I think Ellen's were all pretty much standard Slang terms in those times. Most Americans would know flossing badonak donk and shawty or shorty. For God's sake they all have songs with the names in them lolol.
@@TheBasher-_- "Most Americans" wouldn't know 'flossing' in that sense. That's super obscure. Most wouldn't have known shawty either, only most people of a certain age group.
Like 35+ year olds from Europe? You guys should know better than anyone that 'American' covers A LOT of places and a lot of people. Britain is so small they can be more homogeneous 😂 @@vigilante8374
hi everyone, I'm doing a research on this video and I was wondering what does it mean (seconds 1:52-1:58) " so we're tied" " tied...nothing". English is not my first language... so thank you in advance!
Ah, yes! Hello, fellow language learner. 😁 To be tied means for both people to have the same amount of points on something (especially in a game or sport), with neither one winning or losing. In this case, Hugh Laurie and Ellen DeGeneres both failed, so they tied. I hope that makes sense, and best of luck to you on your English-learning journey! 😊
Badonkadonk and shawty are definitely used here. Badonkadonk is less used but everyone I know knows what it is. Shawty is very popular though? The only one that wasn't is flossing, which is used for other meanings but not used by her definition
this vid was shown to us by teacher and now BA-DONKA-DONK is well known by 7th graders only. Though teacher discourages us from using it.. WE LAUGHED AT THE VID. #BaDonkaDonk
How can he mispronounce half of these words (like saying shinwag instead of chinwag)? I thought he was an actor. Maybe he had some dental procedure or something, but this is atrocious. And also she pronounces shawty like shawdy. It's just strange that they can't English, in this video. The whole thing's off.
"That's A FANTASTIC word." - Hugh Laurie
"Bob's your uncle" is the slang phrase that made me smile the most while learning English Slang.
Ellen’s American slang isn’t really widely used stuff, but Hugh is using legitimate British slang terms that probably most people in the UK know.

@@TheBasher-_- But they weren’t commonly used expressions. Hugh’s were.
@@TheBasher-_- yeah it’s pretty rare for me to hear shawty outside of rap/hip hop music nowadays

I never heard of "flossing" in the sense Ellen used it.
That’s what she and Portia do
"That's A FANTASTIC word." I immediately had Dr. House in my mind.
We watched that at university in our 2nd English lecture about differences between BE and AE - was so much fun haha
I’m in my secon église lesson and we have to watch it 💀😂😂
Fantastic. I only knew all the British bits. :-D
I'm American, and I never heard of "flossing" Is that Ghetto speak? Badankadonk?! Shawty?! Yes. It is.
Ghetto speak ? What the fuck is that supposed to mean ?
Oh, I never get tired of watching this)
I like this show

@@adventureswithaurora thank you very much!!
@@elisadellarossa1106 You're welcome!
What does Hugh Laurie say (0:40) just after Ellen says "that was to show you how wrong you were"? Thanks
“Right, that’s kind of rubbing it in, that’s sort of aggressive, isn’t it, yah, yah”
I think she was making them up. Never heard of any of her so-called American slang, whereas his are in common English usage.

I’m American and I got all the Britishisms but only 2 Americanisms.
Tied is another Americanism Hugh! You're drawing
I didn't know any word ... You'll said me" the explain can be because I'm french" ... And I may say "yes" ...
shorty
Shin wag would've confused me too.
Who came from American vs British idioms from interactive English?
you'd stop flossing it is, right? haha cool!
Hugh does not look comfortable with her, you can tell by the way he looks around.
"Flossing" means showing off...? Not in the dimension I inhabit: never heard of this
Same for ba donkadonk. Non existant.
2.00 lol
Why on Earth would he mispronounce chin?
03:22 song name please ?
Deipatrous A slight lisping speech impediment
It was a teasing, playful attempt to throw-off & confuse Ellen, as a response to her 'Klaxon' comments from a moment before! 😄

"Low" by Flo Rida
okay but who tf pronounces shawty the way ellen did
Sounds like sharty, which is someone who does a shit and fart at the same time?
It's "shorty" not "shawty"
people...I'm trying to learn proper English here...so please!😀
i didn't know House was Brittish
He does that accent quite well :)
Well, that's just weird because he's British and he's making the American accent very well.
Check friend airplane scene where hes talking with Rachel iirc
He was also the classic Bertie Wooster in the show “Jeeves and Wooster.” Stephen Fry was in that as well.
Ellen travels in different circles than most Americans, and isn't a good representative for what AE is...
Ellen used to be funny before she went over the top LGBLT masculine

Us British r the best
We dont fucking say chin wag.
Yes we do
Not as much these days but it's still used.
I do
I do, live in London
he twice mispronounced "ch" as "sh" [in chuffed and chinwag]. his pronunciation is chit.
