- Detectives, from the police taskforce investigating historical child sexual abuse, recorded the interview conducted in the conference room of a hotel on 19 October 2016. Pell did not take to the witness stand in his subsequent trial but the video was screened.
This prosecutor is awful! Now that Pell is out, we learn that none of the people who were supposed to be around at the time of the offenses, were ever questioned.
Umm… He was a detective, not a prosecutor. He’s also a very smart man

I have never seen a lawyer look so nervous.
What? Why would a lawyer be nervous???? If anything, he would be excited he has a big brief coming in
Just to confirm... this was *after mass* ?
He's sitting in jail right now and pursuing final appeal before the High Court of Australia. Otherwise I admired his achievement in the Church to be #3 at the Vatican, which was great for a fellow Aussie. Now his achievement is being the highest Catholic official to be convicted and go to jail for sexual abuse of the young.

Disgraceful miscarriage of justice.
Trust me this was no miscarriage of justice,he is guilty as sin. Watch the 60 minutes report on him and see him get caught in a lie of epic proportions. They always deny it.
Carl Hamill you should read the entire appeal judgement and the dissenting bit about compounding improbabilities. The likelihood of the 13 established improbabilities not disputed by the prosecution all occurring was one in many thousands. That essentially equating to an irrefutable reasonable doubt. The trial judge erred by not instructing the jury that they did not need to satisfy themselves it was possible for Pell to do it, and therefore find him guilty, but only that it was likely he did it beyond any reasonable doubt. Essentially, the defence botched it. They should never have repeatedly said it was impossible for Pell to do it. Richter argued a bad case and an innocent many is in jail. All they had to do was say the following thirteen improbabilities must give you cause to have reasonable doubt. Just shows how imperfect the law can be.
There are many circles of hell.
He has to read from a script! Never believe in fairytales... remember neverland! These people that hide behind religion or stardom etc believe they have a power that protects them. It’s about time we took that power away and saw them for what they can really be!
Further, his lawyer is a dope, and was incompetent for not objecting.

I have always disliked Pell and his traditionalist family values gobbledegook. BUT his sentencing was a travesty of justice that should not have happened in a democratic country with an independent judiciary. I have no idea whether or not he buggered boys, however, the evidence was impossibly slim and insubstantial and could not justify a conviction.

By the way he responded to the questions - guilty. By the evidences - not guilty. Why the boys were there …why they did it? They wanted it. Overall - lack of evidences and lack of any harm, a consensual pleasure.

I don't understand how he was convicted. He was never alone with anyone to commit these eleged crimes.
How could you find Pell guilty after watching this? 1) the wine that the choir boys were supposed to be drinking from WASN'T IN PELL'S SACRISTY, it was the priest's one. 2) the wine was kept in a SAFE under LOCK AND KEY. 3) It was after SUNDAY MASS, when the Archbishop is greeting parishioners out front 4) the archbishop is accompanied at ALL TIMES. 5) Pell and the Choir Boys were all wearing ROBES; layers of them. Getting these off to engage in sex would be the MOST AWKWARD SEX EVER! 6) The door was left OPEN. There were people COMING AND GOING at all times! and also we know that 7) the other alleged victim was asked multiple times if he were ever abused, and he said NO I WASN'T! AND 8) THERE ARE NO OTHER WITNESSES, NO CORROBORATING EVIDENCE, just the words of one man against another. And may I say, Pell seems like a man hearing this FOR THE FIRST TIME. All this leads me to believe that PELL IS WRONGFULLY ACCUSED, WRONGFULLY CONVICTED, AND WRONGFULLY IMPRISONED. He MUST be set free upon appeal and the charges and sentence QUASHED.
Whilst witnesses did confirm that Pell was outside the Cathedral after mass, the witnesses ONLY place him there from between 1-3 minutes, after which he goes back inside. So whilst yes, he was outside, he wasn't there long, and it doesn't provide a defence for him, as he was back in the Cathedral shortly after mass, where he could have caught them.
Not only that Pell's behaviour, and his answers are not consistent with that of an innocent man.
And to assume the arch bishop was NEVER alone within the Cathedral is just plain naive.
@@PBMS123 Its not for the prosecution or anyone to say it COULD have happened; they have to show, PROVE, that it DID happen, BEYOND ALL REASONABLE DOUBT. Did that happen? No. Not at all. The accuser must have been very convincing in his video deposition, but we don't have access to that. Even the media who went to the trial every day didn't see that. That's the big missing piece here.
@@Yobbie72 Well it did because the Jury returned a verdict of guilty. And given there aren't any transcripts from the trial, and the only publicised part was the sentencing, you are wrong to say they didn't prove to the criminal standard. Because to a Jury of peers they did, and they subsequently found him guilty by UNANIMOUS verdict.
I am all about innocent until proven guilty, all about beyond a reasonable doubt standard. But he has been proven and found guilty in a court of law by a jury of 12.
I was simply refuting the points YOU MADE in attempt to say these didn't happen. You said he couldn't have done it because he was outside, I refuted that point, and that point alone. I'm not saying it proves his guilt, but that it certainly nullifies your assertion that he could not have done it for those reasons, which are easily disproven.
@@PBMS123 The first jury could not reach a verdict. It's reported that it was 10 to 2 who wanted to return a NOT GUILTY verdict. So while the second jury might have been swayed by the testimony, the majority of the first were not. And no new evidence was presented at the second trial. The accuser wasn't even brought back: they just played the video tape of his cross examination. So that doesn't make me feel confident that this was a beyond reasonable doubt situation.
@@Appokoros-oy6ui Take your pick. Is it the high grade or the low grade? Could have gone either way. Thankfully a judge, and not a jury, will consider all the evidence upon appeal and determine whether or not a verdict of 'guilty beyond all reasonable doubt'was a legitimate one.

I can be one of the witness. I have written three times to cardinal George Pell while he was in Assessment prison to mention that I can be one of the witness for him. Somehow I haven't received any reply from him. I always saw cardinal George Pell greeting people after Sunday 11am Mass. It was a high mass, very busy and tourists keep coming. I also witnessed that he didn't give up his routine of greeting people even there was a big protest against him by the rainbow (when he was an Archbishop of Melbourne). I stand by what I have seen and I am sure that Cardinal Pell is an innocent man. His conviction is full of doubt! It is baseless. This is a false accusation!
Unfortunately denial is the weakest form of defense, and he even offered bribes to victims to keep them quiet. These predators hide behind the veil of priesthood thinking it will give them protection...but in the end it catches up with them and they then have to pay the piper!
@@carlhamill5203 There has been huge propaganda against the cardinal , which is untrue, from police task forces. social media, and political forces against the cardinal for many years ahead and it has deeply poisoned public opinion. Up till now his conviction still unclear. But it is very clear that no one was safe if conviction is based on sole witness whom nobody knows about his historical affairs. Is he a real victim? Is he a church hater? is he a mental illness? a drug addicted user or is he a desperate digger for his own personal gain?

They initially claimed this was after choir practise, and then discovered Pell didn't live in the cathedral and wouldn't have been there for any choir practise. D'oh.
They had no idea where Pell would be after Sunday mass - greeting parishioners at the front of the cathedral (or being part of a procession after special occasion masses). D'oh.
They had no idea which sacristy the wine was kept in even, or that it was guarded. They didn't know about the alterations to the priests sacristy. They also thought the wine was red, it was white. D'oh.
Pell was convicted without a shred of evidence, on the say so of a single person (who no doubt has earned his 30 pieces of silver), without any corroboration whatsoever, in what would have made a hilarious Benny Hill sketch. That's what the legal fraternity in Vic call 'beyond a reasonable doubt'!!!
This is Australia's Carl Beech affair, and one can only hope the High Court Appeal later this month will finally do the right thing and exonerate an entirely innocent man.
Shame on you VicPol. Shame on you Milligan and you savages at the ABC. Shame on the blithering idiots of the second jury. And shame on the two Appeal court judges that upheld this ridiculous conviction.
Well shame on you,you belittle the victims who are individuals going up against the might of the Catholic church...not a small thing to do,and they are all resolute in their recollections. George Pell was a lying scumbag who got,in the end, what he deserved and may he rot and be raped in the 4 walls he is now contained in. Remember Pell was convicted by a jury, and his appeal turned down by 3 judges who reviewed the evidence and there was no doubt of his guilt. Given the history of predator priests in the church, and Pells involvement with a number of these now convicted priests you can't have any doubt he did what he did!
@@carlhamill5203 His appeal was not rejected by three judges, it was in fact rejected by two and upheld in dissent by Justice Weinberg, Australia's top criminal justice, formerly of the Federal Court. You are welcome to read Justice Weinberg's scathing review not of the jury, but of the Crown case which misled the jury and a tacit rebuke of the reasoning of the justices in the majority. The High Court is perfectly within its jurisdiction to uphold Justice Weinberg's decision over that of the other two justices. This information alone hardly supports your ethusiastic, zealous invective. But it's easier - and all too common - to purge, than to think and reason. Thank god we have due process and an appellate hierarchy rather than mob justice, which amounts simply to lynching.
