Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on RUclips. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

A friend came to me years ago, telling me that she was going to marry her boyfriend because..."it was effortless." What she meant was that she and he did not have to constantly struggle to get to a place of peace and harmony. They could plan work, love, and play without constant fights and struggles. They accepted each other, wanted to give to each other, and tried to do those things that would make their partner happy. There are so few of us that are fortunate to have real love in our lives. Most of us are in relationships with pettiness, fighting, and many long for something better. When we see a couple who, of course is not perfect, but who truly can manage to be happy with each other, despite constant physical closeness and intimacy...wow, so rare. While I'm happy for both of you my deepest wish is that more humans could experience what you both seem to have, instead of your level of intimacy being so rare.
I believe this is what brings the negative comments they receive….people are jealous of their relationship because they either aren’t in one at all, not happy in the one they are in and never experienced this type of relationship…..I did for a couple years with my last partner but things slowly started going south and either he turned into a different person or I was blinded by love

Love the topic. I became a quadriplegic at 19 yrs old. My dating didn't slow down, however it did change. I've always been an open book and I believe good communication is key to any relationship. I've been happily married for 25 yrs and I don't see it changing anytime soon . I also taught Middle School and High school kids for 20 yrs. WOW, the questions they would ask about my disability and sexual function.......Some were very X-Rated. I did my best to answer them and it always led to a better understanding that disabled people aren't that different from non-disabled people. (we all want attention, love, respect, affection, communication, etc .....)

I think it is natural curiosity for people to wonder when they see someone with a disability about intimacy. I appreciate your openness to share. It is, I don’t know the right adjective to say but “nice “to know that Shane has normal functions that make your intimacy fun for you both. I am looking forward to more videos like this because I find them interesting. Bottom line is I’m very very very very happy for you all.

Hannah - I had 13 years of Ballet training and one of the main stretches for doing splits was sitting on the floor and putting the bottoms of your feet together in front of your groin with your knees out to the sides. Pull your feet as close to your body as possible. Drop your knees as close to the floor as possible and put your hands on your knees on each side and gently bounce your knees down toward the floor. This stretches the major ligaments in your groin which is what you need to stretch to do splits. Practice this feet flat together as close to your body as possible, with your knees out to the sides, bouncing them toward the floor gently every day until you can hold your knees down completely parallel to the floor. You should find yourself able to do a split at that point! Good luck, as go slowly so you don’t TEAR the ligaments!😊🙏🏼💕
We called these butterflies! I was hoping someone had commented on the best techniques. I would add sitting in a straddle position and trying to lay your chest flat to the floor, between your knees as another exercise.
yesss thank you! ligaments take wayyyy longer to heal than muscles cuz they get less blood flow so please go slow and be careful with the hamstring stretches; no yoga butt for Hannah!
That's a butterfly, I can do it perfectly but I can't do a split :(
In martial arts class we would also put our but up against the wall, facing the wall with our legs up the wall. Then you just slowly let the weight of your legs move thenm into a side split position. Worked for me!
I always appreciate people who are open about this stuff. I’m autistic and VERY naturally curious so people often feel as though i’m overstepping when really it’s just coming from a place of pure curiosity and intrigue. Love how open you guys are!

There are two sides to people’s curiously, one comes from a place of judgement and insincerity, while the other comes from a place of curiosity and education. Thank for talking about this openly and teaching so many people about how love is not physical, and when it has to be, it doesn’t care what it looks like. Additionally, I have been watching you guys for almost a decade and your relationship has always inspired me, and it has nothing to do with being abled or not. And one last thing, humanity is so upsets with sex like it’s the key to the universe. Sex is so overblown. It’s important, no doubt but not vital. Even with conception, people have children without even being physical. There are so many ways couples can be intimate without physicality. My boyfriend and I are perfectly able and last week we were talking about how, ‘even if we could never have sex again, we would still choose each other’ the connection goes beyond physicality. Having had a brief (6 months) relationship with someone similar to Shane's disability my first experience with intimacy was awkward. I was very young at the time and I was not mature enough to see the bigger picture of the relationship. So I just smile when I see all these questions come up about your intimacy "challenges". When you really love a person none of this even matters. It is just different from the norm.
While many cannot imagine such a relationship, it is the kind of bond that they will never understand, regardless of how you try to convey it to your viewers.
There won't be any faithful relationship without sex, it's a need in us human, we are created in pairs for that reason, these two are just bullshit fooling naive people like you 🤣🤣

Libido difference in a couple is workable when it's small enough, so they can find a middle ground where the two peoplw are happy. If the sex drive is too different, it usually causes a problem. That's why asexual people often struggle in (romantic) relationships with "normally" sexual people. (Asexuality doesn't mean the lack of sex drive, but the lack of attraction, which means lack of will to have sex with another person)
This is just one of the "technical" issues that a couple needs in order for the relationship to work. Fortunately for you, the only issue you had was the distance, and you knew from the beginning that you could solve it by moving to live together at some point.

Why do you sometimes call sex "intimacy" and sometimes "sex"? You know intimacy comes in many forms :) and sometimes I'm not sure if you're talking about intimacy in general or about sex.

Was it obvious for you that your relationship would be monogamic, or you needed a minute to consider it? that obviously applies to previous relationships too.
Of course what I said in the first paragraph can be different in non-monogamic relationships (sexually open or polyamorous).

I very much appreciate the videos on this topic that you've done. I'm not disabled, nor is my wife, but it's good that you're willing to address the topic in an honest and clear manner. Along with all of the other content on your channel it shows that a person with a disability is not a 1-dimensional person, but is a person who can experience the full range of life.

You know, after viewing a lot of your videos, including those in this series, I don’t think anyone questions Shane’s functionality. It’s the logistics that people question. Not necessarily anyone’s business but it would offer some more insight on how this physical part works.

And I saw one where they were being interviewed and she stripped clothing off herself and Shane after every question. I didn't get that at all. In more than half of the ones I've seen, Hannah is flexing. I don't understand that either if this channel is just about an inter-abled couple.

I really admire the way you protect your privacy, and I am not saying that sarcastically. You must get such invasive, "But HOW does IT work? Can you walk us through it with dolls and be really explicit?" questions ALL the time (because people are invasive as 🤬) and the fact that you have very firmly set the boundary of, "Yes, we have an intimate life. Yes, it works. And yes, that is as graphic as we will get." and remained consistent is so refreshing. You have privacy, you don't share EVERYTHING. And you do it respectfully-- you know people are curious, but that's your boundary. I really like it, and applaud you for how you've approached this topic. 😊

I wish people were smarter. Why would anyone question this relationship?? I’ve been here a very long time. Shane and Hannah are the typical married couple. I watch because they’re funny and smart and they love each other. Not because of Shane’s disability and Hannah being his person. I just love both of them!!!

@tinashort9098 You answered your own question. You've been here a long time, many people probably haven't. In the year 2023 how often do you see a beautiful woman with a man who is completely disabled and has a body like his. She also probably has to take care of him a lot which would be a huge turn off for many people. Most women are attracted to confident and capable men and not so much the men who are physically incapable. So naturally, many people may think that maybe he is doing better than her financially and she's with him for that reason. And to be honest, I'm not sure how it is that she gets turned on by him. I'm sure that she loves him but being turned on is something totally different. I think it's quite natural for people to have many questions about their relationship as it is highly unusual.
Also, everyone can go ahead and be offended and curse me or whatever, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm speaking the truth and it's just reality. And for what it's worth, I dislike that our world is this way more than many people and wish people cared more about what's on the inside. The truth is most people don't.

I think people who are disabled know better than most, even from a young age, what specifically will work or not for them logistically concerning intimacy. And I feel like many of us are more comfortable sharing such information with any/everyone. I guess I’m saying, the lack of a filter is just part of the territory.
Exactly. And like every couple on earth; it is always an evolving and changing dynamic. What worked in an marriage at age 22 may be very different at 42 or 62 … we are all sexual beings and so many things affect intimacy. Sex begins with the brain!
Hey! youre doing great on those splits!!! :) Ive been able to do them my whole life because i have hyper-mobile joints, but ive taught SEVERAL friends to do it over the years and some were WAY further than you from the splits and still got there! I think youre at a great starting point though! Also randomly stretching throughout the day (like a thigh stretch when waiting for coffee, or a toe touch when getting up for a glass of water) really goes a long way :) Good luck!
Here is a question for you - once Hannah is pregnant, how are you going to handle physical transfers that Hannah currently does? I believe a pregnant person is given weight lifting caps that I am sure Shane will exceed. Is Shane’s mom going to move it during the pregnancy to help or will you hire a live in nurse, etc? Pls, if Hannah needs a C-Section (which sounds frightening and sounds awful but is common) she will have even more strict weight lifting limits. My daughter-in-law couldn’t even lift her newborn for the first 6 weeks or so.
Why couldn't she lift her baby after a c section? I had a 9lbs 2 Oz baby girl and I lifted her with no problem and I to had a c section....
Doctors recommend you don't lift more than around 5 lbs after a c section...there are so many layers in your body healing from the surgery that heavy lifting might stress
They have already discussed this topic several times. Liz can help but also they will hire a caregiver

I had a boyfriend in a wheelchair. He was paralyzed from the waist down. It just didn't work out because him as a person wasn't feeding my soul. We are still friends n never had an issue w intimacy ❤

When in college/university at SWMS IN MN. a a/b female ( friend with benefits) & myself (disabled) started a on campus discussion group about sexuality with disabled people. As word spread around campus both able bodied students & more disabled students began to attend. We then became a open sexually discussion group. Included films & ligature. An yes some open minds with positive attitudes followed by dating &. Hook-up’s. Hannah & Shane you are excellent role models as to life liberty ,love,& happiness. So many people can benefit from your life as a couple.

I'm surprised as someone (you) who has a disability and probably has been rejected for superficial reasons that you would be comfortable with using someone else's daughter and letting her use you through hook up culture. yes sex feels good but you honestly as a person deserve so much more. to have someone love and know your body and have eternal love for you. meaningless sex goes out the window the minute you make love with you husband or wife. sex is so much deeper than pleasure

Shane, how do you handle the emotional aspect of not being able to hold Hannah in your arms like a conventional relationship? Hannah do you miss not having the feeling of a strong mans arms around you? You obviously love each other very much and have to be creative. Do you ever feel that Hannahs needs aren't being met considering your limited mobility. Some people don't like to be touched a lot, and prefer a more emotional relationship? Hope your blessed with baby new soon!

i am recovering from bowel surgery after cancer, and the experience has really opened my eyes to so many challenges that I only temporarily struggle to overcome, for some people challenges are permanent. Simply picking something up off the floor, for example.

This video answers zero questions that people respectfully, really have. Such as, a big part to intimacy is touch and looks, is it difficult to be turned on at times due to his appearance and fact that you have to completely do his moving for him? It isn't a mean question, just something I noticed a lot of people asking and rightfully so. Also, is viewers aren't as dumb as you may think. I definitely understand where you were coming from about being nervous when you're with somebody new for the first time. Feeling insecure about your body and what not. At least that's how it was for me being a female. But the person that I am involved with is extremely patient and understanding and actually strives to help me overcome all my insecurities. Which he has already helped me with a bunch. I never liked people seeing my feet before because my toes are not completely straight. But I let him see them and he didn't even notice. Now I'm comfortable with that around him. We are both very sexual people and have a lot in common in that department. It also helps because of the fact that we've known each other since we were teenagers. I always had a thing for him, and years later after he was divorced, he reached out to me on Facebook and we instantly reconnected and things became romantic pretty fast. Which I was not expecting at all. You just never know and when there is chemistry there is chemistry. They're always has been between him and I. And I couldn't care less about anybody thinks about us

There’s definitely something else. No disrespect meant. But to sell an idea that it’s all about love just doesn’t make sense. If it’s a business partnership masquerading as a marriage, nothing wrong with that. They’re both adults and competition in social media is cutthroat, so a unique idea must be used. I had a friend in his 60's who could do the splits. He was a black belt in karate and often did his stuff, starting with stretching in parks. He would do the splits and lay on is stomach in that pisition. He once asked a couple young women to walk on his back. They did😮

I have a good question..Being that you take care of him and know everything about him ie. taking him to bathroom, cleaning him, washing him, having to do everything…housecleaning,cooking etc are you worried you will resent him and how does that effect sex. I know you love n adore him and of course it can’t be helped but I would think eventually you will maybe feel like you missed out in your young years. God has given him such a great gift in you. ** I’ve only been married 25yrs but I can tell you if my husband were in his position I would have a nurse help the majority of the time. I would never ever leave him but I would still want him to have individual privacy.
