How To Make a New Shirt using An Old Shirt as a Pattern DIY

- I think one of the most rewarding things about sewing, is making yourself clothing! IF you are new to sewing, or don't feel like messing with a store-bought pattern, give this a try! If I like the fit of a shirt but won't wear it anymore, I will repurpose it!
You can absolutely do this without taking the shirt apart, but I like to have the original pieces in case I want to make my own. I can do a video showing how to do a "rub off" pattern as well if you like.
I used 2 yards of the georgette fabric, and a quarter of a yard of the3 stabilizer. Joann has a large selection of stabilizer fabrics! most of them are by the brand Pellon I believe.
I THINK this is all of the steps, but feel free to let me know if I missed something! I filmed this aq few months back for tiktok, and dint quite film all that I wished I would have, but I think I made it work!
The steps written out are as follows!
-Seam rip Buttons
-Seam rip plackets
-Seam Rip collar/ collar stand
-Seam side/underarm seam
-Seam rip sleeve cap
-Seam Rip shoulder seams
-Seam rip yolk.
(if you reverse these steps, its also the order in which you sew it back together!)
- Cut out your new fabric pieces, making sure to follow the grain lines of the original shirt
-Stitch Back Yoke/Press/Overlock
-
Stitch shoulders/ press/overlock
-Stitch Shirt front to back at shoulders/Press/Overlock
-Stitch sleeve cap in/Overlock
-Stitch under arm down side of shirt/Press/Overlock
-Fuse 1.5" stabilizer( by ironing) on front of shirt where plackets will go.
-Fold/Press plackets to mimic original shirt.
-Topstitch Placket
-Fuse interfacing to collar pieces, and stitch together
-Turn collar pieces inside out and press something narrow into the corners to turn out correctly
-Pin collar in between collar stand pieces/ Stitch/ Flip inside out and press
-Pin collar stand to neck of shirt/ sew.
-On opposite side, turn seam allowance under to match other side of the collar stand that you just stitched, and press/ pin/ stitch.
-Attach buttons/button holes/ snaps
-Hem sleeves and bottom of shirt
-Enjoy!

me, who has never touched a sewing machine but enthralled by his voice and talent: 👁️👄👁️
Once you get into sewing... it is quite addictive
@@ShayNeaNea31
Fully agree but I cannot believe the mess on the floor I have to clean on a daily basis
Amen!
Me, who has a sewing machine but don't know what to make.
@@yrruhm7063 yaasss me too😂😂
Only time i ever used it was to ruin things and not fix them🤷🏻♀️😂
If Gunnar ever decides to do a Fairy God Mother series where he drops in on kids that for whatever reason can't go to prom or women that have had wedding dress disasters before the wedding happens and does his magic... it would be a HUGE hit. I would pay to watch that.
hellyes
@@NotChefCook the fact that also translates to 'is correct' is gold
I thought the title said "how to make a shirt out of a shirt" and I was very confused 😂
And because of this ive altered the name lolllllll good to know😘
@@GunnarDeatherage there wasn't anything wrong with it im just illiterate 🤚🥲
And all the time i was thinking why he is not using the old shirt in it😐🤣
Gunnar, I just think you are the best. I'm terrible at sewing, I have a persnicketty, cheap old sewing machine, the patience of a honey badger and the comprehension skills of a single-celled organism, but you make me want to be better. Your videos are made in a very friendly, non intimidating way and everything you make makes me want to weep because it's so lovely. I'm so glad you exist
This comment made my entire day!
Yeah, what she said. Dead on.
Yeah he is the best
Well ok Ava but you are gorgeous and insanely funny . There is THAT . 😍 Oh and I agree , Gunnar is a gem .
Wish I was a singled cell organism
No need to work and pay bills just
sew all day
I think that Gunnar’s voice is one of the most soothing and calming voices I have ever heard.
Omg, that nail polish is divine!
🤩✨
99.9% sure all of his nail polishes are from an Indy Brand called Holo Taco, made by simply Nailogical’s Cristine Rotenberg (she’s Canadian but makes and ships from the US). Super high quality and extremely durable, non-gel polishes you can do at home. Every single video of Gunnar has them matched to his creations.
I found this channel on accident like a week ago and I'm slowly but surely becoming obsessed. Seriously this guy has some major talent.
Ive never sewn a thing in my life! I have no current interest in making my own clothes. But i cannot stop watching this guys videos! He's super talented & his voice is so relaxing to listen to!❤
I couldn't sew to save my life, but I love watching you do your fabric magic, it's so inspiring. Thank you! 💙
I love your message, exactly not all started as pro. Everyone started from the beginning with trials, errors and mistakes,we learned from it. Im teaching myself from youtube and I also learn from every dress i make .Its hard how to execute the dresses i visualize but i take the challenge and made myself happy and proud everytime its done. And don't forget its ok to rest if you get frustrated, take a break and after that you're good to go again. Thank you for inspiring people like me, thank you for your talent and your videos and sharing them to us. 🤗😊❤️❤️❤️❤️
YES YES YES!!!! sewing can be SO frustrating! I 100% have my moments and those breaks are very necessary! RUclips can be such a great tool right? I have learned my fair share from RUclips!
@@GunnarDeatherage OMG!!! 😍😍😍😍. Yas true!! Where i found yours and loved your creations!!! Yup even pros like you get it but it's so satisfying looking at the dress after it's made then a tap on the shoulder and say "wow! i made that!!! " it's such a great reward after all! 😍😍😍😍😍
I made my own hoodie just the way I want it and I love love love it. Patience is key. Take breaks. I'm also entirely self taught though youtube, internet tutorials, and making a LOT of mistakes. I take breaks when I need them and listen to something in the background so it doesn't feel like it takes hours of work.
Remember its a process and dont get hung up on the finish. Revel in your own “ness” and take note to notice how it feels when you conquer a task. That compels me more than anything and it makes mistakes become ‘learning incidents”. Lol enjoy it...it will last you a lifetime.
YOU LOOK SO GOOD IN THE SHIRT! DAMN! THE TALENT AND THE BEAUTY PLEASEEE
Press everything flat and beautiful- I love it when you say that 💗😄
I’m someone who always had the dream to be a self taught designer or like teach myself how to sew, use a sewing machine and makes clothes and feel proud and confident wearing it, you honestly inspire me a lot and I’ve definitely learn things I didn’t know before
I have been having a serious relationship
with sewing I fell in love when my daughter plonked sewing machine on my
lap and I have been sewing without
missing a day for almost a year learning I tube tutorials and now your teachings are so inspiring
I'm impressed that you are self-taught. I tried, with help more than twice and just couldn't get it. Sewing takes skill, and an artsy insight. You should be so proud of yourself.
Not only was the video helpful but you’re soooo nice too! ❤️
The shirt looks amazing! And loving to longer video.🙏🏼
Oh you handsome! Great idea to remake our favourite pieces. 👏🏻🤗
Good morning from the suburbs of Boston.
I taught my niece how to sew and she has created clothing for herself, her family and friends, comicon costumes, and hundreds of face masks at the start of the pandemic when there were none available to the general public. She is also one of your fans and we discuss your tutorials. You have taken over as my niece's teacher and mentor.
As watch your videos and listen to your encouraging words my heart fills with appreciation for your kindness and for sharing your experience and artistry.
Shine on you bright and sparkly diamond.
Much love, Auntie Susie
I love this🥰🥰
I simply love your videos. You are so so talented and lovely. A big shout out to you - you are awesome and please continue your work, every video of yours is gorgeous
when I was 22 I bought some fabric and a pattern to make a shirt. I borrowed my room mates sewing machine. I WAS OUT OF MY MIND - it takes a helluva long time to get proficient at sewing and I really admire the people who can do it. With your magic wand make me able to sew and speak French - well!!!
Gunnar, you are so talented, |I do not think that there are words to describe how powerful your voice and techniques are showing in your videos. I just love the way you use and reuse clothing, fabric and make it so personal. I am sending so much love from Canada for you are the king when it comes to sewing. BTW, I loved the care package you sent to that little boy. Because of you, he is going on the right path as a creator and artist like you.
Thank you so much!! I’ve been looking for a concise shirt making tutorial. This one makes the most sense to me! I love this western chic shirt too !!
Just found your channel and so happy I did! You're extremely talented! I love your work!! Beautiful! ♥️
Me too 😍😍😍
Thank you for the tutorial. The price of patterns from the fabric store makes the idea of using a shirt for a pattern a genuine savings, even though it will take time to disassemble the shirt. I appreciate your attention to detail when using your iron and sewing ham.
SOOOO glad I came across one of these videos!! Now,I'm hooked!! He's adorable and has a great voice!!!
I loved the longer tutorial, thanks! Oh and the shirt looks great.
Gosh I love the shirt you're wearing💓 😘 looking forward to watching this, thank you 💞
I love watching your channel, you’re so positive and what you make is always fabulous
i taught myself to sew when i was about 16. when my mother saw i could figure it out, she started giving me advice. knowing how to sew has really helped me in my life! good job here , dude! you make sewing accessible !
Love your videos. They keep me inspiered.
Thank you for the detailed walkthrough, your tips, and your benevolence! You seem so kind and generous with your talent, which is precious and necessary in the creative world (and all fields!), yet unfortunately often lacking. I'm loving your videos and your encouragement 🧡💛💚
Thank you so much for sharing your creativity and brilliance with us. I come from a long line of women who sew as a passion. I appreciate you so much. 💫
Gunner I am watching this video 2 plus years after you made it. I have watch yours shorty video of current time as my first introduction of what you do. It was fun to see how much you matured in your skills. Continue to be you and produce all your cool patterns!
You are such an inspiration. I never learned to use a machine, but I can hand stitch, I was taught by my grandmother who learned from her mother, my great-grandmother. My mom was the machine sewer in our family, she worked in Paris after the war.
Thank you, thank you! This is the only video I've found so far that actually deconstructs the shirt to use as pattern pieces which is what I was looking for.
You have an amazing talent for patience.. I am a sewer and I know it can be frustrating.. you tackle big bulky designs which amazes me!!
My wife thinks everything you see us great. She loves watching your videos.
The part about the mistakes is a lesson for every random part of life - just make once more and then obce more and then try again 💟 thank You so much
Loved to see the longer videos and hope we get more! :D
Great message and content! I'm still learning to sew and it can be quite frustrating when your finishes aren't perfect, hopefully it will get better! ❤️
Your voice is soothing. I also love how you are not afraid to be thrifty.
His voice is so calming, I could listen to him just talk about anything for hours.
THIS IS SUCH GOOD TIMING!! JUst two days ago I told my mom I hate the sleeves on one of my favourite shirts and I'm going to seam rip them off and add my own sleeves
I really don't care about the DIY stuff, I'm just here for you to make everything flat and beautiful
This is quite literally how I learned how sew! I still do this sometimes as a very proficient seamstress. If I was lucky, and came at ti from the right side, I used to be able to get the surged edge to unravel in one clean pull!!✨✨✨
your so talented. I wish your videos were longer. your voice is amazing
Your stuff is AWESOME!! YOU TAUGHT YOURSELF? WOW, I AM VERY IMPRESSED! (I am NOT impressed because you are a guy though. Lol my dad, and sons (some are about YOUR age) can sew too! I was taught the basics, at age 9 or 10, I got my very first black and gold, converted from treadle machine to electric machine for my 10th birthday. The rest of my sewing, I taught myself. I do believe that much of sewing is also hereditary. My Great Grandma could go "window shopping," go home from her "shopping" and cut the pattern for whatever she wanted from newspaper, and sew it before bed time! I have a ton of "tricks" that I have learned over the years, both, by trial and error and learning from others who sew, as well. You are awesome at sewing and I REALLY love watching your videos! You have given me So many ideas and have inspired me to make some clothes for my kids and Grandbabies. I sure wish you lived on the east coast, instead of Cali. (I used to live at Travis, you Can guess the affiliation I would guess.) I wish you lived on the east coast because I could use a great sewing buddy! Mine is in Nevada now. You know, military life! I have about a BILLION questions for you! I will keep it to only a VERY few for now, though! Were you in the military, as a Gunner? Or is that just a nickname for your brand? That's enough questions for now, I know you are very busy with your sewing, so, I will ask more later! Please, keep making your awesome, inspiring videos!
A joy to watch your designs come into beginning.
Loved this! Your finished shirt is amazing, and you looked like a rock star! I look forward to lots more videos like this!
My own sewing machine is a 60s White Streamliner, perfect name. Bought at a garage sale 35 years ago, not temperamental, will sew through pretty much anything. They were aimed at tailors and seamstresses. I wouldn't trade it.
Your videos are so inspiring and the tutorials you've posted are super helpful. I'm also self-taught but always found making patterns and assembling the collar difficult, which leaves a bunch of my projects unfinished... But you broke it down in a way that's easy to follow and replicate so I can't even express how much I appreciate your channel 💕
I'm sure you have been told this many times, you do every step of the process "beautifully". From that first hint of an idea thru to finished garment. Reinforcing the truth is never a bad thing. Oh, and who wants to wear something that is in EVERYONE else's closet? This is the perfect solution!
I appreciate this so much!!!! I always feel like I have imposter syndrome because I’m self taught, so hearing this is super appreciated!
@@GunnarDeatherage Please don't ever use being self taught to minimize your results. O do want to be clear that I am a "layman in every sense of the word. That being out of the way...1st, Until today I had wondered which college you had attended for design, etc. 2nd, creativity and talent can't be taught. 3rd, teaching oneself allows that creativity and talent way more room to come alive. 4th, lessons, mistakes, etc. are more thoroughly understood and of course committed to memory better if self taught. These are my opinions of course but please know that I have more respect for you & more f as it in your abilities knowing you have done TY his on your own. And I do not give false compliments.
You make such beautiful things! Practice does help but when it is made by you it is special. You are a gifted artist!
Reduce, reuse, recycle!!!! Love you Gunnar!!
I'm so delighted to see you in this video! I love your positivy! Thank you for this tutorial!
Extra nice touch to have the pattern come together so beautifully at the front of your new shirt - very good job.
I love these videos. When I'm going to take a garment apart to make it a pattern, I take a picture of the garment first. I print the picture on paper and then I can write on the back any notes to myself that I think are important while I'm sewing the new garment, like seam allowances or any tricky bit that I figured out while cutting/sewing. The pic with the notes goes into the zip-loc bag with the pattern pieces. The next time I'm flipping through my patterns to make something or I'm looking for a specific pattern, the picture makes it easy to know what pattern is in that bag and the notes remind me of things relevant to that pattern that I may have forgotten when I go to make it this time around.
You have such a gift Gunner. I have to say that I love everything you have ever created. I can't say that to anyone else. Also, your nails are cool. Love the colors. Like cats eyes.
I can't sew but I LOVE LOVE watching your videos❤
Fabulous! Just found your Chan. I’m self taught and I’m still teaching myself. I love that your videos are faster speed.
this entire video made me so happy- i’m definitely gonna try this with the shirts i never wear 😂
You are such an inspiration! Beautiful person inside and out. Thank you.
Gunnar, thank you for inspiring me to start sew my own clothes using my favorite clothes as patterns. You made it all so easy and clear. Inspiring ❤❤❤
You are the best Christmas present everyday of the year! Blessings and thanks!
Loving how your nails always match the garment you are making 😍🥰 all aboit the details!! You're so gifted in so many ways!!!
I really live your content and I'm happy the be able to learn from someone like you 😊
I appreciate your instruction and demo videos so much. They’re inspirational and so are you. Thank you for this.
Thank you for teaching and sharing. You make life better for so many people!
I bought my grandkids a sewing machine, serger, work surface, and other tools. They were irritated they didn't get my mangle lol I did get them Rusty Bensussian's books and some of my interweave press books, and a giant roll of interfacing. Their dad is making forms for them, since they are young teens and will be changing by the minute.
Their mother is very inventive with fashion and design, but can't be around (logistics). The older is trans, and was tired of not finding what they want. The younger is still combining epic weirdness (tutu, cape made of appliqued lace leaves, painted wellies, and a Roman helmet.
You are such a lovely and generous person. Thank you 🙏🏼
I love your positive outlook! You’re so talented and your artwork is SO beautiful! Thank you for sharing all your beauty with us!!
😭 can i just say, thank you!
Growing up I would spend hours attempting to make stuff (my mom wasn't to happy about the sheets) nothing ever came out right but yesterday I made a whole top 😌 you make sewing make sense
Omg I love watching you and all of the unique pieces you create. So much talent!
Honesty your such a vibe
I love watching your videos! My dream would to be able to sew like you. I can only imagine how fulfilling it must be to take a pattern or a vision and make it come to life. I will keep trying and you keep putting out videos because you are inspiring!
You're so positive! And your clothes look great.
Thank you for giving so much confidence to others
Shirts are my favorite challenge in sewing, I really enjoy making them. I like your process, it turned out great.😊
My mom made us clothes when we were little. Especially because store clothes didn't fit me properly. Sometimes she'd fix store clothes for me.
Your clothes fit right custom made and unique. Nice work. Have fun and success.
I love watching your work and just watching how neat you do your work. Thanks for sharing with us. 😊🦄
Everyday i open youtube to check your subs and i feel so happy when they are increasing. By the way i did the same think last week and my shirt was the exact design as yours🤓
