Im studying astrophysics because of this show. When i first started watching it i was probably 17 and i was in a dark place, it blew my mind away and cheered me up a lot. Then i was lucky enough to find a bunch of astrophysicists who were passionate and kind enough to help me follow that passion too. This show means the world to me.
I think the reason why this anime/ manga isn't as popular is because people now days are only interested in shounen manga and animes that include battling. I my opinion the best animes are the ones that inspire you and motivate you to follow your dreams. That's what makes the job of being a mangas and an animator so FREAKING AMAZING!
I like this anime due to the fact it's refreshing to see one that doesn't involve over the top fights, bullshit teenage angst and seems more towards my age bracket (I'm 28) I find the characters interesting, the story is good and the fact they accurately talk about NASA's programs make me give this 5 out of 5 stars.
there is a lot of different genres of manga.. you just need to look for non shonen mangas and thats it, you will find a lot of slice of life stories that doesnt involve "over the top fights" etc etc

I'm 18, I like mecha, sifi, and horror type anime and I almost decided not to watch this just because everything in it looked so plain, but I decided to watch it anyway out of curiosity and it was AWESOME! Really, how popular would some big anime be if they had zero fan service? The saying goes "sex sells" and unfortunately that's very true, meaning that anything that doesn't have at least one character who almost has her tits out all the time, it likely won't be very popular.

(and honestly im glad it has been) There's even been a live action version made about it,which i'm not going to go into detail about. as for FS (fan service),i'm also glad that this shows doesn't really resort to needlessly shoving it into our faces.However i'd also like to point out their have also been some FS shows that have really surprised me,and turned out to be better than anything i've seen,i know FS makes us feel uncomfortable,and it's in every anime now,but i feel i owe it to people to offer an opposing viewpoint to it as well,its not always good to judge a book by its cover. Otherwise you'll end up missing out on things you wouldn't otherwise have considered.
HazyLazyJazy I am big fan of Natsume Yuujinchou, Mushishi, Space Brothers etc. There are anime out there without fanservice, but unfortunately it is not very easy to find.

Space Brothers is one of the most popular manga/anime in Japan.
As a guy who was recently there, Space Brothers was everywhere.

Dreams is something that unique to humans. And Space Brothers is one of the few mangas out there that can capture this "dream" that Humans have.
