The Mighty Ducks sure is a movie that people love. It had a couple sequels and is now back as a Disney+ TV show. Despite all that, the original movie is kind of enjoyably terrible. Cute kids, but that's about it. And sins galore.

Yes in kids' minor hockey, you really only need one player to carry a team... trust me
To be fair that's most children's sports...... Back when I played football we had this one kid that was at least 3 times the sizes of everyone else in the league...... Our whole strategy became give him the ball every play.....won the championship that year.
Sooo true. But not so much in little league baseball. You'd have one guy who'd hit a homer or extra base hit every at bat, followed by eight other kids who'd strike out.

You missed the best part of the film. The French Horn solo playing When Gordon skates again for the first time. That’s one of the most iconic French horn solos ever written.
As a French Horn player, hearing that solo made my heart sing. The instrument is so well utilized in this movie.

Growing up in Minnesota I knew kids that were used as extras and stunt doubles in this.

"It's not worth winning if you can't win big" is just a saying the coach came up with to encourage the players to stay aggressive.
Or if you’re Mighty Ducks 3 you WILL get your score tied from a 9-0 to 9-9 somehow.
I can picture the writers trying to come up with PG insults and somebody yelled out "cake-eater" and they all congratulated him for such a brilliant line.
It's actually a legit MN insult. It refers to the "uppity" white rich folk of the region. Someone gave a fantastic explanation earlier in the comments. I recommend looking for it!

I was watching the Golden knights, ducks game the other day and they had Marguerite Moreau do an interview and to answer your question... yes she absolutely got her characters last name changed to Moreau to have a custom ducks jersey to wear at school. She said it was even more special for her when the ducks became a national team. She confirmed it herself.

Most hockey teams in MN play on a home rink named after their team. They just name all levels of the organization the same name so you’ll have the Peewee panthers and the high school panthers and those banners are very common. I’ve actually played a couple games in that same arena growing up.

Logically yes, but screenwriters wanted her to be overprotective single mom so that overrules everything, even logic
yeah, i used to live in the midwest and people would drive their trucks on lakes much bigger than that.
As a Minnesotan, I feel like he needs to redact one sin for the car not falling through the ice. It’s a Minneapolis public skating rink. Which means there’s only about 3 inches of ice on top of a field of grass. If anything you should be sinning the fact that the mom was worried that the car would fall through 3 inches of ice and not be able to get out.
I have seen this movie 1000 times, and youre telling me the penalty shot at the start wasn't a final shooter in a shootout? I thought he lost the game, my whole life is a lie.
I can see why he would blamed himself. As his evil coach pointed out to him, he had every possible advantage to make the shot and win the game, and he still missed. The other team then got a goal in during overtime and won the championship. It’s wrong, because it was still a team effort, and the team was only there thanks to him, but human minds can often focus on that one costly mistake and forget all the good done before and after.
Listen to the audio in the opening credits. He gets pulled down from behind on a breakaway with a few seconds left.
Shootouts only happened in international hockey back in this time back in ‘92. NHL introduced shootouts in 2005.

The problem is still that way too much emphasis is much on his missed shot, especially how he falls to his knees. That is definitely an "it's over" gesture.

The sins for the Flying V are so pitch perfect. That shit was iconic but as soon as I started watching real hockey I had to realize how unbelievably stupid it is

@John Hussar It's definitely nostalgia when it comes to Mighty Ducks, but we do have some great 90's films that still hold up. The Sandlot is a legitimately fantastic sports film.
the trick is to never watch real hockey. this movie is my sole experience with the sport. if i ever get a chance to play i'm gonna be nuckle pucking all over the place
I think it was the second or third Mighty Ducks movie that mocked it as a terrible formation.
The idea of Might Ducks is great. The presence of ice hockey in a movie was sorely missed.
The execution was pretty meh.
And also, even disregarding the 5-men-up mentality of the Flying V...I think the writer must've gotten confused with football, 'cause that's 4 interference calls right there. You can't block that obviously in ice hockey.

The fact that you did a hockey movie, and then added in coach Brook's from "Miracle at the end means you have to do that movie! Has to be one of the greatest sports movies ever.
I cry every time I watch Miracle. So glad I watched the actual game on live television. I loved Herb Brooks.

I'm not gonna lie, when they tweeted they were doing a classic 90s movie everybody loves, this was not the movie I was thinking of

This was exactly the movie I was thinking of.
As someone who grew up playing hockey in Canada, I can tell you that we definitely played more than 25 games a season. Usually the season would start sometime in late sept or early oct, and you’d play two games a weekend with two practices through the week. Also, if you were on a double A or Triple A team you would likely play in around 5-7 tournaments per year, where you would end up playing 3-7 games depending on how well you did. The playoff season started in April and if you went far you’d have to add another 12-25 games... so playing anywhere from 70-110 games in a season was the norm... I assume the hockey in the northern states was very similar as the weather was nearly identical to all of southern Canada (which is where 80% of Canadians live). Wayne Gretzky scored 378 goals in his Pee Wee season... I scored 63... I remember being 8yrs old, driving home from a game where I scored 4 goals and had 2 assists, and I asked my mom “do you think I could make it to the NHL”... she looked quickly at me, smiled, and said “No, of course not!”.
So sorry your mom squashed your NHL dreams so quickly! Or she was just being realistic with you..? I hope you didn't take it too hard. ;-)

I recently got into hockey and met someone that happened to be a youth hockey coach. Long story short, I referenced the flying V as a joke, and he went on for 5 minutes about all of the reasons it was dumb, from the breakaway risk to the interference calls, to how they acknowledged how dumb it was in the 3rd movie. Always surreal to see a grown man get very animated about a kids movie from 30 years ago.
I'm gonna be honest...I feel him. But, also, consider that he's a coach and you mention just getting into hockey. He may have seen it as a teaching opportunity for you, since you're newer to the game.

I had a real life coach who was the sort of 'evil coach' type. He wasn't actually evil, but was extremely strict and yelled a lot, and was all about there is no real reason to play unless you are playing to win every match. He would also get upset if we only won by a small amount and said we should win by more. Best coach I ever had and we went undefeated.

Can you sin Heavyweights? It's a prequel to Dodgeball (kinda). It has many of the same kid actors from The Mighty Ducks.

This movie came out when I was playing pee-wee hockey and had a huge impact on nearly every team. Every other team was quacking and acting like the ducks but we made our chant "it's not worth winning if you can't win big". Also, I was rooting for the hawks in this movie, they deserved to win.

When I played peewee hockey we played about 50 or so games a season. From September to March you played two games a week and tournaments of 3-5 games thanksgiving, Christmas, and one In February. Then you had 3-5 games for playoffs. Gretzky scored 378 goals his last year of peewee hockey.

I love you Jeremy but let me drop just a bit wisdom for you: sometimes nostalgia is enough to make a movie a classic. Especially when the world we live in in the present sucks so bad and Hollywood itself has seemingly made it their model to only make 1 good movie out of every 100 movies they put out. It makes trash put out nearly 30 years ago look like gold. Sometimes nostalgia is enough.
Emilio would rather hang out with a pee wee hockey club instead of The Breakfast Club, which by itself is a major sin.
As a field hockey player, even though ice hockey and field hockey have different things, I appreciate how much Jeremy knows the game. In my area it isn't popular so, I am glad this channel does the proper research.

If you played sports growing up, then you LOVED The Mighty Ducks. Easily one of the best sports and/or kids movie of all time. Used to watch it all the time on sick days from school. Both 1 and 2. Love the sins though!

17:48 Is clearly supposed to be a shot from inside the ice, not a reflection. If it were a reflection, when the puck is dropped, we would have seen the actual puck drop into the shot, but instead we continue to see what looks like a reflection (but is actually just the camera being pointed through some scratched up plexiglass with some translucent paint on it).
Been waiting for this! So many things wrong with all 3 movies that you never notice as a kid. But now knowing the rules of hockey, you’re like ummmm you can’t do any of this lol

I just watched this movie for the first time and I had so many frustrations with it especially since I played hockey growing up. This is sweet confirmation.
I noticed several errors just while watching this video. I'm surprised CinemaSins didn't notice it since they usually seem to spot these things. At 11:28, the newspaper says the Ducks tie the Cardinals 2-2. Then, at 11:35, as Gordon and Hans are walking towards the standings board, you can see the Cardinals are 2nd place(just below the undefeated Hawks) with a record of 8-4-0...no ties. Then when it does a closeup of Hans next to the board, the 2nd place Cardinals' record has been fixed to 8-3-1 to account for the tie against the Ducks.
Another error is that a 10 team league with a 13 game season makes very little sense. It's actually 9 teams as Hans elaborates that the Panthers forfeited their season due to Measles. The standings board has "F" for forfeit under the W/L/T of the Panthers. Only...they didn't forfeit their games. The numbers add up in such a way that it's like the Panthers never played. If they forfeited, every team on their schedule would have gotten a win. Presumably, that includes the Ducks, who are winless. It's possible the Panthers played them and beat them earlier before they had to forfeit their season and their record ultimately wound up being even so they wouldn't impact the standings, but that's awfully convenient. That or somehow the Panthers were never scheduled to play the Ducks in such a tiny league, which also seems unlikely.
Lastly, the error in the tournament structure itself. The Ducks finished 8th, making them the 8 seed. In any common sense tournament structure, their first match would have been against the #1 seed: the Hawks. Instead, they face off against the Hornets(4th seed), then the Cardinals(2nd seed), and then the Hawks(1st seed) in the Championship. It's basically impossible for the matches to happen in that order with any standard tournament format.
I remember liking this movie. But he's right. Nostalgia is the only thing keeping this alive lol
I saw this movie in Brazil, in a movie theater that doesn't exist anymore and it inspired o whole generation of kids to get into hockey in a country where THERE IS NO ICE! That's how powerful this movie is, regardless of how many sins it has. Watched it again recently, same love still there, despite and because of the sins.
Brazil now has 2 Panamerican bronze medals in roller hockey and a jersy in the hockey hall of fame for it's participation (and another bronze medal) in Icehockey even though almost all players ar actually In-Line Hockey players.
All this because of the Ducks.

You must not live near Edina or know anyone from Edina.
I live in Australia and as a kid watching this I asked my mother what it meant. She said she figured it was just a term for someone from a rich family (who can thus always afford cake). I didn't even think it was a region thing.
One of the biggest sins in that movie was that a coach like the Hawks coach survived that long coaching Pee Wee hockey when he's encouraging kids to take cheap shots.
Banks probably wasn't the first player they sent to the hospital and when you've gained that reputation coaching kids, you would probably be fired within a few years.
Maybe, maybe not. They'd never had such a personal motive (disable their former hotshot a) for pragmatic reasons and b) out of spite) before. The Hawks had been the #1 team for years, and probably never needed to go for cheap shots before this.

so, growing up playing travel ice hockey (one of the levels of which is pee wee), I can confirm that yes each travel team was based out of a different ice rink. I will grant that the movie doesn't show this to be the case because it doesn't establish multiple different rinks, but in reality, yes that absolutely makes sense that a given rink would have the championship banners of their travel team hung on the wall. also, in my grade school to high school days there were roughly 10-15 different teams within 30-60 minutes of each other and we played 1-2 games a weekend from September to April for around 50 games a season. granted 198 goals at roughly 4 goals a game would still be ridiculous, but I think Gretzky actually did put up ridiculous numbers like that in his youth and that's probably what they're basing that off of.

Long time watcher, first time commenter, long time fan of this movie and I'd like to add a sin or two.
Just before they cart Banks off the ice, a Hawk player suddenly has a change of heart and yells at the offending Hawk: "What did you do?!"
The other Hawk (think his name was McGill) replies in the most Drago voice possible: "My job."
So sin for both Hawks: the first one for the out-of-nowhere change of heart and the second one because no Pee-Wee hockey player would talk like that, period.

Always love your content, but minor correction on this one. Pee-wee hockey clubs do in fact usually have their own home ice rinks. Normally each local rink will be the home to one specific team and will have banners up like that. As for Gordon not knowing this was their rink, could be a solid sin or the Hawks could have moved to a different rink in the time since he was affiliated and he was just unaware.

There’s a good chance a team like the hawks have their own rink. Normally they have their own organization with teams at different age levels and they would definitely have multiple banners hanging up.
