Welcome to the Hobo Cousin world! This book changed my life 4 years ago. It’s my EDC, nothing pretty work horse! My cover dupes as my wallet. Love it and it’s so portable! I still buy all the stickers and other planner just to play in but all work, schedules and journaling go into my Hobo❤.
The Hobonichi Cousin is my planner peace, ive been using one since 2016, before that i tried every time of planner system going but always gravitated back to the Hobonichi and now ive used it for so many consecutive years and now never feel the urge to try different planners, i just love this planner as i only need one book for everything :)
i switched planners so many times in 2020-2021 and used a Cousin for 2022 and i finally found what i love! i actually love the paper and i like the look of ghosting because it feels like the planner gets more use/love. idk how to explain it lol. i love having monthly/weekly/daily and have figured out how to make the planner really work for me after trying to many others. i have the english cousin for 2023 and i can't wait to use it
I’ve gotten into tomoe river paper in 2022 and I love it, it’s a dream to write on. I am using a wonderland planner and notebook in one cover so my year is together. I’ve started doing a lot of journaling in it. Like you, I love that you can switch up what you put on your daily pages and the format. It’s a game changer for me!! Glad to see you enjoying your hobonichi and look forward to more videos like this!
This planner is my everything! I did the same thing in 2021 I got an April start in august and kept it up through the end of the year and now I'm full time in a cousin for this year and my 2023 cousin came last week! I'm so excited! I got my covers from Etsy. I have three and I just sort of rotate based on mood :)
I love the paper and being able to feel the writing through the other side too!! I loved seeing all the weekly spreads - I've also seen someone use them but turning the book so each column is landscape and using it to write an mini paragraph diary for highlights/ gratitude etc instead that I might try out. Loved this video xx
I so identify with you in this video!!! After not being able to settle in with the very beautiful Hemlock and Oaks planner I got for this year, I decided to get a Cousin Avec in early August. I was curious about Hobonichi last fall, but decided the paper situation was enough of a concern to avoid it. Interestingly, I don’t care one way or another about the paper. I feel like I can relax and just try things in this Life Book - which is what techo actually is. I love the daily pages and being able to do whatever I want. The monthly and weekly gives me the structure I want. And it all fits in a contained and fairly small book. It’s a great fit for me and what I want from a planner. So glad you’re enjoying yours!
I have been so tempted to try it for years and have yet to do it. My life has been changing so frequently (and hopefully changing again soon) over the last two years that I can't find what works yet. Maybe if this new change happens I will give it a go. This video has really pushed my intrigued button even more. I love your layouts.
Love this!! Thank you for doing this! Lauren Phelps Designs has more A5 vinyl covers and pencil boards if you are needing them or would like a different design ❤️
I use the little tester page that they send with the new planners and out it in my weeks cover(my everyday carry) so that I always have it and can test it on the paper without ruining my planner. 😅
I fell down this rabbit hole a few years ago. I then fell down the stalogy rabbit hole and any time i try to go back to rings, EC or anything else i find myself back in a bound system. I love my Sarasa Grand pens. I think i have every color and then buy the fast dry ink refills. Enjoy! Oh and blotting paper or construction paper i keep handy if needed since the ink can sit a little wet for a bit :) Have FUN!
I've been a Hobonichi fan for a few years now. A very portable option is the Hobonichi weeks. It's perfect for your purse. It's my everyday carry and my Hobonichi cousin stays at home.
I ❤️❤️❤️❤️ how you're using the Cousin. I will be starting my 2nd year in Hobonichi planners. But when you said "we know, we don't care" I about lost it. But it's so true. Another pen to try and very accessible is the Masters Touch Fine Liner pens at Hobby Lobby. Amazing! My favorite. My favorite part of Hobonichi is that it weighs 2 ounces. So easy to move around. As of "now," I think I'm using Hobonichi A6 Techo and the Mega Weeks for 2023. Have a wonderfully blessed day!
It was super fun to watch you figure out the Hobonichi. I've been using the Cousin for a while but seeing someone getting a feel for it the first time and coming up with their own ways to use it always gives me new ideas, too.
International shipping is expensive to the US especially depending on which coast you live on. Japan is 6300+ miles away from the US east coast. Miles = $$$$$ in delivery costs 🤷🏽♀️
I get the A6 for journaling since it doesn’t have weekly pages. If you end up liking the planner that may be something to consider to keep it private. I have been using the cousin a little more than a year & still tweaking how I use it but just love the flexibility. Hope to keep seeing this as you get into it.
I red red from the Hobonichi website too and was shocked by shipping so I flipped over to Jetpens to compare and maybe Amazon Japan, where I made my first Hobonichi purchase. I think it ended up being about the same price to get the same items from jetpens with free shipping since the item price was a bit more there. Amazon Japan didn’t have anything yet. So I figured I wasn’t going to save much if any money by going over to jetpens.
Until this video, I did not like this planner as I had no idea how to do a page spread. To have an entire year with monthly, weekly and daily views in one compact book is huge! I have a Coach notebook/journal cover and prayed it would fit. It does and I am super stoked to maybe having planner peace. Thanks again for sharing your designs and reviews.
Just received my first 2023 Hobonichi Cousin after 3 years in an EC Softbound, so was thrilled to see you had entered that world too. Thanks for showing your process of discovering how to make it your own. Looking forward to seeing how you continue to tweak your spreads.
I love this. I have always liked the way the hobonichi looked but was also afraid Of not liking the paper. I of course will probably end up trying it at some point.
I love your laugh! I’m watching this with an ice pack on a back injury. Thank you for sharing your joy with us! This was so helpful. For two years, ive used the 7x9 vertical plum paper plus carrying around a bullet journal for dailies. It is so bulky, but it looks like the cousin would work in one book?! 😮😅
I love my cousin. I used to walk dogs and needed to juggle 20+ appointments a week, and the weekly view was great for that. I have found that it isn't quite what I need for a planner so I'm just journaling without using the page dates now. It's also great for that but after I fill it I'm switching to a less expensive journal 😅 I swear by Tombow mono drawing pens on TRP. They barely leave an impression on the paper even without the pencil board and they dry nearly instantly.
I used this a few years ago, loved it, and now I want to try it again. I have no calendar but a monthly family calendar but this would bring me peace!! Ahhh. Thank you ❤️
This is an amazing video! I’ve been thinking about getting a Hobonichi Cousin and you went over every question I had in my mind! Super helpful! Thank you so much for sharing.
Not sure if you noticed later, but the English version hobonichi 2023 also does not have the Japanese holidays colored in. It is more neutral for outside countries. Another thing I like about the dark colored pencil boards, is that they neutralize the Black ink writing on the back side of the page, so that the grid pattern is easier to see on the blank page you are trying to write on.
Great video, thanks so much. I have been tempted this year to get one as I find it fascinating. I think it's great to have the month, weekly and daily view. Thanks for the pen test. I'm a sarasa fan, so that works out well. I have my heart set on an ec softbound in bloom this year, but if they ever have a year that I don't like the designs, then I'll give it a try. 😀
The crinckling and the ridging is why I can’t let it go. I don’t like the feel or sound of construction like paper (the one that that is thick and textured and gel ink sort of feathers). Biggest issue I have is that I’ve used it for work the whole year and it’s thick, really thick.
Tomoe River paper has been my favorite for years. I’ve been using hobonichi for a few years now, but next year I’m trying Sterling Ink’s new planner. it’s similar to the cousin, but in B6 size.
I got my first order last week and I'm already using my Weeks that will be my every day carry because I have some trips that I'm planning for next spring and as I make reservations, I'm putting them in the planner. But I also have a cousin for my work planner and I couldn't resist the Tokyo Metronome cover because it was so gorgeous!!
I've seen the weeks and I have thought about getting that! I wanted something small I could throw in my purse. But I love this one too! So many options.
The book is actually about $17 usd when you order from Japan, with the shipping it comes to about 35-40 depending on what else you buy. Depending on what country you’re in, it’s still cheaper to buy direct from them.
@@mariplansalist I don’t know if maybe I did something wrong or the exchange rates have changed a lot, but I got a total of 8600 yen which according to google is $59.73. It costs $60 on Amazon with free shipping with prime and as of today it’s in stock. I thought it would be kinda cool to receive international mail. When did you order yours?
I love your journey. Really helpful as I start my Hobonichi Cousin journey next year (used the weeks and the A6 a couple of years ago) but this book is a little intimidating. You made it less so.
Your Instagram pics led me here! Lol They kept popping up on my feed. I love your design style. I’m using a weeks and I’m going to play with my fude pens more. Great video!

I look forward to seeing more Hobo videos from you!

Shipping from Hobonichi directly is indeed expensive but it’s fast once it ships!! It gets here quicker than some companies from just a couple of states over from me 😂 Regardless, I’ll likely not order directly from them next year. I have the past two years though. Even Amazon has the basic items available too. By the time I decide to order the cousin avec, I’ll either get it through Jet Pens if they have it in stock by then or Amazon 😁

Helen at TCMC talked me into a Hobo and I only used it for a month. I couldn’t do the smearing, the paper, the stickers, the tiny writing. I’m sure I’ll go back to it occasionally but I’m sticking with EC for the paper 😅
I’m so happy we are on this journey together. Crinkly paper, shadowing, and 4 layouts in one, found my new planner love!

I LOVE the honbonichi cousin. I've been using it and the A6 for about three years. I have my Cousin in my LV Agenda cover and it fits perfect.
I feel like there are two types of Hobonichi people. 1. They LOVE it! 2. They don't love it because they haven't tried it yet! LOL

I love this! I also love the “crinkly” paper. I like how you’ve done the planning. Blessings.
As a fountain pen user, I LOVE Tomoe River Paper. It shows off my inks the best out of any paper.
Great suggestion!
Hey try the pilot juice pen .38 it never smudges in the hobonichi. Drys very quick I love that pen for both the cousin and weeks. And it’s bold. 🎉
Adding to my list! Thank you!

@@JuliesPlans Thanks! Is it one of the "cover on cover" ones? Do you have a link? :)
Love the non EC content!
😘😘😘
I tried the smaller one and the paper threw me off. I’m sad about that because I do think they are super cool.
The paper can be a bit of shock at first because it’s just so unique! Definitely takes time to get used to!
@@JuliesPlans it’s the ghosting more than anything I think. I used to bullet journal so now that’s a thing. 😂😂😂
Julie: I don't trust myself with a fountain pen
Me: same. Lmao 😂🤣🤣
Helen at TCMC talked me into a Hobo and I only used it for a month. I couldn’t do the smearing, the paper, the stickers, the tiny writing. I’m sure I’ll go back to it occasionally but I’m sticking with EC for the paper 😅
Alcohol pens bleed through Tomoe River paper...everything else doesn't 😊
Dear Julie, please stop tempting me with fun things. Love, me. 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Damn it Julie 😂😂😂
