- San Diego Loyal players walked off the field mid-game Wednesday, forfeiting in protest after a member of the Phoenix Rising reportedly used a homophobic slur directed at Loyal midfielder Collin Martin.

Unless actions like this are commonplace we will never eradicate homophobia or other forms of hate. Imagine being ridiculed for WHO you are. Nothing you’ve ever done or chosen has led to this. Hate towards people for how they are born is what is wrong with our society.
Collin Martin is openly gay. His teammates backed him up after an opponent addressed him using a homophobic slur. Right on guys!

Professional sports teams’ marketable product is identity. Winning games rewards those whose fealty is expressed through team-affiliated merchandise purchases, which In turn, boost a franchise’s revenue, as well as the league.
Since Loyal sells its collective ideal of inclusion over its ranking, I’m assuming they’re content with thank-you notes, guest spots on Ellen & The View, and participation trophies.(do they even give those out to players who walk off the pitch?).
I wonder if more Americans might consider spending their time and income to improve their own performance in their personal pursuits, rather than paying to watch others do it.

I also commend the San Diego Loyal. They lived up to their name and made a sacrifice in support of their teammate. And Kudos to Landon Donovan for supporting his team: an owner with integrity.
Another possible, interesting way they could handle it: play against Phoenix and unleash hell----beat them badly and brutally (and I mean BRUTALLY) to teach them a lesson. First moral lesson: bigotry & homophobia have no place in sports. Second moral lesson: stupid actions have a price. It's a bit primal and uncivilized, but would be interesting to watch. Just a thought.

It is very annoying that a team would win by forfeit just because a player used a slur but I thought that what one likes to do in the bedroom was no business of others. USA has real problems such as racism, politics, safety and the coronavirus. The forfeit is the fault of the homosexual. If you like to practice that lifestyle, it's your problem to deal with. Lol. Somebody hurts your little feelings so you forfeit the damn match. I'd say the slur is kind of fitting, although I don't condone it. I have many gay friends. One of them is like a brother to me. But he's also competitive and doesn't mind scrapping or playing dirty to save face.
Since when has the sports field become the place for activism? This is why I and many others can no longer watch sports. It's become a pathetic display of self righteousness, rather than an exhibition of athletic excellence. Players so soft that words invoke surrender.

It's a societal issue not a sports one, with that I'd agree, but why should a sports field be exempt from social etiquette? It's not that they're choosing to use their sport to make their statement, they're just not willing to accept bigotry anywhere, including their workplace. It's not allowed in my workplace and I doubt it is in yours, so all credit to them for standing up for basic decency. Hopefully there will be some proof of what was or wasn't said.
