometimes the icons don't stay on long enough for you to click on it and check the altitude. They would blink in and out. But whenever time allowed for it I would click on the icon of the hostile to check the altitude and give them that info.
Aha, makes sense, thanks ralfi!
ralfidude as the Commander of that Show xD Do more of that definitly worth to watch even if i dont Know every com codes(or whatever you Call it -.-). is there a list anywhere or could you make a tutorial for that?
MULTI-SERVICE BREVITY CODES
FM 1-02.1
Would love to see a mash up switching between this and then the pilots perspective. PS what's BRA and bulls?
BEARING-RANGE-ALTITUDE from you to whatever it is you're pointing out
vs
an arbitrary location on the map designated by the bullseye marker where you reference from bullseye to the thing you're pointing out.
Awesome, thanks. Love the vids. Keep it up!
@@ralfidude or BRAA that is Bearing-Range-Altutude-Aspect. Aspect being the direction the aircraft is heading, as in, hot, cold, flanking left or right or beam left or right.
holly shit i want to do this and just this all the time. This is awesome.
Jesus that manpads drop is incredible. Out of interest how would one go about deploying units on Blue Flag, and would I need the Gazelle or would the Huey and/or Mi-8 suffice?
I think any chopper unit is able to drop stuff off anywhere they want. There should be a tutorial online somewhere on youtube.
Thanks, appreciate it. For the past few days I've been getting back into DCS for the first time since 1.5 and earlier, my god how things have changed. Anyway appreciate the reply, thanks for the content, and I might end up another tally on the side of your plane soon.
Very informative. Thanks.
This inspired me to learn a few more odds and ends, practice and bring my game face! GCI - Toolbandit, lol
awsome Ralfi
wow, pure awesomeness
Holy shit you did a fantastic job.
Was this an event on the 104th? I'd be keen to fly a Blue Flag!
Blue Flag is it's own server www.buddyspike.net/blueflag
How do you get to play GCI? I heard you need the combined arms dlc? I'm looking to pick up this role.
That was facinating
That was pretty fucking awesome.
Yaay. This is great.
The mic thingy just adds realism ;-)
How popular is the Viggen in Blue Flag ?
hi are you using combined arms here for GCI? noticed it was all BRAA as well can you use Bullseye?
Yes on combined arms. Yes you can use bulls but it's generally more complicated to use that. Most calls are under 40nm so using BRA is soooo much easier and convenient for the pilots. Takes all of 2 seconds to understand where to go, instead of having to open the map and trying to figure out where the bulls call is relative to them. Though it certainly has it's uses of course.
Hey, ralfi, have you heard of Nikolay Anisimov? I just thought you'd like some of his tunes if you wanted some Russian music to edit over Sukhois or MiG's in DCS some time. "The Rooks Have Arrived" is a good track to start on if you're looking into his music.
Very similar to the SoW-setup in Cliffs of Dover. Am dead keen to get invovled in BlueFlag...
New ralfi video, yay !
Nice vid! Btw why the hostile are disappearing time to time , seems they are not flying low aren’t they?
Mountains/terrain
@@ralfidude understood, thanks for replying. Another question as I would like to try it, I must have Combined arms right? If I buy this module and go straight on BF servers can I jump right away as GCI or it MUST be an E3 or IL78 in the air ( flown by AI ). Does they have to drop crane with EWS radar around the map to have a better coverage or it doesn't matter?
Did you have a look at LotATC yet?
Screw MAGIC, DARKSTAR Biatch! :-)
what voicechat program are you using?
Simple Radio
Just bought the viggen recently and still trying to get the grips of it
but i saw there were some ships....are they actually a worthwhile target or just there for decoration?
I don't think anyone was stupid enough to go and see. But they aren't part of any vital mission to progress. My guess would be that it's a somewhat inaccessible SAM wall created to avoid players from trying to hit bases from that side, just like there are SAM wall defenses placed near main airfields to protect players from base rape.
just took a closer look and there is also a admiral kuznetsov but as it is all the way to the west it will probably only get important when they are pushed back heavily.
I really should hop back onto to blueflag, been ages since the last time, and be the stupid one to try out if you can destroy their fuel bunkers with a sneaky low altitude viggen attack after you get rid of their ships. Probably won't work if they pay attention but at least it will be fun!
I'm flying the Viggen in BlueFlag for a while now and trying to do exactly that: Sneaky low altitude attacks on enemy airfields. My favorite target so far is Gudauta, because you can ingress from NW at wavetop height, and pull up off the coast to toss the bombs on the airfield, which is just at the coast and at 20m ASL, so you can dive down to sea level immediatly after the bombs are gone. Good fun!The ships have no impact on the campaign so far, but the red side can launch Su-33 from their carrier.
will try that as well as soon as i got some more practice and can do things without cheatsheats :D
but they are probably only launching aircraft from there when they pushed back right?
but the viggen will shine in its anti ship role when there is an afm for the su-33 and the hornet ist released :D
That was fun, thanks
Thank you this!
not sure how DCS works but they need B/E reference points and more standardized comm. it also needs data displayed over cursor. looking at top of screen will drain SA
I Just started with dcs series what should I download at the beggining dcs world 2.0
dcs 1.5
dcs world 1.5 open beta ?
I almost suggested you to do this not long ago. drunk?/angry GCI vid.
Do you guys know any good Com-Tutorials out there ?
Hey Ralfi, if you decide to do GCI again, change your editor from NATO to Russian. It'll give you icons of planes so you can see their aspect. This is what allows me to do things like "check your 8 oclock" while in close combat because I can see your current aspect against the hostile. But nice to see I'm not the only one who GCIs. :)
the only thing missing was bogey headings so you had to update more often :D other than that it was professional and efficient! :D WD
From experience in RED FLAG ops in BMS, that information goes over peoples heads and they will ask for a repeat bogey dope anyway, plus you want to minimize information to keep it more simple especially on blue flag where people may not be too terribly familiar with everything.
do you remember that brief period of time, when Tunguskas could shoot down Mavs ? I remember
Shadow lel
wehich radio tool do u use for the analg-sound..?
[Heavy breathing]
You made that look easy
Nah, it's fine once you learn the terminology.
YESSS
Did i get teamkilled by an a-10 over gudauta?
I don't know, did you?
ralfidude you did a cut in the video right when i got shot down, so i cant see where the missile came from.
Are enemies always visible on this map or is it possible for them to "stay under the radar"?
If they were always visible then they wouldn't be popping in and out like that. They only show up when one of our radars picks them up.
didn't notice the popping in and out, didn't really watch the whole vid. Cool game
its kinda like playing a voice controlled RTS :D
awesome !! i can tell you this is not far from real thing ;) how to participate as a gci ?
You need combined arms, and then join the appropriate slot at the bottom where you'll be the GCI for your team. Some servers might not require you to have combined arms, it depends where you go.
I like very much
yall should make an SLS about GCI-ing
sls?
sim learning Sunday. colt did those from time to time
If You are recording with OBS set noise gate and noise cancalation. I set mine so i can cough a bit and it wont record :)
It's never been this professional when I play blue flag. Radio is a cluster fuck the majority of the time bc usually ppl refuse to setup "whisper groups" in Teamspeak. Then again I haven't played DCS in awhile. Been on a BMS spree the last 6 months or so.
Wish DCS would implement a multiplayer radio system built in like in BMS.
thats what simple radio is.
ralfidude
Ah.
Last I played DCS it was relatively new so I haven't tried it yet.
I tried "Leavu" (or however it's spelled) once when flying with RVE in their server. Didn't like having to fly in windowed mode so I quit trying little apps.
what radio mod do you use?
This one: github.com/ciribob/DCS-SimpleRadioStandalone/releases/latest All the info is there if you follow the links. A few servers are running it including BlueFlag and OpenConflict. Enjoy! :)
I'd love to get in on the action with Blue Flag
But I can't connect to the bloody server :(
RPM No no.
As in I can't connect at all. I time out.
Which is weird because I can play on the 104th and other us servers just fine. I'm in Australia, maybe they have a ping cap.
My connection is stable with no packet loss and next to no jitter, so I don't know.
Thanks anyway dude.
