I really like your technique! It is genius how you use selections and the eraser tool. Your character is intriguing, as well, especially with the amount of detail you used to render the fabric. She has Steampunk style, with her Colonial pistols, but has a modern twist with her low rise skinny jeans.
Really awesome illustration! I love how you achieved the look in her shirt and her wardrobe in general! Fantastic job with this over the shoulder back view! Keep up the amazing work!
Yea of course! Its always great to be able to see how a fellow artist paints and works so this was super helpful! Out of curiosity do you work in a studio professionally?
really amazing work, I learned a lot watching this. I think though near the end where you are changing the hue of the highlights and shadows, you could achieve that effect more easily using some of the other layer options like Multiply and Screen. This is the technique I use to composite 3d renders, and I believe it would work as well in this case where you have already "rendered" (painted in) the lighting and shadows in black and white.
Typical Tofu Thanks for watching! While I could use other layer modes such as Multiply or Screen to achieve different colors it would alter the value in addition to hue and saturation. What I like about Color mode is that it DOESNT change the lights and darks put down in my black & white "underpainting". I put all that work into the black and white so as to be sure the piece works value wise and don't want to loose it moving to color.
Francisco Soto Alvial Hi Francisco! This took about two days if I recall. Would have been a bit quicker if I was doing it straight out with out filming or worrying about the demoing. Thanks for watching!
It's a great video, but I wish you could have added voice narration at the beginning. Maybe slow down for the description, then speed up again as you do the bulk of the actual work. But Thank You for the video.
Ahhhaha! I am really surprised that you used colour mode instead of Multiply. Usually I see a lot of artist making that mistake. I usually do another method when it to doing the same trick. This was really interesting! Great work btw.
+SaltyCoffee Thanks for watching! Yeah if I used Multiply blending mode for the color it would change the values and make all that work of painting in full black & white kinda pointless.
Yes it is! It was originally created for a class I teach on digital painting. I played the video while narrating to the class live. Worked great! The info cards before each stage detail tools used and technique as well. Thanks for watching!
Love it! Are you pre-defining your selections as alpha channels in the beginning? Looks like you're doing something to get those smooth selections when you start blocking in color. Looking forward to seeing you at Spectrum if you're going this year!
Eric Summers Hi Eric. Definitely going to Spectrum this year. Stop by and say hello. Regarding the video... Yes I am creating selections for the main elements of the painting. In this case it is the Jacket, head, pants etc... (First through the magic selection and lasso tools etc... then I use the mask to refine by "painting" or erasing the rough selection.) I then save them so I can load them throughout the painting. Just saves time so I don't have to keep creating them over and over again. Make sense? Thanks for checking out the video!
very interesting, I'll have to rewatch this tomorrow when I have more time on my hands. left you a sub :) I definitely have to amp up my drawing skills though ... the sketch looks pretty amazing
+Don Mo'ayad Thanks for watching! The video was originally created for a lecture where I would talk through the process as it played. Music just wouldn't have been ideal in that situation. There's always the option to fire up iTunes and play any music you like in the background too.
If you mean keyboard shortcuts then not really. I reassigned a few so that it replicates photoshop a bit more closely. Such as the Hand/Graber tool and a few others.
Steven Kaul Hi Steven. I just created it myself by starting with a blank color palette and added grey swatches in 10% increments from 0% Black to 100% White. Thanks for watching!
I've posted the custom palette for download if your interested. Heres a link... www.dropbox.com/s/xvxrcss097b4x7w/Greyscale%20Swatches%20-%20Swashbucklestudio.com.aco?dl=0 Just click the swatches palette options and select "Load swatches". Find the downloaded file and you should be good to go.
+takeshi sonora Thanks for watching! The masking is being used to create precise selections of basic elements of the image (For Example: silhouette of the figure). After the selection is finished I then save it so I can keep loading the selection over and over again throughout the entire process of the image.
Not necessarily. I do when I want to keep the painting or adjustment contained to a particular area. And by saving the selection I can load it whenever I want saving me the time of having to recreate it every time I need to use it.
Hi Aspirante! It's most definitely a demo of my painting process more than anything else. Hence, the video's description... "Live beginning to end demo of my digital painting process using adobe Photoshop & Corel Painter." I titled the video as "Digital Painting Character Design Demo" because it was used as a prelim character study (And to coincided with a project for the class I teach) for other book cover illustrations using that specific character. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks for watching! No talking. This was created as a live demo/lecture for a course I teach digital painting. Basically I play it for the class while I Narrate the technique and thought process live. The info cards before each stage detail tools used and technique as well. Works great! Thanks again for your interest.
It really worked for me after I look and try some tutorials, yours is the one that worked. Owe you a lot.
Thanks for watching!

+Makii Blue Thanks for watching!
I don't know if it's just me but is this video supposed to be completely silent? (as in, no commentary or music whatsoever, just him doing his thing)
Yes it is! It was originally created for a class I teach on digital painting. I played the video while narrating to the class live. Worked great! The info cards before each stage detail tools used and technique as well. Thanks for watching!

Nice Work Bro!
Excellent work! :)
Please post more!
great work!
Thanks! Just saw this... Sorry for the delayed response!
Awesome video . I got a question. When you're using the eraser , the opacity, do you change it manualy or does it change with the pen pressure ?
+Jiji Hergé A little of both but I do feel like there is more control using opacity. Thanks for watching!
Cool!
How much time you painted this?
Great tutorial, bud.
Thanks for watching!
@Dominick Saponaro, I real enjoyed your tutorial. In my opinion you explained very well.
Like you I love using both Photoshop and painter.
Helped a lot!
+Rodrigo Martinez Thanks for watching!
Hi. Out of curiousity, what size and dpi are you working on? Great work!
Ritchie Ramirez Thanks! This one was 12" x 12" @ 300dpi.

So usefull thank you :)
Nice video,
it's really good keep it up
but it needs a music.. if someone doesn't want music can mute the video that gives us an option
+Don Mo'ayad Thanks for watching! The video was originally created for a lecture where I would talk through the process as it played. Music just wouldn't have been ideal in that situation. There's always the option to fire up iTunes and play any music you like in the background too.
+Dominick Saponaro True True..
+Dominick Saponaro Is there any chance to see that lecture? Thanks for the video, helped a lot.
Yeah! I think that would be great
+Don Mo'ayad Sorry! It wasn't recorded. It was done for a class I teach on digital painting at the University of the Arts.
what's the shortcut buttons that you use the most on corel painter?
Ha! Good question its probably Command Z. Thanks for watching!
I meant to say if you had any shortcuts custom made :/
If you mean keyboard shortcuts then not really. I reassigned a few so that it replicates photoshop a bit more closely. Such as the Hand/Graber tool and a few others.
where do you find that black and white swatch palette?
Steven Kaul Hi Steven. I just created it myself by starting with a blank color palette and added grey swatches in 10% increments from 0% Black to 100% White. Thanks for watching!
I've posted the custom palette for download if your interested. Heres a link...

Just click the swatches palette options and select "Load swatches". Find the downloaded file and you should be good to go.
+Dominick Saponaro oh wow, thank you so much, and thanks for the prompt reply!
is corel painter worth it? versus PS?
Yes! Most definitely worth it for the natural media brushes! I wouldn't be able get the oil painting feel without. Thanks for watching.
best Course!
I dont get the masking part
Good video nonetheless
+takeshi sonora Thanks for watching! The masking is being used to create precise selections of basic elements of the image (For Example: silhouette of the figure). After the selection is finished I then save it so I can keep loading the selection over and over again throughout the entire process of the image.
+Dominick Saponaro I see, do I have to keep selecting it when I want to paint the area throughout the painting process?
Not necessarily. I do when I want to keep the painting or adjustment contained to a particular area. And by saving the selection I can load it whenever I want saving me the time of having to recreate it every time I need to use it.
+Dominick Saponaro I already mask a part, and save the selection like u shown, now how do I access it easily throughout the painting process?
+takeshi yonora +takeshi yonora right under the "save selection" command there is "Load
selection".
plz script and voice your next video subbed
That's an illustration not a character design demo
