  • www.ApogeeRockets.com - Customers sometimes ask about the best way to fold a plastic parachute. The answer is that it depends on the weight of your rocket, the parachute size, and how durable you think it is.
In this video, I'll show you two methods that I use when prepping my own rockets for flight. One way will allow the parachute to open really fast, but it puts a bit of extra stress on the shroud line attachment points. I use this technique for lightweight rockets, or if I know the parachute is a bit stronger and more durable. The other way of prepping the parachute allows it to unfurl a little bit slower, which gives the rocket time to reduce speed so that there is less of a snap on the suspension lines. I use it for heavier rockets, or when I'm concerned that the parachute might not be as strong as I'd like.
Do you have a different method? Let us know in the video comments.

Just successfully built my first rocket and loaded the parachute. Now, it’s the hard part of showing the kids how to do their own. Thanks for these videos and quick delivery of engines I’ll need to make this a “blast”! Hopefully the Scouts enjoy it as much as I have in my two week crash course. We build the next couple weeks and launch the 3rd. Can’t wait.

We keep a small bottle of talcum powder in our field kit and find a light dusting keeps the plastic parachute from sticking when folded, also keeps the static away.

I've always used chalk line chalk. It gives a burst of color against the clouds, making it easier to see.

@@turntbyhi-lo3516 Sounds messy, but brilliant, Wonder what would happen if you ground up different colors of child chalk and packed them into release tubes individually inside the rocket, could be a cool multi colored parachute ejection? Got me a thinkin'.

I have been doing it wrong for years!!! This explains why some of my rockets have not deployed the chute properly.

I like all the info. Timing is important for a smooth recovery. I also use plastic chutes, and I always use a little baby powder on the outside and inside and shake it around a little. It always will fully open with no sticking. And do not pack a chute longer than around 3 min. They try to maintain thier shape. When storing a rocket, have nose cone and chute hanging out next rocket or open next to it. Good stuff.

One thing I would add is when the parachute is new take it and crumple it up lay it flat then crumple it up again. Do that a few times and add talcum to the both inside and out. It helps with the static cling.
