    Wow that's a pretty scary outlanding. Good that you're sharing it as we can all learn from each other's mistakes and prevent accidents from happening. Everyone risks getting into an accident. At first I was thinking that you would be landing straight, which would also have been a possibility if realising too late that an outlanding was inevitable. I think following the basic rules on outlanding decision making and not deviating from those no matter what the task is would have avoided this situation. In videos on youtube I regularly see more experienced pilots who participate in competitions bending the safety rules. I think pilots who have a considerable level of experience are at risk of believing that experience overcomes all types of risks but unfortunately that's not always true.

    Fair play for posting the video and acknowledging your errors. Means people like me can learn from your mistakes so thanks.

    My best congratulation - you are finally safe on the ground and your glider can be flown again, so out-landing can be reviewed as "good":-) But I was personally quite surprised by the fact that you did straight-in approach without out-landing field visual pre-check - it is not a good practice for glider-pilot. Than at quite low altitude you did 180" turn - I guess so, because of the wind direction - you went all the time with tailwind and just before landing you need to change into headwind - this final 180" turn was quite low and dangerous as for me. But as I've already mentioned at the beginning - you are safe on the ground and it is the most important thing about gliding;-) Stay high and fly safe!:-)

      Thank You for your insight and comment, have you red my own comment below video ? this was race and this field is near my airfield ;) Cheers

      I mean engaging in a 180° turn 30-50m above ground certainly isn't a good practice. The fact that the pilots knows the area and/or is in a competition doesn't change much.

    I don't understand the decision making that is displayed with many of these outlanding videos. It seems that everyone ignores the concept of giving up about staying up at some altitude, say 800 feet AGL, and committing to an outlanding. Then, perform a normal pattern with only slight variations based on exactly what you see in the field.

    • @MrBerzulis
      @MrBerzulis  3 года назад

      It is a basic concept, not really applicable in final glide. as soon as we start fly tasks we realize 800 feet AGL far from your home and unknown area differs from 800 feet in your known area.

    I personally would have probably deviated to the left for the little forming Cu at 4:18 near the top left of the screen

    Which arrival height for the target airfield did your soaring computer show all the time?
    When you aimed for e.g. 200 meters, and you were too fast (as it obviously was), that arrival height would get lower all the time and the computer should have shown it. And then you could have adjusted your speed to get a better glide path and make it to the airfield.

    If a pilot did that in the UK , straight in and land , the glider could well be a brush and shovel job.

    With a tailwind you can slow down to minimum sink and let the wind take you home, as likely the pilots who overflew you did. Once the computer shows you getting above glideslope, then you can speed up. Better a 100 m high than a couple km short.
    Yes, I suddenly clued in that my computer was showing a final glide with no safety margin and very quickly picked a field and turned final at maybe 100 m 2 km away. The next software update provided for a safety height - circuit altitude for me.
