Welcome to another episode of Challenger Approaching! In this series, we discuss characters who may be invited to a future entry of Super Smash Bros, then go into ludicrous detail on what they could be like if they joined the fight for real!
Our Challenger this time is a character who only made his debut a year ago, yet he's already left an impact on his home series--and its fans. Raven Beak's actions set the entire Metroid storyline in motion, and in Metroid Dread he steps out of the shadows to face Samus personally. Powerful enough to overwhelm the bounty hunter one-on-one, intelligent enough to manipulate her and others behind the scenes, and enough of a sociopath to use everyone around him as tools to further his own ambitions, Raven Beak has rapidly become a fan favorite villain...and a popular pick for the next Smash title.
But how could this Chozo warlord be designed to stand out amongst his counterparts? How could his futuristic armor and abilities give him a moveset and fighting style all his own? Let's take a look.

I'm really happy that Raven Beak is getting a lot of support for becoming a newcomer for the next Smash game.
Hope that he will joins the next smash game along with Meowscarada or possibly fully evolved grass type starter Pokémon from Gen 10, Noah from Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Pauline from Super Mario.
my only issue with it is that he'd likely just end up being a Samus echo fighter (even during his boss fight a whole bunch of his attacks are just copies of Samus's abilities in Dread), and we already have a villainous echo fighter of Samus
he certainly has a lot of potential beyond that, and the abilities that he uses in his boss fight aren't ones that Samus uses in Smash, but I find myself doubting that Nintendo would give him something unique when they could just get away with making him an echo.
Yeah Raven Beak is now my most wanted newcomer for the potential next Smash lol.
Unfortunately however I'm starting to see his chances as pretty low, because if Prime 4 comes out around the time a new Smash is announced, he might be competing with Sylux.
Sylux is a better Metroid rep.
It's pretty amazing just how much moveset potential Raven Beak has from his boss fight alone
That’s what I thought the second I saw it!
The last thing we need is a third Samus, though, even if he is a semiclone.
@@BenjaminAnderson21 I would rather deal with a “third Samus” than a second Sonic…
@@BenjaminAnderson21 Really? A "Third Samus"? Did you play the game or even watch Del's video? Raven Beak is FAR different from Samus.
@@BenjaminAnderson21 He’s a *Zone Breaker* , not a *Zoner*
It's kinda appropriate that you gave Ravenbeak the "fuck you Samus" moveset.
The moment I fought Raven Beak in Dread, I immediately thought: “This dude would be amazing to have appear in Smash”.
I like how the moveset parallels Samus, and even kind of furthers raven beak as a character.
Victory screen ideas:
1. Raven Beak's foot/talon crunches on the stage floor, as he looks down at the camera, staring for a moment before turning and walking away, the implication being that you are no longer useful, and thus unworthy of any further attention.
2. Raven Beak uses Flash Shift to dash forward and grab the camera, lifting it up before pointing his arm cannon at it, speaking his motto in Chozo language, his voice dripping with cold contempt and superiority.
3. Raven Beak stands stiffly, groaning and slightly shaking as black liquid drips from crevices in his armour, hinting at the truth of his current existence. He then raises his head and gives an unnatural roar, the liquid disappearing as he relaxes into a battle-ready stance, wrangling back his control from the parasite that took him.
For the second one: better yet, he SHOOTS the camera after speaking his motto, causing the screen to fade to black (excluding the other results and stuff)
The way I’d handle number two is have the splash of his name and the finish of the musical ditty be synched to not long after he picks up the camera and aims at it. You only hear him say “power is everything” if you don’t immediately hit A to go to the stats screen, the jaunty little results screen loop waiting for him to finish in cold dead silence first.
Love the first two!
Honestly, The 3rd Victory Pose Is Probably My Favorite Because How Unique It Is And How It Hints At His Current Existence.
Is really good
I've got to appreciate how Metroid doesn't mess around whatsoever when making its bad guys.
He showed up, made a phat first impression, and brought a three phase boss fight with plenty of flashy moves to build a moveset from. It also helps that he's the first real sentient antagonist for the series and not some monster with a demonstrable level of intelligence.
That cheeky one winged angel nod mid fight also helped put him on an intimidation pedestal next to Sephiroth, so it feels like he was made for Smash.
Ridley, Mother Brain, and Dark Samus are all sentient, they don’t show it much in the games, but they aren’t just monsters.
Melissa Bergman: "Well, actually, I-"
Every Metroid fan: "Shut the fuck up."
He's easily the best villain in a Nintendo game in a long time
My plan with your take on Raven Beak:
*Play defensively and build Aeion.
*Get Lightning Armor.
*B U L L Y
*Repeat…
I think Raven Beak was a awesome first villain for Metroid newcomers to be their first villain, myself included. And he would be awesome in Smash Bros too!
He was also an amazing villain for oldtime fans. He started everything afterall
That concept you stated at the end... quite an interesting idea. The moveset is quite nice as well, though I think maybe having a weaker version of Neutral or Side Special without full meter would be fine to have. I feel like the moves you gave would also show his personality very well, which is always good to see.
Also, if Raven Beak were to get in, his reveal trailer should be a brutal free-for-all with him, Samus, and any of the two Metroid villains that happened to return.
If you’re talking about the final smash, I might as well put my idea for it here so more people see it:
I think the targeting reticle and AoE of the final smash should be X-shaped or semi-X-shaped, to differentiate it from similar final smashes. Maybe it could also have a sweet spot right at the center, where Raven Beak’s head hits.
Samus with ZSS toggle via a taunt, Dark Samus echo, Ridley, Raven Beak and Sylux. Perfect Metroid reps for Smash.
There is definitely room for all as most if not all the guest characters are not coming back next time.
I also want Samus’ alts to be actual different suits not just recolours:
Super Varia suit - Samus Returns Gravity suit - Fusion suit - Prime Phazon suit - Echoes Light suit - Corruption PED suit - Dread Fusion suit - Dread Metroid suit.
After the huge push for Sylux and the inclusion of Ridley, my brain wouldn't stop imagining an imagined moveset of Sa-X where it would morph it's body and use different species and bosses for attacks.
Man Black Mage has just been waiting for his moveset forever.
_”Do Chozo sweat…?”_
Your videos make me wish Smash DLC never stopped lol
We’ll probably get another game within a couple years.
Either next smash game or smash ultimate gets Mario kart 8 deluxe treatment rerelease style.
I'd want Raven Beak to...
-Begin with both his wings
-Lose one wing at 80%
-You can then choose to rip off his second wing for increased speed/faster aeion recharge in exchange for +10 damage and worse recovery
Raven Beak would be a cool addition to have in a future game
Really good concept, I really like the idea of the Aeion gauge especially that side special. The idea of a heavy that can get a sudden burst of speed sounds pretty cool.
I think the only change I'd make is making the Dark Sphere his neutral special, in my opinion it's a much more iconic attack and I think it would just function way better
God, raven beak would’ve been so fun.
One of, if not my favorite final boss I've played in a video game yet. Hopefully this is not the last we see of his character.
I really don't think he will show up again, at least in not any major way.
@@lk_3099 I mean they did mention cloning, so...
@@lk_3099 He doesn't really have any way to show up in Metroid canon because yeah he's super dead, but OP didn't say anything about canon
Pico from F-Zero feels like such a sleeper hit for a unique newcomer from that series. He leans closer to using guns, which many characters already use + he's an alien. We need more alien characters for visual variety imo.
Personally I'd hope Dark Samus gets de-cloned before Raven Beak gets in, but he definitely has a ton of potential as a fighter.
If he were to have that stall and fall d-air I'd really hope Ridley's gets replaced by his downward tail stab though. Two villains from the same series who aren't intended to be clones having basically the exact same d-air would feel pretty redunant.
Raven Beak is probably my #1 newcomer, so I'm happy to see him represented so well :)
As someone who enjoys zoners, this guy sounds both terrifying and fun as hell to play.
The final smash did get me though. Going head-first into the Metroid's sci-fi horror elements with that one.
His animations in boss fight are perfect. It's just amazing animations and how fluid he is while fighting with Samus.
I love how he uses aeion! It was something I was hoping Samus would have had and was disappointed when she didn't represent any of the aeion abilities.
While Raven Beak is a massive jerk to defeat, I can't help but be happy at the thought of him possibly joining forces with Ridley. As someone who played Metroid Dread, this was a great moveset concept and you're so cool for making it. Also, I need your advice. I'm making a series of fighter reworks on Smashboards and have no idea how to deal with statistics, so is there a simpler way of listing stats for fighters?
Smashboards?
@@jamainegardner4193 It's the Smash Community Website.
@@fletchking-teamdream7598 I guess you learn something new everyday
Heck, Imagine If In A Special Edition Of Metroid Dread, He Mutates Into A Ridley Clone And Fights Samus In Her Metroid Suit?
He probably already has, since there is a mural in Ferenia showing the Mawkin interacting with the Space pirates, and the Weapon that Ridley used during the takeover of Zebes was basically just a larger version of his Black hole attack
I really like the integration of the Aeon abilities as his core gameplay concept it's really solid, but I can't help but feel using his dark orb as a simple throw animation is wasted potential it would be a really unique and fun projectile. The idea of a massive large range homing projectile that corner your opponent between a rock and a hard place just seems so great as a combo and pressure tool
Two things popped into my head, Raven Beak Flash Shifting through Min Min's arms to grab her, and the inevitable silly Kirby hat.
Darth Gumball.
I think this is a really healthy heavy design because you’d still have to play smart and wait for the right moment, but you have a lot more agency on when those moments are and can even force them to happen now and then rather than hoping the other person whiffs or does exactly what they need to do every time.
This is such a Hadar Sen Olmen moment
Them Metroid characters always getting them strong ass back air kicks lmao
I liked some of your ideas for aerial's, tilts, and special moves. Although I think he has enough unique moves to make him different from Samus that I'd prefer he didn't borrow some of her aerial's.
I think my issue with this concept is less about the moveset and more about the base idea. Raven Beak is a Chozo, a space alien bird. Birds aren't that heavy and their bones are designed to be light for flight and maneuverability in the air. Heavy birds don't fly (penguin, ostrich, cassowary). But Raven Beak does fly, so he likely would be lightweight or mid weight, and NOT a heavy. His armor wouldn't weigh him down.
As such, I think he'd made way more sense as a mid to lightweight with great air speed and fast moves. But his tall body and mid to lightweight are his weaknesses. Think about Sephiroth, Mewtwo and Rosalina: big, tall bodies, lightweight. Raven Beak would have great air speed and fast moves (low end lag and little start up lag) to compensate for the tall body and lightweight. And I'd give him as many air jumps as Pit and Dark Pit, since Raven Beak has wings too. Also, his speed boost/shine spark would probably make for an easier Up Special too, which he uses in his 3rd phase of the boss fight to go in any direction.
Actually managed to get 1 last Challenger Approaching video out before the end of the year! Nice work! XD Also, Noah from Xenoblade 3 actually didn't win, I'm surprised, lol. Anyway, I think Raven Beak definitely has a lot of potential of being in the next Smash installment as a playable fighter (assuming if there'll be a Smash 6)! Hell, I think he could even make for a pretty epic boss fight just like in Metroid Dread! He has such a badass character design, an amazing boss battle with many different attacks, and is a very memorable villain from that game that it would be kind of a waste to not include him to the Smash roster (or at least include him in SOME compacity). We'll just have to wait, and see if by the time Smash 6 comes out (again, IF there'll be another installment), Metroid Prime 4 is STILL delayed, and doesn't stand in his way of snatching that invite for himself. Also, I don't think you broke the Metroid lore by bringing back Raven Back from the grave especially when Dark Samus was killed off in Prime 3, and she became fully playable (albeit as mostly a clone of Samus, unfortunately), haha. At any rate, another solid CA video, Delzethin! :D I look forward to seeing who the next fighter will be! I hope you have a fun, and safe Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
I think this moveset is really well designed. I tried thinking of a moveset for him in the past and was proud of it, but yours blew mine out of the water. I think the Aion themed specials and how the armor is implemented sounds *really* cool, as well as the way his up special would be enhanced by holding the button down longer, consuming Aion if wanted.
My only tweak would be that Flash Shift could do two quick dashes in the first press (diagonally up then back down), then two more after the second press. This way it’s closer to the way it works in the game while still functioning the same.
Y'all, PLEASE choose Black Mage
he's been trying to get his time in the limelight for like four videos now 😂😭
Raven Beak is pretty much my dream newcomer at this point. I really like the ideas you had with this moveset! Really makes him stand out from the other heavies. I do have a bad feeling though that Ridley would probably be replaced by Raven Beak in the next game, but if it's a moveset like this, it might be worth the trade off!
I recall one time that somebody said Raven Beak would play no differently than Samus. Like, what??
You did him justice here. I'd vote for Noah or Meowscarda if I could.
Did you block me? Why did you do that?
"do chozo sweat?" well if theyre bird people then no. sweat is exclusively a mammal thing, and mostly a human (and horse?) thing at that
this is incredible and I'd love to see exactly this in smash. I really want to try playing this and I think if this or anything similar for raven beak gets into smash 6 as a fighter then he may just become my main, I've never been one for slow, heavy fighters but I think with the amount of power in this one I'd be completely fine with his speed, weight and size
a Floating but slow air speed with 3 jumps sounds neat, like you're "standing" on air
Personally, I'd rather see Raven Beak as a Boss in Classic Mode
Raven beak is basically Samus Aran, but in Steroid. He has all Samus's Equipments, but he is superior in many things.
It's too bad that they stopped making Metroid Mangas. Raven beak would make a excellent villain with more depth.
This is sooooo amazing, I love how thought out these are! Keep them up!
such a raw villain
This is the first of your videos I've ever seen and I'm very impressed by how much depth you went into.
I think the only change I would personally consider making would be to make his forward special into a dash grab instead of just the flash shift.
Excellent video!
Fantastic concept! I've been hoping to see Raven Beak for a while, and you did not disappoint!
Can't wait to see Mr.Beak pull out a Neck Grasper on Kirby in Smash 6
Godlike video. Loving the content and can't wait for (probably the pokemon) next one!
Idk if Ravenbeak will be chosen for Smash 6 by the time Metroid Prime 4 is out. But, I also wouldn’t mind him being a boss in Smash 6 if not a playable newcomer.
If Smash 6 is a continuation of classic Smash Bros or if further DLC is expanded on Ultimate, this would be a great way to include an updated moveset for the Samus archetype while keeping the classic Samus intact (similar to how BOTW Link and Young Link function).
Love this series, would be really cool to see a take on the Xenoblade 3 representative OR Malos as a Shulk echo.
Hey! A new video on our favorite Chozo Vergil wannabe!
ridly: KILL! KILL! HAHAHAHAHA!
king k rool: crazy laghing in corner
dedede: oh ya, I WON!!!
raven beak: lets get this over with, I got plans to acomplish
Damn, I was kinda hoping that Floragato would get the spotlight instead of its final evolution just because it fights with a yoyo (Meowscarada too but it's not as clear)
Let's gooooo I have been waiting for this
Very good video! I love your ideas even if I mightve done certain things differently. The lightning armor in particular is an amazing idea I hadn't thought about
Your narration skills are great.
Honestly, I’d be surprised if the next Smash game hasn’t already begun development. As such, Raven Beak may very well have a shot (as you mentioned). Also, while I’m aware that the Aeion gauge is lore-accurate, it reminds me of the Drive Gauge from Street Fighter 6.
These moves and their setbacks sound quite fair. I'd love to see this
If Raven beak was added to smash ultimate, I think it’s final smash would be something like when he starts the final smash, he will shoot out a giant electric explosive pulse. If any players are in the surrounding area, they will be thrown into his final smash. Raven will command all of his soldiers and and grab the opponent by the neck, he was in, smash him on the floor drag them to wall before. putting his arm canon up to their face and shooting it, ending the final smash, the final smash will kill at 81% ignoring the kill if a players at 0% and he does the final smash it will likely do 68% damage
This sounds so much fun, wow
I have an interesting suggestion for a character. A flash game character. The Dart Monkey from the Bloons franchise. He could use moves from the many other towers and abilities from the games and the final smash could be the Temple Of The Sun God shooting eye lasers from the background, similar to what it does in the T.O.T.S.G. level in BTD4.
What about Henry Stickmin?
@@alijahaskew4644 being more-ish recent and popular, I feel like he could also make it but (to my knowledge), Bloons existed before. But I may be wrong. And I would just love to see Bloons in smash.
what if he had two alts that had him without a mask/ruined armor like in the final phase? would also parallel zs samus and ridley having two unique skins
I’m surprised you haven’t done Urshifu from Pokémon. Has a lot of potential to be a combo of Aegis and Pokémon Trainer. Great in depth video.
Final smash could be the orange ball he used in the boss fight but and larger scale. Making three pulses and explodes on the last pulse. Each pulse stuns
I grew up on Metroid: Fusion and have a bias towards it. Regardless, I can confidently say that Raven Beak is easily one of the greatest Metroid villains ever
Raven Beak just looks amazing and has the right amount of moveset potential in one game in his first appearance. I just love how he looks and would be another interesting Metroid villain in the smash roster as well as another Metroid rep. He would just be the same height as King K. Rool, Bowser, or Ganondorf.
This makes me have flashbacks to fighting him. I never beat him and now I'm too afraid to try
Raven beak is cool
If the Emmy were added to smash, that would be pretty cool already have a move that sit down for them too so to the window to the wall to the wall
Raven Beak was genuinely such a hard fight for me and when I finally beat him I was absolutely ecstatic about it. And also seeing teasers of what Raven Beak did to the opposing tribe in Samus Returns was so cool. Genuinely wouldn't be against this power house getting into smash
If he had this moveset, i would really love for him to go into a wall cling if he hits one during his up B.
Incredible as always.
And yeah… Noah’s gonna win, but my vote would go to Meowscarada.
If you are interested in character requests, I suggest Dianthus from Harvestella
Raven beak in smash6 wold be awesome.
My only thought the whole time I was fighting him was "this would make such a good smash character!!!"
(Well also, "oh no he's hot!")
Giving him hit recharge on a
Aone would be good as well
About Beam Burst I think it would be better off having no knockback or hitstun except the finisher but it does have a slight multiplier against shields. In combination with its near-continuous hitboxes this move would absolutely force approaches but not hurt an opponent too much for actively dodging most of the move. And maybe Lightning Armor gives you knockback immunity from only projectiles in addition to the damage reduction to all damage though it burns through your Aeion faster and after using Lightning Armor once it maybe slows your recharge of Aeion until you die so you can't spam it but using it late makes your already impressive durablity even greater.
I am a Freedom Planet fan, it's my favorite indie game and would love Lilac in Smash someday. Also I know people want Dragon Boost as her side special but for that I think her amped up mode with that little boomerang laser thing and the boost given it like Fox, Falco, and Wolf's up specials. So I'm thinking Dragon Boost be up special too.
I think you could probably come up with an awesome Moveset for Dante from Devil may Cry.
If we even raven beak was added to smash, I would make it like this for his recovery is called wing shot if Raven beak is on a platform he’ll be able to do a dash that will almost cross the stage when Raven beak falls off the platform he will fly off with his wings and more finish cell recovery. He’ll do a shot with his arm cannon and then do a backflip in midair
great moveset concept but bluuuh at these Who's Next choices. Marina Liteyear when???
Alright it's been pestering me, as I look at the image my imagination keeps defaulting to gru
He will be at least an assist trophy when we get metriod 4
I would instead get rid of the Aeon gauge and make him work like Sephiroth.
Whereas after taking enough damage, his eyes quickly shine and he opens his wings, making his jumps floaty and giving you a third jump. His attacks get a bit more powerful but knockback stays the same
It's a crime you didn’t include Shinespark into his moveset.
Raven Beak >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sylux
Imagine if we got an extended version of the Chozo language from Raven Beak getting into the next Smash game and being a main antagonist in a story mode.
i dont normally watch moveset videos but i decided to this time because i like raven beak a lot, and ive had my own idea for his moveset, so i wanted to see what your ideas were.
i am disappointed, unfortunately.
the quality of the video is excellent and you sure do give a lot of detail, but the moveset itself is just... not good.
to describe my problem with this moveset simply, at the end of the video, you describe his weaknesses as being slow, movement and attacks wise, and having to be careful because of his limited mobility, carefully using his resources to overcome those weaknesses. that is not raven beak.
raven beak is a terrifying monster of a boss fight that hits you hard and fast and does not let up. he is not slow. raven beak's weakness is the opposite of being slow. his weakness is that, as the fight goes on, if you win the war of attrition, slowly, he loses what makes him strong. first he loses a wing, then he loses his helmet, and then he loses his body to the x parasite, and then he loses. raven beak's moveset should reflect *that*, not just be yet another slow heavyweight that hits hard with terrible frame data.
what you made here is basically just a samus moveset but with a focus on aieon energy. i get that theyre connected pretty closely, but not *that* close.
You know, I think I agree with your attrition thing and would find it more fun to play (i like fast stuff im impatient), but I sort of love the moveset concepts he chose. I think just tweaking the move properties and his stats to fit your overall philosophy would be a good representation and perhaps my selfish best fit (though id tweak flash shift to have the first press do two dashes (diagonal up then diagonal down), and the second do two more to be like the game, and maybe the final smash to be the big red laser)
@@HaydenTheEeeeeeeeevilEukaryote a lot of the moves he chose dont have to change to make him faster. the moveset i wrote a few years ago actually has quite a lot of moves in common with this one, theyre just balanced around having him be oppressive and fast but losing steam over time rather than slow as hell
I want Noah for the next episode.
I would choose Noah and Mio and Meowscarada.
Speaking of Nintendo villains I'm surprised that nobody has thought of ethier a Fire Emblem villain or a Xenoblade Chronicles villain yet.
so will Raichu be next?
Request: Jet the hawk
Poor Samus XD. It's just her and villains XD. Dark Samus, Ridley and then this jerk... you could almost hear her teeth grit from her helmet.
10:27 - "Duh!" Yeah, of course... And yet I've seen people actually argue against a character's inclusion because their arsenal happens to include some overwhelming power, and it would _undoubtedly_ would be a 1:1 recreation and thus too broken for Smash.
Id main him so hard
Hades? Kid icarus? Still i was hoping his badass beam would be a move
can you do french bayonetta next
I wouldn't mind if Ridley gets cut in favor of Raven Beak next Smash since the latter is treated as a bigger bad for the whole series while the former was just a recurring boss like Kraid that only became a big important character through retcons from the remakes, manga, and Other M.
