Toni Iommi is one of the creators of heavy metal. Perhaps the very father of the heavy metal guitar sound.
Back when he was just a young man, he was working in a mill and chopped off the tips of two of fingers. So he had to make some "pads" for his fingers. But they couldn't work with fine strings. So he bought 'heavy metal" strings for his guitar. It made a deep and rich sound....la!
And we hear it very clear on this song!

I think for a lot of us Paranoid was our introduction to the band. It is one of those songs that used to be included on every rock or metal compilation alongside the likes of Since you been gone & Ace of spades.
It was a massive song for them as it reached #4 in the UK singles chart and it took them another 8 years before they hit the chart again with Never say die at #21. Paranoid was their first and biggest hit single, hence the inclusion on all those compilations.
While some people will say it is overplayed or they have tired of it, for me it is still one of their best songs. That riff is just so god damn recognisable.

On October 1, the premiere of a stunningly beautiful video for the song “Baikal” took place on Diana Ankudinova’s RUclips channel.
The soundtrack performed by Diana became the main musical theme of the film “The Spirit of Baikal,” which will be released in wide release on October 19, 2023.
In the film itself, Diana voiced two roles - the spirit of Lake Baikal and the voice of the soul of the deceased mother of the main character of the film. The film received several top awards at film festivals.

First heavy metal song ever, created by a series of bizarre accidents. Tommy Iommi worked in a factory in Birmingham and before he turned pro, as a musician, an industrial accident wore his fingers down almost to the bone on his fret hand. So, in order to relieve the pressure on his fingers he had to loosen the strings on his guitar(Gibson SG), thereby deepening the tone. After recording their first album they needed another track, so, on the spot, Iommi came up with the riff and Geezer Butler wrote the lyrics. Clearly, Geezer is not the name his mama gave him, but the name he came to be known as on the backstreets of Birmingham. He was the leader of the band. Ozzie is a legend. Maybe the best rock singer of all time. They were laughed at by the British musical press when their first album was released. Well done and thank you, Geezette!

The original Black Sabbath was: Anthony Frank Iommi (Tony Iommi, guitar)... Terence Michael Joseph Butler (Geezer Butler, bass)... William Thomas Ward (Bill Ward, drums) ... and John Michael Osbourne (Ozzy Osbourne, vocals) ... Formed in Birmingham around 1968 originally as a blues cover band Earth, changing their name to Black Sabbath in 1969 after the first song they had written together - it was inspired by a 1940's horror movie 'Black Sabbath' (which was playing in a movie across the band's rehearsal space)... The band's debut album in 1970 and 2nd album 'Paranoid' the same year, provided the foundations of what would become heavy metal and hard rock music... They influenced everyone from Van Halen to Metallica to Guns N' Roses to Nirvana to KoRn to Nine Inch Nails to Tool ... and beyond.
Ozzy Osbourne wanted to become a rock n' roll singer in 1967 after spending a stint in jail as a teen. His dad bought him a P.A. system and Ozzy put up an ad at a local music store... He met Geezer Butler (who played guitar) through the ad and played in his first band... Then, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward saw the ad, and Tony Iommi knew Ozzy from school (he used to bully Ozzy) and decided to look him up (it was the same Ozzy he knew)... They decided to form a new band w/ Butler and Ozzy and soon, there were just the 4 of them.
In 1969, they heard the first Led Zeppelin record and knew that Robert Plant and John Bonham were from Birmingham... They wanted to play that style of 'heavy rock' and amped up what Led Zeppelin were doing. By 1970, Black Sabbath had their own sound and were touring America... They recalled that the first US tour was at a club in the East Coast and they were playing L.A. Forum in the West Coast (where Led Zeppelin played) ... That's how fast Black Sabbath rose in popularity.
Sadly, Black Sabbath's excessive substance abuse and legal fights, as well as internal turmoil, ended up splitting the original band after Ozzy was fired in 1979 and went on to have a huge solo career in the 80's.
Black Sabbath carried on w/ numerous vocalists, including Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, and Tony 'Cat' Martin... but it was the original band w/ Ozzy Osbourne that is the most iconic and commercially successful.

My favorite band growing up & still to this day)))They started out under the name Earth & played the blues. They changed their name to Black Sabbath in 1969, there was a movie playing in the cinema across the street from the revenue they were playing at called Black Sabbath & they decided to change their name to that along with their style of music to what just heard)) Some song suggestions are After Forever,, Symptoms Of The Universe, Changes, Dirty Women, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.. Keep rocking)))

Geezer is his nickname. His real name is Terence Michael Joseph Butler. Too posh to be a rock star. You also have a problem with pronouncing the last name of the guitarist. The name is unusual for a Briton. He is a son of Italian immigrants. You pronounced it as being someone with Italian-Hispanic roots. But he was born a Briton in Birmingham so the pronunciation of his name took on the Brummie version, something like tow-nee ai-ow-mee. His real name is Frank Anthony. Similarly, Ozzy's real name is John Michael (but I don't know if he himself still remembers it). They in the band's lineup don't give official names, just what their friends call them. That's why the drummer is Bill and not William.
It's also worth knowing that the "demonic" sound of the band, which was considered a forerunner of the heaviest varieties of rock, took after by accident. Tonny has damaged fingertips on his right hand and is left-handed. He had to overtune his guitar to avoid discomfort. And that's how rock from hell, or in fact, from a horror movie, was born. The name of the band Black Sabbath comes from the Italian low-budget horror picture with the original title "I tre volti della paura," directed by Mario Bava and starring the demonic Boris Karloff in 1963.

Also, due to his missing fingertips, Tony Iommi plays with prosthetic caps on the middle and ring fingers of his right hand...not sure how... probably can't feel the strings. The caps are briefly visible on some of their videos. He was also briefly a member of Jethro Tull. Not on any Tull albums, but he is with them on the Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus performance.
