Seriously, that is a GREAT line. Drinker totally should have used that in his video. I re-watch this every 5 years or so. Think its time for another rewatch.

This movie is what Black Widow COULD’VE been! Between this and cutthroat island, modern Hollywood would do well to study how woman empowerment is done properly. A fantastic film! I’m so glad to know the Drinker likes these movies!

I watched this movie countless times growing up and you're absolutely right about Charlie not being recognized among the pantheon of awesome female action heroes. She definitely deserves a spot!
I worked in a video store when this came out on VHS and it was ALWAYS my go-to recommendation when customers wanted something good to rent. It never failed, every single time when they would return in the next day they had nothing but absolute praise for it and even thanked me for my recommendation.

This movie has a unique place in my memories.
I was working as the Chef in a small pub in my home town when the production of this movie began. I'd read an article in a major newspaper outlining how Renny Harlin was having troubles finding a bridge location that he could also blow up for an upcoming movie. There was a nice profile picture of Renny alongside it. I didn't really know who he was at the time. All I did back then was work, drink, and play guitar with my band.
Fast-forward a few weeks, and we get this table of 10 -12 big spenders in the pub ordering two of everything off the menu, spreading it out Tapas style. When things slowed down, I took a break in the pub to work on some paperwork and there was Renny Harlin, at the head of the big spending table playing host. I recognized him right away, and thought it was rather strange that he was in our quiet, out-of-the-way town in Ontario, Canada.
A few months later, I'm working a Tuesday night, it's dark outside when suddenly our windows light up like it's the middle of the day. The backyard beyond the fence behind us had all these super bright lights everywhere, and we had no idea what was happening. Later that night, a film crew came in for drinks and food. It turns out they were filming the tree house, and some of the house scenes for The Long Kiss Goodnight on the property behind our pub.
The crew became regulars in the pub for about two weeks, and they were really cool to chat with, talking about other production stories and such. During this time, an assistant to someone from the film set ordered a steak dinner from us with explicit instructions about how it should be cooked. The server pressed to know who the dinner was meant for, but the assistant wouldn't say. I like to think it was Geena Davis ordering a rare steak with extra mushrooms, but truthfully, it could have been for anyone.
Anyway, I'll go away now. Peace.
This is actually one of my favorite 90s action movies. I just love how the kid feeds the “life is pain“ line back to her mom in the end, and it’s what gets her going for one final struggle. Talk about setup and payoff! It is one of the movie quotes that has stuck with me over the years.
I’ve had to stop myself from using this exact oneliner with my own kids as they grew up.
Still an excellent life philosophy though, best taught to every child.
I thought I was the only person who loved this movie. Glad to see the drinker bringing it up for people to appreciate. It's been in my list of favorites for years.

Davis's character genuinely took a beating in the movie. When I watched this back in the day NO ONE was preaching any type of messaging or bashing anyone or any gender... it was a BELIEVABLE, well acted, kick ass action movie with fantastic actors with great chemistry. Breath of fresh air compared to today. BRING back the 90's !!!!!!!

Bottom Line: Hollywood KNOWS the formula that WORKS, they just chose a different path. A path of division, hatred, and meaningless ideology that does NOTHING to advance imagination, the human condition, and creative spirit.
This is what the equality message should be. That a woman can absolutely be trained do the same as a man can. It's a far tougher task to write a female character that maintains femininity while doing so, but that's the skill of the production behind a movie, to have it all make sense and not break immersion.
Instead of the last decade of increasingly retarded things that are written as foundations of the various female power fantasies.
Take for example baiting and self control. Heroes are often baited to react by a bad guy, for all kinds of things, family, past defeats, everything. The nastier the hook, the bigger the challenge. The display of strength is to not take the bait, even when their powers are such they could easily mangle and teach the baddie a lesson.
Then you got the self righteous anger when a female hero gets catcalled or asked to smile more. They take the bait and bash the toxic man or steal his stuff or whatever to make a statement. But it's a display of vindictiveness, emotional weakness, a lack of self control. Very much not heroic traits.

She is THE toughest woman in action history. Jolie's fun to watch, Johansson is exciting, sure, but Davis is the ultimate in toughness.
No decade lasts forever. The 2000s aren’t that bad.
This film comes to mind every year when they act like the latest female agent/assassin movie is a groundbreaking event and the first of its kind

God I loved that movie! It really was so well written; the pithy dialog chugs along. Both main actors were at their absolute peak. It was SLJ before he became "too bad ass". Not perfect, very 90s but fun and action and NO lectures? I miss that so damn much!

I love Gina Davis, and loved her in "Cutthroat Island" as well. Both are worth keeping in your movie collection.

I loved A League of Their Own until Dottie does what she does for the love of her sister. I disliked the whinging much-less-talented sister all the way though the film and even though I understood why Geena's character did what she did, it killed the film for me. Proving I can hold a grudge for England, I've never watched it again - 30 years and counting!
i LOVE Beetlejuice as you can tell, but that movie needs like a 20minute trim, it takes too long for the movie to start

I remember two scenes from this fun movie:
1. Geena Davis opening up her bathrobe to shock Jackson with a full frontal so she could rip a bandage off him that he was too much of a wuss to do himself.
2. Geena Davis chopping vegetables and throwing the knife, pinning a tomato to the wall.
Tbf, Jacksons character was an ill prepared hack pi which made Davis' switch jokes 😂👍

I love this film, and it is hugely rewatchable. Jackson is at his wisecracking peak in this movie and Geena Davis is extremely dirty when Charlie appears. A great movie from a better era.

Yes! This was one of my favorite movies when young, along with Leon, Childs Play, RoboCop, Beetlejuice and Earth Girls Are Easy.
Gotta salute you for remembering such a great female character in a badass staring role.

This was such a good movie. Could never figure out why it didn’t get any love. I watch it every chance I get.
Its plot has the CIA create a fake terrorist attack on American soil to raise their budget. It's problematic following 9/11 and America's obsession with paranoid conspiracies. That's why it doesn't get airtime anymore.
Same with Sean Connery in _Wrong Is Right_ (1982), a dark comedy about late 1970s current events and journalistic integrity that has traces of _Network_ in it. Connery plays investigative journalist Patrick Hale who is trying to unravel a conspiracy. Henry Silva plays Rafeeq, a Middle-Eastern dictator who is based on Saddam Huessein. Rafeeq hires a group of Russian-sponsored West German terrorists (based on the nihilistic Baader-Meinhof Gang) who will smuggle a pony nuke on top of one of the Twin Towers to devastate New York City. Robert Conrad plays General Wombat, a paranoid warmonger who might let the attack happen to restore the Army's budget back to Vietnam War levels to fight an unlimited 'War on Terror'. It has both a Gulf War and a 9/11 vibe.
Yes! I am not alone thinking this was such a good movie. Loved the chemistry between Davis and Jackson.
I love Long Kiss Goodnight. One of those films I cycle back to every few years to rewatch. I'm actually glad it didn't become a series of films, they'd only have made me hate it in the long run.
This was one of my mama's favorites. I learned how to spot a real movie from her, she's no longer with us.
I never forgot this film, seeing it pop up out of nowhere like this almost made me lose it.

Such an underrated movie that is part of my Christmas action movie list. The scene with Brian Cox and the little dog still gets me every time.

How old am I?! I watched this movie on opening weekend while I was still serving in the NAVY up in Seattle! Good times...this is the movie that made me a Geena Davis fan! She was a BEAST in this movie and the way she and Samuel played off each other was GOLD!!!
I think this simply has to be her best acting ever. She's absolutely stellar in this. I never thought about a sequel (its a rather self-contained story) but Drinker is right, this should have had a sequel.

I love this movie. One of the most underrated movies of its time, if not, all time, for what it is. A good old-fashioned action flick with *gasp* a strong female character. Whod'a thunk? Oh that's right, anyone who'd seen the original Star Wars Trilogy, the first two Terminator films, or the first three Alien films.

This is such a great movie. I can watch it over and over again.
I remember watching this back in the early 2000’s it was on late one night and no one had anything better to do. I was hooked from the start and by the end I couldn’t believe how good it was! When she was dicing the veggies like MasterChef I knew there was something going on in her head but damn, the other her was f’kn amazing!! I’ve never forgotten this film and even after many similar movies have come out since, it remains one of the BEST female lead action flicks IMHO. She completely sold that role! Thanks for giving this film the recognition it bloody deserves!!!
Speaking of Cutthroat Island, that's a movie that DEFINITELY deserves a spot on the Drinker's "Production Hell" lineup!

I actually liked this movie. It was flawed but enjoyable.
I remember wanting to watch that movie when it came out. I finally got a chance to try and watch it about a year ago. I think I only made it about 30 minutes and I was done.

I don't think there was a "production hell" as much as it was just marketed badly and came out during an unfortunate time when the studio poured so much money into it.

*My dad loved this movie and the mirror scene where her reflection was different was genuinely one of the only thing that truly scared me as a kid watching this with my dad, even to this day a little freaked out by staring into mirrors too long lmao, great movie*
I can't remember if it was Tales from the Darkside or The Outer Limits, but there was this episode where everytime the protagonist saw his reflection some dark demonic creature would get closer to him... so he broke every mirror and covered reflective surfaces. That had sort of the same effect on me.
My thing is looking at a mirror that has the reflection of another mirror, so the image that is reflected is reflected into eternity.
I was like seven when I first saw that and it gave me the understanding of what eternity means, and it scared the living bejeebus out of me.

I've loved this movie when it came out, and just looked it up and rewatched it a month ago.
It still holds up, and is a lot more satisfying than any female-lead action movies I've seen in the last twenty years or so.
I love that movie, have my copy sitting on the shelf. Geena Davis is totally believable in her confusion and fear. Sam Jackson hits that slightly arrogant, slightly incompetent tone perfectly. "When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of you, ... and umption." LOL
I so unabashedly love this movie, it’s a guilty pleasure of me AND my mother, who also watches it at least yearly I’m sure. It’s such a great ride

in the mid 90s to early 2000s my group of friends used to get into a car on a saturday or sunday, and 1 person would pick a theatre, and we would go see the first movie showing. then another person would pick a theatre and we would see the first movie showing there. that is how i ended up seeing gems like long kiss and dark city in theatres. i felt both were extremely well done, and i really do think these movies are excellent. i do agree, it felt like they tried to "go big" on a budget that couldnt carry the larger things like the end. this was def a 8/10 for me, possibly even 8.5/10.
This is a great film, and you were right, i did forget, thanks for reminding me about it. Its up there with 'True Lies' and Jamie Lee Curtis showing what i would call a strong female role. Wish we could return to times like this in film.
This, Thelma & Louise, The Fly, A League of Their Own, and quite the outfit in Transylvania 65000....Geena Davis kicked ass, and does deserve more recognition.
Geena Davis was "this close" to representing the USA at the Olympics, in 2000, in Archery. There is a Charlie in there somewhere.
Long Kiss Goodnight is a great film and well remembered. We had an industry sales conference with a Movie Character themed event one night. One of the girls at the conference approached me early on the day looking for any costume ideas that she could do quickly, easily and cheaply. I handed her a water pistol and told her to wear anything tight and black, gel her hair back and go really heavy on the mascara. She had her Long Kiss Goodnight costume done in 30 seconds.

If we're being honest, the best films to see are older films you may have missed. Very little of the new stuff coming out is enjoyable.

Loved this movie as a kid. My mom and I would always watch it together. Damn I need to see this one again soon, it’s been too long
Stumbled across this one back in the days of DVD rental. Went for it with no great expectations. Was very pleasantly surprised.
I would also add: the scene where Charlie gives her daughter a stern talking to about the need to toughen up to deal with the world is very memorable. That has always stuck with me, and feels especially relevant in these times.
Had this exact moment when my son broke his wrist. It happened when he was with my mom. I was working a 12 hour shift. My mother didn't call me at work even though she thought it could be broken. I arrive to pick him up, tired and ready to go home. Instead my mother met me at the door and told me about his wrist. I walked in and my son is just laying on her bed, watching YT on her phone, seemingly fine. No tears, no screaming, nothing.
So I told my mother it's probably fine. She kept telling me I had to take him to Urgent Care. I kept blowing her off while telling my son to go put on his shoes so we could go home. My mom kept pleading, practically in tears, to take him to Urgent Care just to be sure. I lost my patience, called over my son and told him to give me his arm. He got scared and tentatively reached out his arm. I held it and told him to wiggle his fingers. Fine. Bend his elbow fine. My mom is still pleading with me. I'm about to tell her she's being ridiculous, when I rotate his arm and he screams so loud I literally jumped.
2 hours later, we are leaving Urgent Care with a soft cast, and and appointment to get a plaster one.
This scene was playing in my head the entire time I was in there.

I’ve given both my kids a variation of this and Rocky’s “how much you can take but keep moving forward” speech
I remember this gem, and how movies weren’t made with agendas or “the message”. Characters were a bit more natural and believable compared to a lot of what’s put out lately. Women could be strong and independent without having to belittle others.
Or without it being ridiculous. This new version where they never take any damage and they simply flawlessly beat the crap out of men five times their size with zero effort is just hilarious.
Him showing footage of the absolutely textbook example of this Charlie's Angels 2019 is exactly what I'm talking about. These light movies that don't try at all to have believable women characters who are absolutely paper thin with personalities that are both interchangeable and forgettable

Craig Bierko was hilarious as the villain in this! His "Continue dying" over the radio & "you're about to have 2.5 children" when he pulls out his knife in front of a family are brilliant.
The dude had some solid comedic chops. I can see why he was offered the role of Chandler on Friends(which he turned down).

It is a BRILLIANT film. You've reminded me to watch it again. It has mystery, action, twists, fun characters and its just an EXCELLENT film.

"Bitch, what are you good for!" - Epic movie so shockingly well done by Gina Davis. I haven't watched it in a while but I don't remember having to suspend my disbelief too often. It may be because she takes so much physical damage that you see her wanting to give up like any normal, even courageous, person would do. But, unlike most movies where they just get angry to rise to the occasion, you see her dig REALLY deep, into her very deep well of training and vast experience of just soldiering on anyway. Superb movie and thanks Drinker for bringing it back.
Don't forget, she goes through so much that she does break eventually, but then she finds a new well of resolve to draw from and keeps going just that little bit further again.
Her daughter being the bridge between the two personalities is something they'd never do.
As a 6 foot woman and athlete she reminds me of a 90's version of Gina Carano.

I saw this in the theater, and have rewatched it every few years. Its a fantastic action movie. Loved it.
I watched this movie as soon as I could get it on VHS at my local rental store back when I was 12 or 13. Loved every minute of it....Geena Davis was rockin' it back then. Also, Cutthroat Island is one of my favorite movies to this day.
I never understood why "The Long Kiss Goodnight" didn't get more recognition. It was directed by Reny Harlin (Gena's husband at the time...), had a great supporting cast and was a solid action film. Brian Cox's one liners were some of the best. Though, the last act is kinda' bloated and over the top. It's a film that I watch every holiday season.
I know most of folks don't like "Cutthroat Island" but for me it is one of the best pirate movies. Gina Davies was great in it.
It's always been one of my all time favorite action flicks. Talk about a strong Independent woman without trying so hard. I put her up there with Sarah Connor and Ripley. i saw it in the flicks and own the bluray and watch it every christmas
I wonder how much of it has to do with the poor antagonist. He's not memorable at all. I have a similar problem with a lot of the MCU movies too - I can't tell you what happened in either of the first two Thor or Cap movies, partly because I don't remember ANYTHING about the antagonists in those movies, so I can't think through what the storyline was, and without basic framework all those movies literally just fell out of my brain.

I wonder if her beauty, as she is a gorgeous woman, maybe is perceived more for romance than action? it is what happens to me with Kate Beckinsale too in Underworld, I forced myself to watch it because for the actress I felt it would be (and in part it was) a romance meant for girls, I can enjoy it but is not something I am looking for. I didn't watch Cutthroat Island for that reason.

Long Kiss Goodnight is a classic, its one of those heartwarming Christmas movies that my family watches every year
This has always been one of my favourite movies of all time - I never understood why this movie didn't do well at the box office and the fact people just don't even know about its existence. Whenever I've hosted movie nights at my place I always play this for my friends, to educate them 🙃 Also it warms my heart that the Drinker is recommending this movie.

There is an obvious explanation. The director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) made two movies within 1 year both with his wife Geena Davis as the star. Unfortunately the first of those two movies was Cutthroat Island (released december 1995 in USA) which was one of the worst box office bombs in Movie History. When time came to release The Long Kiss Goodnight only 10 months later Hollywood already had lost faith in the director and the marketing was less than enthusiastic. Almost everyone blames the bad marketing for the movie failing but collateral damage over Cutthroat Island bombing resulting in lackluster marketing is probably the real answer. Everyone seems to agree the movie itself cant be blamed. It basically has cult status on RUclips. Try find a single movie channel which doesnt like the movie. Remember Shawshank Redemption, one of the greatest movies of all time which also didn’t do well at the box office because of its name. So I’m not surprised. But this movie was awesome. Fun fact, this is Samuel L Jackson’s favourite movie he’s made. I love the way he sings to himself when he’s doing things to the tune of ‘Bad to the bone’ lol

I remember The Long Kiss Goodnight being a favorite of mine as a teen and I frequently popped this one into the VCR whenever I wanted some good action. The soundtrack, the pacing, the build up, the grounded relatability (no aliens or robots), it all just made for a great action flick. Still is!
Stumbled on this one quiet afternoon in the theater when I was bored, had the day off, and everyone was busy. Matinees were cheap, and ended up loving it way more than I thought.
I showed my wife this film about 3 months ago. Gorgeous women, great character. Solid film.
Always enjoyed this film; great hero, excellent sidekick, fantastic villain, and Brian Cox; what an impressive career he has had.

Watched this again last year cause my miss' hadn't seen it and Davis was legit! Holds up nicely too. The ice skating assassin scene 👌👌👌😄🤘

I saw this movie about 10 years ago and loved it. Great plot ………reminds me a bit of the first Bourne movie. 👍 great video as always
I remember seeing this on tv years after it came out and wondering why I had never heard of it. By 90s standards it was awesome, by today's standards it's a masterpiece. Davis is a wonderful actress who should have gotten many more action roles than she did.
In the 1990s it would have been a run of the mill film but by today's standards it is a masterpiece.
When calling it run of the mill that means there are lots of other films in that era just as good.
Yeah it's rare and awesome when time elevates a movie that was unjustly tossed aside in it's day.
The '90s are littered with amazing films that were simply scoffed at and tossed into the "just another one of these" pile at the time.
It's always good to know people can actually see quality when it appears to them even if it's from literally 26 years ago.
Man, we millennials as moviegoers actually had it much better back in the 1990's than we realized at the time. I was only going into my early teens before the clocks struck 2000, and only with hindsight am I shocked to see how low we sank in creating good entertainment and have a such a low bar to clear. Granted, I still personally believe the two decades from 1962 to 1982 were the best years in cinema, but the 1990's still have commendable gems worth rediscovering that I would pick over most of the junk in theaters during the past five years alone.
Let's not forget Michelle Yeoh as a kickass bond girl in Tomorrow Never Dies and alongside Jackie Chan in Police Story 3 Supercop where she did all her own stunts to the point where it actually freaked out Jackie and he had to up his game to compete with her, and her fantastic role alongside Ziyi Zhang in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, I could mention films from the 70s and 80s as well that just had great female leads....modern writers completely suck at writing female characters for action roles
We watch this while wrapping presents every year. Definitely a Christmas movie.
Watched this again a few months back. I went and bought every film (exc. The Predator!) written by Shane Black that I didn't already have, and this one was a real thrill. There were some really nice character moments, especially with Sam Jackson ("Gonna go to the Men's room.../Shake hands with the man..."), and many other joys, that I can forgive Black for one little misstep. The Nice Guys certainly made up for The Predator.
Never expected to see this. Long Kiss Goodnight is one of my favorite action flicks for many reasons, and it's apparently Sam's favorite action role ever. At least that's what he once said on Jimmy Fallon or whatever. It made me super sad that nobody in the audience even knew what he was talking about, as the movie sadly bombed super hard. It isn't perfect by any means, but Charlie is still a fucking awesome character, and the movie clearly shows that Hollywood didn't just have female action heroes long before Black Widow, they actually did it better back in the day. My favorite thing about the movie is that it's not a gender swapped character - the entire story revolves around Charlie being a woman. That's kinda what makes Long Kiss Goodnight unique. And I fucking love the movie for it.
When all the femininity is taken out of a female action character, then it isn't a female action character. Geena Davis and Shane Black did good in this.
Another good example of a female character done really well was Sharon Stone in The Quick and the Dead from 1994

As 10 year old boy, I loved this movie! This was at the end of the Stalon, Van Damme, and Schwarzenegger's height of popularity. There weren't that many action movies with women in them, but I remember this being one ofu favorite.

This falls among one of my top twenty action movies of all time. A really convincing female fatale film which never removed the feminity of the protagonist.
A real master piece worthy of respect.

This Christmas action movie is an underrated 💎 that takes me back to my childhood. I miss the 90s my childhood.

THANK YOU Drinker!!! The Long Kiss Goodnight has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid. My sister and I would quote lines from it all the time. I always felt this movie was so underrated.
As a fan of the spy/assassin movie genre, this film ranks right up there with Ronin, 1998 as one of the best, yet criminally underrated "spy flicks" to never get a sequel. Good job, Drinker, in fanning the flames of "Why the hell isn't hollywood making great films like these anymore?!"

This is one of my favorite movies since I was little! I made my roommate watch this recently. Davis and Jackson were awesome in this. I love that you know about this!
I remember the whole "the woman is the action hero in this movie!" thing being used to sell this movie before it came out. I think that marketing ploy hurt the movie too. Now they did deliver on the promise, but I don't think that's what people wanted to see.
They should have promoted it as a mystery/thriller, "who is this woman and what is her forgotten past?" And then have Davis being the action hero as the twist when she regains her memory. The movie seems laid out that way, and they should have played to that instead of trying to make Davis the next Schwarzenegger. Just my opinion with hindsight.

Ha! This was one of the first films I worked on in the industry, shot in Toronto back in '95. Geena Davis was an absolute goddess. This film is sorely overlooked, so thanks for giving it some props 👍
