How to shorten VW Beetle chassis properly - Birth of the Renobug Part 4

  • It's Wifey Wednesday! Time to do some work on the Renault/VW Beetle project. In this round, we shorten the VW Beetle floor pan so the wheelbase will suit our 1959 Renault body. We remove sections of the tunnel in two places and do proper measurement checks to ensure the suspension geometry is square and parallel. Before finally welding the pieces together, we add doubler plates for additional strength and also shorten the emergency brake tubes as well as clutch and accelerator tubes.

There's one minor thing he does that shows his skill. Before welding, he sands off all the paint down to bright metal. Most welders I see always claim that the weld will "burn through" the paint or rust. In reality, the paint and rust contaminates the weld, making a weak joint.
