Churchill Manitoba - It Truly Is the "Polar Bear Capital of the World".
Join me for a deep dive reaction to a great video by Canadian channel, Downie Live, on the wonders of the ideal migratory point of convergence for polar bears along the first free point on Hudson Bay. This allows the bears a jump start on their hunting season on the frozen Hudson Bay. I'm hoping to learn a little something and contribute my thoughts and impressions in relation to this Canadian wonder.

    through the 80's my fav band was ZZ Top and I am Canadian. When the Hip came out in Canada in the late 80's they became my new favorite band while ZZ Top remained my all time old favorite band, and somewhere along the way by the mid 90's I had to admit that the Hip took 1st place for me. and was a die hard fan of ZZ top in that I have a full back tattoo from ZZ Top tribal artwork The Hip was a breath of fresh air after being subjected to the lame glamrock hair bands of the 80's.

    Hi John, just catching up on your vids, I hold US and Canadian citizen ship,this would not happen in any other Country I can tell you that much.Most Canadians grow up listening to the Star and Stripes National anthem just by growing up at the ice hockey games.Canadians are on skates at 4 or 5 years old, so they here it a lot.Oh Canada was written by an American which is crazy.The war of 1812, 55% of Canada was American born(Loyalists) so we are really children of a common mother, I enjoy the American dollar and I love Canadian free health care. Thank you for the video.

    Next lesson, French Canadian slang? Needed for the class: 1- The Anglo guide to survival in Québec (Collaboration edited by Josh Freed & Jon Kalina w/illustrations by Aislin. Eden Press, 1983.) Extremely funny. There must be a copy lying around somewhere on the Internet. 2- French Canajan, eh? (Mark M. Orkin, illustrated by Isaac Bickerstaff. Lester and Orpin Limited, 1975.) Although the names for a case of 12 or 24 beers are in French (caisse de 12, caisse de 24), in Quebec the recognized name for 6 is ''un six-pack.'' Go figure...

    Man, your knowledge of canadiana would've been left on the cutting floor. Too goodl! 😄 Still... ''Lucien Bonhomme'' = Lucien Bouchard (ex-Premier of Quebec) + Bonhomme Carnaval (mascot of the Quebec-City winter carnival that looks like a snowman on mushrooms.) A political statement in itself that few can grasp. And although ''Bonhomme'' IS a real last name, it can also mean ''geezer.'' In the early 90's there was another news comedy show from Montreal which had a recurring bit where they put a guy in a Bonhomme Carnaval suit and had people on the street vent their anger and frustrations about new taxes or bad policies by klonking him over the head with a frying pan. It was hysterically funny. As the bit became more popular it got to the point where people bent the pan or broke the handle, which made the whole thing even more hilarious. One time they had a head made that looked like Jean Chrétien (then Canadian Premier), crooked jaw and voice included. Unfortunately they had to stop doing that bit because people started showing-up at the Carnaval with frying pans, attacking the real Bonhomme at any given time. By then everybody peed their pants laughing. Can you only imagine the sound it must have made inside that mascot costume? Which by the way was not made to sustain that kind of punishment and more than a few mascot heads where cracked open in the process. Hence, the end of the bit. The show was first called ''Taquinons la planète'' (Teasing the planet), became ''Les bleus poudre'' (The powder blues) and changed to ''100 limites'' (play on word sounding like ''sans limites'': No limits.) The guy imitating Prime Minister Chrétien (Pierre Brassard) was so good at it that he later called and spoke with pope John-Paul II as a prank for a radio show...And of course he got kicked in the balls by former PM Pierre-Elliot Trudeau (Justin's father) while doing his journalist Raymond Beaudoin character. That one's a classic. PS - Are you familiar with Canadian sketch comedy shows Bizarre (1980-86) and The kids in the hall (1989-94)?

    No worries,the Canadian anthem has been changed 3 times since I’ve been alive. I don’t know or like the latest version. I can’t sing it. Several of our rock stars have tried to sing it and screwed up as well. Bryan Adam’s being one, can’t remember the other one. Burton Cummings sang it the old way when the Grand Opening of BC Place occurred in Vancouver. He got a standing ovation!! I can sing the American anthem.😂

      @@NancyScrivens I like touque. It’s cute, and I don’t mean that in a condescending way. I really like it and I use it now. My fellow yanks never k ie what I’m saying and I think that’s funny too. When I was growing up in downstate NY, we called it a scull cap or ski cap or ski hat. Beanie was more like what the little kids wore in the little rascals with the propeller on top.

    • @Vrakom
      @Vrakom 2 дня назад

      @@johnf-americanreacts1287 Actually it is ''tuque'' (not pronounced too-), a French Canadian word. French (France) dictionaries refer to it as a canadianism, maybe a derivative of ''toque'' 😉(pronounced ''tok''); French for a beanie-like hat from the 15th century. No propeller.

But this is Detroit so would have easily picked up Canadian stations on their TV and local radios. NOW, if this had happened in Texas, or Florida, or Carolina.... Then I would have been totally impressed. As for Canadians know the US Anthem, we here it before any MLB, NASCAR, events and many others it we fallow sports at all.

It's a crime that he hasn't been enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame, considering some of the people they have enshrined. Henderson had a pretty good career and when you add his heroics of this series, it's a damn shame!!! Ty John…for participating in the Terry Fox run and inspiring your family as well.Terry Fox is probably the most loved Canadian hero, here and abroad…what more can you say about someone who died so unselfishly for a good cause…running a marathon every day on one leg trying to cross the second biggest country in the world. He cried in Thunder Bay, not from pain but from what he thought was a promise he didn’t keep to Cancer awareness…laying on a hospital gurney knowing his cancer had returned…the hills, the heat, the bugs, rain or snow were no obstacle he didn’t overcome, but he fell down in Thunder Bay, exhausted,sick and heartbroken…is their any better definition of a hero?

    It was really Team NHL because Bobby Hull & Gordie Howe (among others) were not allowed to play for Team Canada because they were part of the WHA - also Bobby Orr (the best player in the world) didn't play due to injury - put just those three in the line-up and it would have been a different story - also a factor is that the players used training camp to get into shape and thought the series was going to be an exhibition and a cakewalk - being not in shape until they got their legs later in the series was also a factor.

The highway of heroes, oh how I wish we weren’t known for that, meaning all our soldiers return home. I’m not sure who started it, god bless them, it it fills my heart with pride and my eyes with tears. Conflict never solves anything, most often the one with the biggest stick wins, regardless if they are villains or heroes and it’s always the soldier that pays the price.

    This song takes you from the couch to a horrible day in the middle of the cold cruel and beautiful Lake Superior…Gordon told the story, he didn’t focus on or try to perform a vocal masterpiece, although it was exceptional as well…he wanted the audience to listen to the story, feel what those poor sailers felt and its consequences to them, their community and family. The instrumental accompaniment was brilliant, starting slowly and simple building stronger like the storm itself…. storytelling in its finest form.
