I can tell you exactly why LA's getting all the coverage: The majority of those affected are very rich by comparison, and some of them can pay for the Corporate owned media to give them all the attention. Plus, in LA, it's a major metropolitan area, so lots of news media have already been established there, along with all the big-city businesses and whatever. All that money changing hands, business, business, business... That's all it is. Keep it up, @StatusCoup!

@@Thyalwaysseek Agree. There are many people in less advantaged surrounding areas that the media hasn't covered at all. In fact, in these 2 tucked-away articles I saw, those residents said they had diverted all firefighters to the wealthy areas, and so, in addition to media not covering their stories, the govt was just letting their neighborhoods burn to the ground. Sadly, seeing how they've handled the aftermath of Helene, I can't say that I'm that surprised, though it's still horrifying.

Media focus on celebrities, but most in Altadena are not rich, neither were the residents of a huge mobile home park in Palisades. Relief never comes fast enough for victims who have lost what took decades to build. In months to come, those in L.A. will still be struggling too. As for NC, the federal gov. had disbursed $17 million to NC victims within a week of the storm. This month it was announced that NC governments have been awarded $1.65 billion in block grants, with $225 million of that to Asheville. So far, fed. gov has provided affected states $100 billion in total for Helene relief. Let's not pit one group of ordinary victims against another. It's billionaires looking for tax cuts and to starve the federal government we should worry about.

@@bawbjusbawb6471 Look to the state. Federal gov just released $352.6 million to the TDOT and NCDOT. Block grants in the billions are to the state. I know it's frustrating but clearing rubble, rebuilding homes, roads and infrastructure take a long time. No doubt lucrative contracts will go to favored companies, but that's more on the local level.

Thank you for continuing to cover this tragedy. We had a terrible storm and damage in May (27th-28th) in Dallas, Texas, and had major losses. Our insurance company of 14+ years (All-State) denied ALL coverage despite us having only 1 relatively small claim in all those years, and FEMA denied us as well. We were without power for 6 days. It's been a nightmare. I'm disabled and on a fixed income. On top of all that, our CPA basically has caused us to lose our entire life savings due to his incompetence and other 8ssues. I have no idea what we're going to do. My husband turned 70 in November, and now he can't retire. It breaks my hear that these companies and government agencies are able to get away with this with No accountability. Lahaina is very difficult because the cost of rebuilding is prohibitive and all the burned material has to be transported back to mainland. There’s so much lead and asbestos in the Lahaina burn that getting skilled workers to remediate it is also incredibly difficult. The appraised value of the houses lost is less than 5% of what it would take to replace each dwelling. None of those people can afford that. This has happened plenty of times in history. People being displaced due to disaster is the human condition. My family lost everything in a flood that changed the river path and because the middle of the river was the property line, the new river path put all our farmland into the neighbor’s allotment. No flood insurance. Nothing we could do. We weren’t a farming family anymore. Had to live in a garage for 5 years until we could rebuild. It’s like folks forgot this has happened hundreds of times in American history alone but keep defying nature building in low land, speeding up climate change, and having no defensible space around their home. North Carolina needs to use the bootstraps they voted for. Same as Florida does. Same as Texas.

I share the ...frankly, hatred of the idle rich. Three things, though. #1 the enemy are the super-rich and the political propaganda and policies they've erected to prevent things like FEMA from working for The People, whom they view as unimportant. And #2 Many, MANY people living in the fire zones were not the rich. They just weren't. And what is really going on in LA and California right now is that millions of normal people are jumping to one another's aid, doing EXACTLY the same kind of food and supply drives that folks in and around North Carolina are doing. The People are trying mightily to meet one another's needs. Because normal people are moral, generally. #3 Whatever "promises" you are hearing about aid to California are being accompanied by a greater dose of hatred and scorn from a lot of this country...not to mention "conditions" from the Right. We are hearing THAT shit loud and clear in the midst of our devastation and pain. Believe it or not, in California, it very much feels like our recovery is going to be on us. Because the oligarchy likes it that way and will seek to profit from all of our disasters, either way. So lets not hate the victims and the very courageous legions of normal people who are the real responders and helpers. Lets keep our targeted, righteous fury pointed at the oligarchy, their misinformation and their political machines.

However, don't be misled to think that people that have lost everything in Palisades, Altadena, etc are getting handfuls of cash. They likely won't get any more support than anyone else. Donations are coming in but nobody's going to get rich on this. A lot of people will lose their homes if they didn't have insurance... And insurance rates have skyrocketed so you know there's going to be a lot of people that don't have it. Many will have to walk away. I think some of the elderly people that died chose to die... If they had no insurance they might have felt they had no other option. It's not going to be easy here either, at least for people that are not part of the rich. Not all of Palisades is Rich and most of Altadena is working class. Working class are not rich

Hello everyone! I'm writing this post in hopes to bring awareness to the widespread devastation brought to WNC by Helene. My mother's 1st floor of her 2 story home in Swannanoa, NC was flooded out by Helene (the "2nd floor" is just a frog used for storage) But she lost everything on the 1st floor which was basically her entire life, including her living room furniture, everything in her bedroom which was all of her clothes, 2 TVs, photo albums and framed photos of prescious memories, everything in her kitchen, everything in her garage and even her vehicle was completely destroyed to the point that it is now totaled. The worst part of it all in my opinion is she wasn't able to locate her cat "Little Bit" that day and so it broke her heart having to leave town never knowing what happened to her. So she came to live with me the first few weeks and is now staying with my Uncle in Charlotte NC until we all can figure out what her next steps are to recovering/rebuilding her home. She's gotten estimates from several people and it's looking like a minimum of $20,000 is needed to rewire everything and remodel all of the first floor and stairwell. She does NOT want to sell her home but has already been offered to do so twice and was shocked that someone would even consider such a thing when that home is all she has left! She's 65 and was set to retire this year, and has lived there for 20+ years. I've set up a GoFundMe in her name hoping to get some help from anyone and everyone that has anything they could donate. It doesn't matter if you can only help out with $5 because if enough people can help with small amounts, it will eventually add up. Our family has already agreed to match whatever this fundraiser obtains. If you're not so comfortable with sending money directly, she definitely will need Lowe's, Home Depot, or even Walmart gift cards once we start the rebuilding process which will probably be sometime this spring or summer. But I know she will be happy with any and all help anyone can provide. FEMA granted her the initial $750 but that is pennies in the 55 gallon drum that's needed to help her somewhat get back to living her life. Of course insurance is not covering anything because she did not have flood insurance which is unbelievable considering where she lived next to the Swannanoa River. Nobody ever expected that river to rise 50 feet and wooden by 200 feet though...She's my best friend in the world and I want nothing more than for her to live out her last few years in peace and I will be doing everything I can to make sure it happens. Thanks everyone for your time reading this and I hope everyone is doing better day by day from such a tragedy that nobody ever expected! God bless and we love you all!

I find it poetically ironic that Trump's camp is forgetting just how big a footprint the Republican Party has in that region.

And that is wrong. Ashville will be filled with new mountain cabins and rented out as Airbnb's. Residents will lose their land because of no insurance, back taxes and mortgages they can't pay.

The first flood I experienced in New Orleans was in the 90's. People who didn't have flood insurance were able to get money to rebuild their houses through FEMA but had to purchace flood insurance and maintain it. Now FEMA give you $700 and the rest of the money goes to the state.

Damage to infrastructure and terrain downstream of lakes and reservoirs such as North Fork Reservoir, Bee Tree Reservoir, Flat Top Mountain Lake and Tahoma Reservoir can be explained by flash floods due to releases, overflows or breaches from d_m_, in combination with pluvial flash floods due to runoff over steep terrain. These high velocity flows up rooted trees, dislodged boulders, and swept away homes everything in the path. Damage to infrastructure in main water courses was due to secondary flood processes, which occurred when river flooding conveyed flash flood debris flows from the creeks. This debris acted as battering rams destroying more infrastructure and the whole process became compounded on and on down river. Suffice to say that to gain the force to destruct buildings requires potential energy that can only be imparted by water from high elevation.

You want a story about Helene in Florida. Interview me. I'm losing everything over insurance companies that I paid for, the bank holding money, a lawyer that specializes in claims that filed too late and now finding out. Fema cut our hotel off cause the inspector came for milton not Helene and we are cut off. Fkn nightmare

I agree California residents should get equal to what NC hurricane Helene got from FEMA. NC residents got $700 and are sleeping in tents in the snow and freezing temperatures. By all means treat them equal.
