I was always grateful when someone handed me a bottle of water, after walking out of a building. I hope that they removed at least 10lbs off of that gear.
Milliken knows what's up! If I were a Firefighter, I'd go with the garb that can take a straight up blasting from a flamethrower. This should set the new standard, it could save lives.
Not a firefighter but work around many of them. I have heard the new stuff doesn't let you feel the heat, and when it does, it's too late and your burning up.

This one looked painful. First the guy catching a water stream to the face and then Fenton being inside the storage compartment while the door gets slammed.
Having personally worn that “not the best gear” and damn near had heat exhaustion while wearing it… it’s nice to see that things have improved. I hope the military upgrades to it too but I doubt it.
had heat exhaustion in August, in FL doing two-a-days. couldnt finish 2nd one. rested, fluids, head in shower, about 45min back to it, but just helped with hoses.
Why not just douse the protective clothing with water? Like, just the outside. That should evaporate quick enough while not transferring heat to the body as fast. Plus, it adds some mass to the clothing, mass that can take up more energy. I would honestly like to know how well it would work
The only problem with fabric that breaths is the carcinogens that accompany the air. That’s why we use Lion Redzone. Like a double wrapped baked potato in that stuff. Hell I wish it breathed.
Do fireguys ever wear cooling vests under their gear? I've never worn one but have seen them, used to contract in pulpmills and overhead jackhammer among other things in areas that could reach 40+ degrees Celsius working 10 hour days. Heat stress was a real concern
Can you talk about PFAS and gear? I know the IAFF sent out a release a couple years ago and now officially advises firefighting companies and districts opt for PFAS-free gear whenever new gear is ordered going forward. Has that made other risk factors increase? How do you guys measure the cost-benefit? While reducing PFAS in gear may lower cancer rates (the #1 killer of firefighters), will it increase other causes of death, like cardiac arrest, dehydration, or burns?
Our training gear is the old junk that works and gets abused. The gear in my bag though is super light, easy to don and doff, and breaths to much better.
Quick question, anyone else want to see the 20 or so seconds AFTER the video ended that most likely has Fenton knocking on that door and asking to be let out? :)
