- Running a little late this one sadly, but Christmas was very busy this year!
But here we have my collection of British steam on the go during 2015, a year of steam that nearly didn't happen. Following the near collision of 34067 'Tangmere' and a HST, West Coast Railways, the operator of most steam railtours in the UK had their license revoked, raising fears that there may have been no steam tours this year, or indeed any again. But even when tours were resumed by West Coast when they got their license back, their tours this year were riddled with faults, resulting in some quite spectacular failures, most of which happened on the 'Royal Duchy' tour from Bristol to Par.
Only running 3 times this year, the first time saw 34067 'Tangmere' suffer a horrendous breakdown on the return working at Hemerdon Bank. The second run by 60009 'Union of South Africa' saw it break down before my very eyes between Teignmouth and Newton Abbot, requiring urgent maintenance at the South Devon Railway. The third time however when infinitely more smoothly, due largely in part to the fact that a DB Schenker locomotive was hired in, coming in the form of 70000 'Britannia'.
Aside from WCR's problems, all other steam tours this year were nothing if not fantastic. 61306 'Mayflower' made some spectacular work around London, whilst 35028 'Clan Line' finished her turn on the mainline in true form on the British Pullman services out of Victoria, prior to her decommissioning for refurbishment. The real stars of the show were however 70000 'Britannia' and 60163 'Tornado', which powered multiple 'Torbay Express' services to Kingswear along the sunny Sea Wall, each performing without a hitch.
In addition to 2015's videos, I've also included a 'lost' video from 2013 which sadly didn't make it into the 2013 or 2014 videos, that being of LMS Black 5 44932 hauling the 'Great Britain' tour into Preston on what was a somewhat unimpressive tour, but not as spectacularly bad as 2015's one, where due to the steam ban, 'Britannia' only worked the first leg, then was piloted by a Class 66 for the second leg, only for the tour operator to give up on the idea of steam haulage and decided a Class 66 and Class 67 diesel was a good substitute. This, combined with the cancellation of many tour legs in the Scottish Highlands, a troublesome breakdown on Shap, and a re-routing that brought the tour into the wrong London terminus, resulted in a majority of the passengers leaving the tour before they were halfway through!
But aside from that, it has been an impressive year for steam, if not highly eventful. But still, sit back and enjoy this somewhat shorter but still fantastic collection of British steam locomotives in full swing!
The combination of stunning British scenery and magnificent steam engines is magical.
A brilliant quality film, With excellent shots and sounds. Greatly enjoyed seeing. Thanks Rory
Excellent camera work recording these trains, information was a great addition. I remember reading about Tangmere. Liked and Happy New Year, a bit late.
Great compilation...well done sir!
in India the steam engines should be brought again in some premium trains. The journey with steam engines is a very unique. The railway authorities should think over it seriously is my earnest request.
Nice Video!
Why do a lot of these steam specials have a diesel attached to the rear? I am actually asking genuinely curious. Is it a requirement for mainline running or something?
It’s not at all it’s just a common thing to have a backup disiel unit because as you know steam trains brake down a lot
,what great footage, how comes I see Pullman pulling 13 coaches, with no problems, and yet today these so called more modern traines are only pulling 6-7 and there smaller coaches, ? Well if progress you can keep it, our railway's are a total sham now, good video
good film but there was some that weve seen on the video more then once like 60163 tornado
Great video as always. You always seem to get footage that's so professional it wouldn't look out of place on the BBC, which is why I was wondering if you would let me use some of your footage in my free mini online documentary series 'Things a train fan would know' (here's an episode: ruclips.net/video/-FtWnns4_J8/видео.html ). You could call it a bit of a collaboration actually, as while you provide me with your brilliant footage, I'll give you full well deserved credit for the your footage used and I'd call you a contributor to the series in every episode where your footage is used and refer viewers to channel (so you get more viewers and together we can grow the RUclips based railway community). Thanks for considering this and I look forward to hearing from you.
