- The gearbox seen in this video is probably the smallest Lego automatic gearbox in the world.
I experimented a lot and finally came across this variant, which is way smaller than all the others here on RUclips.
I hope you enjoyed the video and I would be very happy about a subscription. Thanks👍

Finally a small automatic one which have no problems with reverse, Good Job!
And thx for that Vid it helps so much!!
Thank you for this great Feedback!
The next video is coming tomorrow...😉
@@LucasDynamics Niceee
THIS IS GENIUS. congrats on such a great design, you really saved me a lot of work
No problem!
Thanks for the feedback...
For what do you need the gearbox?
Great job, had plans to use it in a technic car, but I figured out that I had the wrong differential piece
Great information on how the gearbox works and how to build it - thanks for sharing. The music, however, was just too much - however I simply muted and enjoyed the video anyways. I hope you find much success with your channel!
Thanks alot👍
The next video gets some calmer music...😉
Totally agree
Thanks!
I liked the music because it's a genius discovery and needs celebrating as the human race has solved yet another problem. Calm music simply would not suit I feel @@LucasDynamics
Thanks! Will probably use this in my Rosenbauer Panther Airport Rescue MOC!
Cool, make a video about it!
Smart👍
Thanks man!
Nice bro many others only have one direction
Thanks man!
Make it stackablee
Really apriciate you man 😘😘
Do you need a gearbox with many gears?
A video is planned...😉
Cool
Thanks 👍
Cool Video 👍
Thanks 👍
I'm making a Lego RC supercar and I'm thinking of using this for active aero dynamics ('air-brake', were the rear spoiler goes up to improve braking). Do you think that the car slowing down (motors not being used or in lower speed) is enough to trigger first gear or does pressure restricting the rotation cause the gear change (the gearbox will be connected to the driving axle)?
Thanks for reading my comment, if you have another idea for how I could make active aero I would also appreciate that.
Love your videos, you make the most compact but well built and sturdy mechanisms.
Thanks man!
Sorry for the late response. The gearbox only changes gears if there is pressure restricting the rotation. If you just slow the car down it will not shift... But the active spoiler is a very cool idea!
@@LucasDynamics Thank you for responding👍. My first idea was to link the rear spoiler to the gear shifting mechanism (the stepper mechanism also pushes the rear spoiler up), but I wanted to see if there was a more realistic approach.
Perfect gearbox 👍
Thanks 👍
awesome I tried on my new Moc and it works great lots of torque to thanks a lot
Cool that it works...
What kind of Moc is it ?
@@LucasDynamics it's a crawler
@@JDM_CARS_4 With four-wheel drive?
Yup
Cool👍
Mine doesnt disengage from low gear. Any tips? maybe too much friction, but i used yellow circle axles
This usually happens when the car (vehicle) is too heavy, so it stays in 1st gear There are 2 options:
- You make your car lighter 😅
- Or you make the axle (that is parallel to the differential and that holds the 8 tooth gears) stiffer / harder to turn. This makes it easier to change gears back again.
I hope that helps...
Genial gemacht
Thanks 👍
Can you make one with the diff that doesn’t connect to driving rings??)
Very good
Keep going
Thank you very much!
Idea: make a 2 or even 3 of these so if the resistance increases more it will double up on the gearing and go 2x as slow
I like this design, and the music is so nostalgic for some reason... what is it called?
I subbed cuz your cool
Thanks man!😅
How does this compare to the slip-clutch gearbox?
It's a completely different system, much smaller than a slip-clutch gearbox...
Is there a way to build it with a new differential instead?
It would be cool... but this makes it very unstable and weak
Can you make it 3 gear or 4 gear if possible?
Realy cool
Thanks man!
Good video unfortunately i dont have that type of differential. Where do i get it
This is an old differential, you could buy it with an old set or separate...
What happens if it was a buggy motor powering it?
I don’t know….😅
It does the same thing but faster
cool
Thank you!
Hi Lucas I believe the gear ratio is ca 55%; the 8T gears are going at x3 the Diff cage speed which itself is going at Motor - Output. As your reduction on the output gear is 2.5 (8 to 20) and 3/2.5 = 1.2 you have (Motor-Output)x1.2 = Output, so Output = 1.2/2.2 Motor. Nice design !
hi! Agree with your calculations, but I'm a bit confused about where the 2.2 comes from?
My gearbox only stays in first gear, but the differential piece keeps spinning, even when it’s on the second gear. Can anybody help?
Hey, so if you could help me, Whenever I use this gearbox it switches into 1st gear as its supposed to under load but then when it doesnt have load it still stays in 1st gear. I can see that the 8 tooth gears dont slip and still remain on the 24 tooth gears which causes it to go into 1st gear again.
if u dont understand i could send you it on discord
a pic
Thanks for the question...

@@LucasDynamics ok
@@LucasDynamics also is there a way to make this with the 28 teeth newer differential? Would love a vid on it.
🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍
👍
I was wondering, if you have this oriented so the the part that flips back and forth to engage second gear is pointing straight up, would gravity making it fall down cause it to always be in second gear? I don't have the parts myself to build and test
No, because there is friction that flips it in the right direction...
@@LucasDynamicsSo when it shifts from first gear to second, the small gear flips away from the large one? I thought you would have to go in reverse to get the small gear to move in the opposite direction
@@trollinmace Yeah when it changes gears it just lifts a little bit up... And when it switches in reverse it flips to the other side.
@@LucasDynamics Thank you. I'm working on putting this into a train so it can go fast but also pull a lot of weight when it needs to.
@@trollinmace Ok, good luck!
Hey im back at here again! This gearbox is cool but i have problems with it bending so i decided to make it robust
For all the people who wants to make it robust:
Replace the 3 studs beam with the 5 studs one and add a simple connection between the 2 5 studs beam (i'll try to upload the vid later)
Hi, thank you for the advise!
@@LucasDynamics nah, no problem also I subbed to your channel
@@LucasDynamics you also inspired me to build my own rc car! Sadly I don't have the mould king 6.0 (yet)
do you know the gear ratio?
Not really...
The second gear is 1:1 but the first gear is difficult to calculate...
and the fact that literaly lego used this mechanic in many sets 😮
In which sets?
@@LucasDynamicsi had one
@@serafimhacker A Lego set? Which set?
The single hair
I know...😮💨 I saw it first when it was already online
Hmmm seems simple enuf
Yeah, it does!
mine works fine going forwards but going backwards doesn't work because it doesn't swivel all the way up and is unable to change gears. It seems very gravity dependent. another question, does it not work when i add another differential for the back 2 wheels?
It should work with a differential for your back wheels...
@@LucasDynamics yea ive been struggling with it. I think it is simply because the axel that acts as a clutch is to weak.
do you have an official guinness book of world records award?
There is a: ? behind...
That means I'm considering whether it might be an official record.
@@LucasDynamics in other words, you just put it in the thumbnail to clickbait..got it..
It’s a good build. Would be nice if youtubers didn’t clickbait, though..
@@underengineered_1077 In my opinion it's not clickbait!
That "?" is easy to see, which makes it clear what I mean by that!
@@LucasDynamics a guinness world record requires officials to come witness the record and will involve some expenses. We both know you have no intent of making it an official record, so the fact that you put the logo in your thumbnail is 100% clickbait.
Your content is already good and you will certainly get many subs quickly. There's no need to use cheesy clickbait strategies. I know it's a trend on youtube, but it's a bad trend, and it should end.
@@underengineered_1077 This gearbox is the smallest I've ever seen, so I wanted to
consider in the thumbnail if it might even be an official record, I knew it would attract attention, but that wasn't the reason...
that 8 tooth gear on 2L beam will fall out wont it
no, don`t worry...
slip disc cvt is better and you can stick it to yourself
What do you mean exactly with "slip disc cvt" ?
And why would you want to stick a gearbox to yourself?
@@LucasDynamics for fun maybe, but the main part is the slip disc cvt gearbox
@@Jkauppa What is a slip disc gearbox?
@@LucasDynamics literally two discs against each other at variable contact distance, you can check my channel video list for a picture reference
Shame it’s a copied design
From where?
@@LucasDynamics I think they're thinking of the one from FunTastyX but I'm pretty sure this is smaller.
Could be, but the design is completely different...
@@LucasDynamics I agree
