You’re a great bass player Kevin, what little negativity there is in these comments is just a testament to what killed traditional jazz. Everyone has some opinion on what you should have done to make your cover valid. “cool now play the changes,” “cool now do a solo,” “there’s a guitar track? Play over it dude!” God forbid someone play a melody without consulting the jazz overlords for their blessing first🙄
Which is why most people can't seem to play it well, except for the sexy fast horn type parts. By the way, to which branch of traditional jazz are you referring? Pre or post Bebop?
Are you serious? This guy comes in with some ego pleasing BPM nonsense, doesn’t actually play it that cleanly, and you say it’s his critics’ attitude that killed trad jazz?!
any tips/resources on how you learned your thumb index technique? been looking into thumb plucking and evan marien's technique too, but a lot of resources are primarily index middle. would be grateful if you could share on the differences between them and why you play thumb index too, love the playing.
your picking hand flows really nice and freely, I've been thinking about having and using that kinda technique but now that I actually see somebody do it, the path before me is clear-er. thank you for sharing! :D oh and now I read your technique apparently comes from a necessity, interesting
I have a condition called focal dystonia and lost function of my middle finger, so I had to relearn using my thumb and index. I made a video talking about it here on my channel, please check it out if you’re interested. Also, thank you for the kind words. It really means a lot.
@@FreebybassSorry to hear that! I assume that you already know, but did you know that Scott Devine also has focal dystonia? He uses a special glove that allows him to play freely. He made a couple of videos about it. Not that you need it, really, because you play cleaner and faster than almost everyone haha. Also - amazing playing!
Wow, man - that is so damn inspiring. I have a somewhat recent MS diagnosis that affects my dexterity and to watch you absolutely shred this bass is the best@@Freebybass
The "head' is the melody. This can mean the full song, a specific fragment (usually the main melodic statement) or other forms, depending on the tune, arrangement, etc.
I don't even know what I just saw lol, were you using a pick there or was that all done with upstrokes and downstrokes with your thumb or were you alternating picking between thumb and finger?? Top player by the looks of things anyway so upload you doing some walking bass and soloing over it next!!!
Thanks for the kind words. You are correct I’m using my thumb and index finger. It’s a modified version of traditional finger style but since I don’t have use of my middle finger, I moved it to the other two digits.
Definitely didn’t miss it. It got played as an upstroke with my finger. I can be tough to see because of the position of my hand and the fact that there is very little movement from the other fingers. Not nearly as obvious as the thumb movement. I hope that this helps.
@@peanutbutter21222 Just stumbled upon his vid and saw that he apparently missed that upbeat G on the open G string but it's dreadfully loud and clear in the audio so I say he either A) missed it during playing or B) finger-synced to a pre-recorded take. Either way, it's an error in the video. At least THAT note is not live. That's all I'm saying. Why do you care so much about someone making an accurate observation?
@@Freebybass Well, I must respectfully disagree because at the time that note hits, your left hand pinky is still sliding the G string back from that last chord. So, like I said to another person in this vid comment section, either you are playing to a pre-recorded track or you missed that and punched it in but since you are sliding and there's no slide sound in the audio, I'm concluding you are merely finger syncing to your pre-recorded version which is quite good, regardless of whether it's live or not. That's my opinion by watching the video and hearing the audio. thanks!
@@Freebybass don't think it's hating 😘 I just think it's kinda silly to focus on playing a tune at 300 bpm and emphasize it in the title, especially when it's a jazz tune that's you're supposed to improvise over. Kind of like those guys in the gym that stack all the weights on the barbell, do half a rep and take a photo of it. Not hating on them at all, but do think they're silly.
I've just seen so many bass videos and bassists play the head of Donna Lee, Giant Steps Trane solo, Teen Town and no one ever plays "the bass", just Jaco-y stuff. I did not tell what do, I just suggested strongly "to try...". You can do whatever you want; even the great Anthony Jackson doesn't walk that great. Great jazz bass walking is merely a bass thing, I guess.@@Freebybass
You are correct. Playing the head to a tune in unison with guitar is a completely different thing than playing a groove. The goal would be to lock in with the guitar which I hope that I achieved. There are other videos that focus on groove, but this one is not that. Thanks for listening.
