Watching you dive into Canadian culture and really attempt to understand, and perhaps to a certain degree appreciate the country of Canada has been a beautiful thing to witness. My hat is off to you Sir! Canadians love you!
It really is what sets his channel apart from the other "American reacts to Canadian xyx" type channels out there. It's the genuine interest, and the content dives much deeper than the other channels that are simply doing it for their own popularity. I know John wants the channel to grow, but for the right reasons, not because he's trying get himself popular.
Watched the whole 4 part series yesterday. A tear jerker for sure if you're a fan. Even surprised at how honest and forthright they were about the conflicts that arose and how tough it was to get past them. The real surprise for me was a Downie family tragedy that happened early on in the band's career that I knew would probably get addressed as it led to one of their greatest heartfelt songs, Fiddler's Green. (I won;t spoil it for those still going to watch) I just didn't expect the family, especially the one directly involved to speak about it so honestly. They did not owe us, sharing the details of their life altering loss but because it was Mike Downie behind the camera, I'm sure that made the trust level safe for them, but my lord did it get heavy and had me pretty weepy. Plus the last hour where it gets to the end of Gord's all too short life, again the family shared way more than they owed us. For that I'm grateful, and feel undeserving of such openness as a fan.
I'm writing this from Kingston Ontario, where in my youth, I spent many an evening listening to The Hip at our college pub and in local bars. I'm so happy that Canada came to love this band as much as we did, and it's really great to see others react so positively. I sobbed all the way through all four episodes of "No Dress Rehearsal" and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
I really truly hope you watch it. Yes, I had a good snot and bawl in the final episode but on the flip side, I think Mike Downie did a brilliant job of sharing the story of the band and focussed on each member's own version/perspective on the history. He also gave each member equal screen time and let them tell their own story of what it was like during Gord's final years. That's a rare find in a documentary about a band so deeply loved. Most are just focussed on the lost member and loosely reference the remaining members. This one is different. I was also pleasantly surprised to see the number of Canadian actors and musicians who shared their stories and perspectives on why they had such a strong impact on Canadians. I think as an American fan, you will really appreciate the insights offered and maybe see why we Canadians embrace (and go a little nutty LOL) over our greatest exports - the artists, musicians and actors who carry our stories and attempt to share them with the world. BTW, don't forget Rush... they (and others before them) put us on the map and opened the door for bands like the hip. 🙂 Rush to me, always felt like I was listening to musical genius that was untouchable. I had such respect for their musicianship and loved their albums but knew I was listening to rock royalty. Whereas the Hip was just as musically talented but their lyrics and music was more like listening to yer buddies garage band. You could picture yourself jammin with them while talking CDN history. Both bands deserve equal praise and love from Canada; they just made their mark differently.
Great video John Another video about the Tragically hip you should watch is their last concert song performance where they perform Ahead by a century which is the last song they do as a band before Gord Passes away. Tragically hip a Canadian Gem and Gord what a good man he was showing that Canadians need to accept the mistakes this country did to Indigenous people and that we should reconcile with them and apologize. We must reconcile with the indigenous people for Gord ❤️🪶 🇨🇦.
I binge watched this the other day and I bawled like a baby. I think you will really like it. The documentary will definitely show you why we loved them and all the “feels “ we were going thru after Gords diagnosis , his last tour and his death. Was an emotional rollercoaster for me. Will love to hear your reaction.
It is going to be such a great watch! Please do your reactions on No Dress Rehearsal as I know you will have the audience for it! I saw the Hip here in Halifax back in 1992. Even though I went alone, I was never really alone among other Hip fans!😊😎🎶
I went from seeing them in the 80s at the forum at Ontario place as a teenager,to being at the show in Vancouver on the final tour and I was at the movie premiere at the TIFF thanks to my brother who is a musician who knew The Hip well and man did I go through a lot of Kleenex. When your heroes die young…it’s like part of your youth dies and really brings about the thoughts that life is so fun short ❤❤
I watched the series last night and it’s excellent. I think you will really enjoy it. Would love to see your reaction to it. Even as a long-time fan, I learned a lot.
Saw The Hip live at my University's Pub in the early 80's, they were awesome. Gord put so much passion into the lyrics. Love that you are a fan, great video.
Hi John favourite band of all times. There will never be another voice like Gord’s, truly unique. Thank you for your honest reaction to the band. Enjoyed watching! Enjoy your weekend 🫶
Yes, please react to the series! And you are correct, that was the great George Mark Paul Stroumboulopoulos (not to be confused with the American news anchor George Stephanopoulos)! He started his career as a V.J. at Muchmusic, our equivalent to MTV.
Part One sure brought back memories, going to university in Kingston in the 1980s revisiting some of the old stomping grounds mentioned in this doc. The Hip was the town bar band, jamming and playing wherever they could. John we'd all like to hear your thoughts on this unique part of Canadian identity.
Made it through the first 2 episodes amazing, love the live on stage shots of the band, great studio band but a band best enjoyed live. more please John glad you are back.
I agree emotions were still very raw when "Long Time Running" came out, but in alot of ways, its still very raw, I'm not sure enough time will close that wound here in 🇨🇦 Much like Terry Fox, Canadians will still feel it for generations, we don't forget our heros so easily.
through the 80's my fav band was ZZ Top and I am Canadian. When the Hip came out in Canada in the late 80's they became my new favorite band while ZZ Top remained my all time old favorite band, and somewhere along the way by the mid 90's I had to admit that the Hip took 1st place for me. and was a die hard fan of ZZ top in that I have a full back tattoo from ZZ Top tribal artwork The Hip was a breath of fresh air after being subjected to the lame glamrock hair bands of the 80's.
Hello John and Welcome Back. I personally would like to see your reaction to the other parts of the documentary. If you are interested, after the documentary was aired at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) the crowd sang some Hip songs outside of the theatre. That might be an interesting inclusion. An idea for you would be to compare some prominent Canadian rock bands and how they influenced the music world. Perhaps a compare and contrast of The Tragically Hip, The Band, Bachman Turner Overdrive (BTO) and The Guess Who. Another idea would be for you to investigate "The Group of Seven". A group of Canadian painters and how they impacted and influenced the art world. Two of the more infamous painters were Emily Harris and Tom Thomson. I would personally love for you to watch and react to the entire 100 Heritage Minutes. Perhaps 3 "Minutes" per episode?
I'd love to hear more of reactions to this. Great video. You've done some great reaction videos to the hip but I understand a reaction to first hearing them and a reaction while having heard them before and being a fan is not the same and I can agree with your reasoning. I'd also suggest some reactions to RUSH would be great. They are also a great Canadian group that is extremely talented and their drummer Neil Peart was phenomenal. If you haven't heard Temple of Syrx and Xanadu I highly recommend you listen to these too.
I’ve been a Rush fan ever since I was a young kid and my big brother brought home the concert album Exit Stage Left. They are one of my top 5 all time. Neil Peart and Keith Moon are the reasons I learned to play drums. Wish I could play like them, especially the Professor.
I absolutely would love to see your reaction to the doc series! I have had the privilege of seeing the Hip about 12 times, including once in Rochester, NY around 1995.
Wow thanks for this reaction. I really enjoy your videos. You might consider reacting to some of your favorite songs and maybe just speak about why you like the song and how it makes you feel You obviously appreciate the music and that means a lot
I just finished it! It kind of seemed from the trailer it was going to mainly focus on that last tour probably with some flashbacks, I’m glad it wasn’t that and really focused on their entire career and lives as a whole. I am Canadian but was also a little young so by the time I was at the age of getting into music they were already 5 albums deep and I heard them so much on the radio I think it was a number of years before I truly understood they were uniquely Canadian it just seemed as though they were one of the biggest bands in the world to us, so I never seen the climb of the band, as to me they were just that band with 15 songs on the radio. So I’m glad it really goes in depth on all of that time even as a fan!
I would love a reaction to this whole thing in parts of course 😊 I still tear up for certain songs. Gord you are truly missed and loved 😢❤ That trailer made me cry. I know I won't make it through without being a blubbering fool 😅
This docuseries is well worth reacting to! Please do!

Fantastic video thanks so much. The Hip is truly Canadiana.

Adding my vote for reactions!! Personally I bawled like a baby all weekend.

I gotta binge all the episodes asap!!
Yes, please. Would love to see your reactions to what obviously promises to be an epic documentary. Thank you.
doc was so good bawled my eyes out the hip truly a Canadian treasure
if you are truly honored I hope you spell it "honoured"!
I have learned to appreciate both versions. Typically Canadian I guess, but I know what you mean.
Ah, fair play. 😁. I admit that I am so used to seeing the spelling differences I don’t really even notice anymore.
Nice 1😂❤🇨🇦
LOL
I can't wait to watch it and I would love to see your reaction as well, John!

Hi John - yes, please do a reaction. We should share this together.
Just watch it Bro 👍🏼🇨🇦✌🏼
New to your channel. But yes yes yes lol
You are Canada because you care. Canadian is not what you think.
Pls do a reaction ..
Amazing documentary other than having to cringe when Trudeau talks.
Great Canadian band off stage but Live Gord was an alcoholic and would get really drunk on stage mess up the lyrics worst band to ever see live
I get that. I’ve been disappointed with some live performances from some of my favorite bands.
@@johnf-americanreacts1287 best 4 pure Canadian bands are 4 Stopping Tom 3 The Tragicaly Hip 2 The Trews 1 RUSH
Meh. They’re very overrated.
Shout out from Medicine Hat, AB
Seriously?! The Tragically Hip is a third rate bar band, at best!! They're only okay! Gord Downie wasn't that special.
