The reasons why McGillis and Tekkadan lost in the end are the following. 1) Gaelio revealing his identity to McGillis back in Mars, was done in purpose. McGillis knew he was treading on thin ice, and at any moments notice his crimes from season 1 could be revealed, so he started acting hastily, without thinking twice as he did before. 2) The Arianhrod is the biggest fleet Gjallarhorn possesses. Going against them is technically suicide. Even if the shows portrayal of the Gjallarhorn pilots and their Grazes' is lackluster, the Arianhrod fleet employs elite pilots (except Iok). 3) Bael was a strong machine, but its equipment was inferior to the Kimaris Vidar, which was overhauled with the newest technology. You have to understand, that the first Gundam frames did not possess as much innovative weaponry as the ones built later. 4) Orga was all over his head. After Biscuit's death, almost every decision he took turned out to be bad. It did not help that he was surrounded by people who did not object him at any point. 5) Rustal was a battle proven commander, one of the few in Gjallarhorn with the experience to lead. He serves as a parallel to Orga, dressed in a similar manner (jacket over formal suit), and commanding troops from behind. Yet Rustal not only has more experience, but he is also more cunning, able to foresee his enemies movements, and manipulate the flow of battle to his advantage. (He orchestrated the Dort colonies uprising to go according to him, and later he rescued a critically injured Gaelio, proving he had already knew that something was going on with McGillis before season 2 even begun.) 6) Everyone was willing to turn their backs on McGillis and Tekkadan. Nobliss colliding with Rustal, Teiwaz who where a shield for Tekkadan against external threats, the Seven Stars who defied Gjallarhorn's traditions by staying neutral, and later siding with Rustal. It is as Julietta said after learning of Orga's death, that every adult was only interested in using them until they had nothing more to take from them.
Leader Rustal... I know he's good leader, however, in real life, he has other "important" things there. Including Golan Mossa whom fought Akihiro Altland. Agreed, plus bael is in its original form, kimaris vidar is close to its original form, so from a mobile suit stand point, pretty even. With the pilot's in the equation, bael should be on top, but as you said mcgillis underestimated
The reason why Mcgillis lost here is because he was far too infatuated to the legend of Gundam Bael. To clarify, think of Bael like Excalibur, and the Sword in the Stone. Bascially, the ancient customs of Gjallahorn said that whoever revived Bael or 'pulled the sword from the stone' is the true king/leader of Gjallahorn. Basically, Mcgillis thought that when he reactivated Bael, everyone would bow down to him because of that legend/belief on that basis alone, not even having the most military force in Gjallahorn. However, really Bael is just another sword and a powerful symbol, so basically everyone else who was a rational thinker like Rustal just decided not to adhere to legend/customs and mobilized his far superior force in the Elite Arianhod Fleet to defeat Mcgillis and strike down what everyone saw as a usurper by force. The other seven stars/lord just did the same and just declared neutrality. So while Mcgillis certainly was cunning, as Rustal said. He really was still a child obsessed with Bael, who never really grew up.
To be fair, McGillis is truly should have lost. If they win, it's only matter of time until Gjallarhorn ruler of earth clash with Tekkadan as ruler of Mars. Bael vs Barbatos would be lit, but the cost is more people will die.
