Broken OMRON BF508 digital scales - Can I fix it?

- Hello and welcome to my 2nd can I fix youtube video. Today I will be looking at the OMRON BF508 body composition monitor with a faulty LCD display.
Can I fix it? Watch and find out :)

My scales had been in storage for 2 years while we were searching for a new house. They demonstrated this fault and, before I junked them, I looked at this. After two minutes with my wife's Dyson hair dryer, It worked perfectly! I couldn't believe it could have been such a simple fix. Well done Shaun
Brilliant - i was about to throw away or send for repair my Omron BF400 - 5 minutes with a screwdriver and hairdryer - hey presto it's back working. Thanks Shaun !

Thanks Shaun! I almost gave up trying to find a solution to fix our digital scale and then came across your vid. I don't have a hot air gun like you have, but carefully used my wife's hairdryer and woohoo, it worked and now we have a functioning LCD again. Winner!

Due to similar LCD issues, I had already opened my BF511 once and had tried to give some pressure with a small spatula to the ribbon cable. I did have the right hunch where the problem would be. However just physical pressing the ribbon did nothing. Of course I should've first checked youtube for tips. After giving some heat treatment with a heat gun together with some pressure, I could identify the bad contact in the ribbon. And after a few delicate heat rounds, I could get the display back fully. Thanks for the enormously helpful tip, you saved one more scale today :)

I used a hair blower on low power; didn’t work first but then kept blowing and wiping the contacts while the screen was on. The digits started appearing at some point and remained stable.

This is a known defect in Omron scales (funny tidbit: auto-corrects Omron to Moron). It looks like they still sell the same defective scales.

I have a similar scale with a ribbon like that, I first tried to remove the ribbon, wipe down the contacts, then tape it back together; it worked at first but eventually the tape couldn't hold down the ribbon.
Then I tried using the soldering gun another video suggested, but it messed up the tape a bit.
Tried the hot air method but my air was too hot.
Turns out the LCD still worked after being mutilated by my actions, but it needed to be overlapped and held down with pressure. My current solution I have it taped down, overlapped, then I lodged a piece of felt from a beverage koozie in between the ribbon and the case and it seems to be holding up with all the numbers displayed.
I think if I started with the heat method before removing the contacts from the circuit board I may have had better results.
Any advice on replacing a broken screen?
thanks Shaun for you very informative video. I have an Omron HBF-516B, when I turn it on it goes to basic config then goes to CAL and then shows "err" and then shuts down. It was stored for a long time with the batteries installed before I got it. ¿What could it be? Please HELP... thanks 😟😀
I had the same issue with a 516 Omron that was stored for many years - follow Shaun’s video exactly and it worked for me. I used a heat gun but some have mentioned a hair dryer works too
Excuse me Shaun, I have an Onrom HBF-514. My sister in law applies sanitizer in the scale after every patient she attends, but It seems now that there's a stain moisture and the buttons are not working (but the scale does turn on). She can't use it anymore because she need to set it but the buttons don't respond. Is there anyway to fix it? Sorry for the bad english.

By the sounds of it, if water or moisture has made it into the scales then there is a good chance that it will damage the circuit board underneath. Without seeing it for myself i cannot say for sure what is wrong, but any time water or moisture makes it inside then things tend to fail.. you would need to open it up, inspect it, if you are lucky, you may get it working again with a good clean (using isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush)... if you try, let me know how it goes :)

Thanks for the video! My BF511 had similar problems, but was in a far worse condition with almost all of the display nonreactive. As per your example I applied heat to the connection, and stroked the connection with a cotton swab (to "make it stick", I don't know what I'm doing :D ). After almost 40 minutes of heating and stroking I had a fully functioning LCD.
But IT seems mine was not a lasting fix, 12 hours later some of the numbers are already fading.
Would you or anyone have further suggestions I could try? Thanks!
Thank you for your comment and well done on getting it working. Sounds like your adhesive doesn't want to hold it any more. I will have a look around and see if anyone has any suggestions for you.

You can use a hair dryer, just make sure u don't do it too close, you are just aiming to warm up the ribbon join gently :)
