I wasn't even born when he passed away. The impact his pure music has made on the next generations is just amazing. MMI and MDR are still my all-time faves.
Oh, what a fascinating and interesting talk about Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Madurai Mani Iyer and his music by Sangeetha kalanidhi Sri Sanjay Subrahmanyan! It brought back memories of my Sangeetha Kala Acharya Sri T N Bala. During my music lessons, Bala mama (we all called T N Bala as Balamama) often spoke about his guru Sri Mani Iyer. It took me several years to understand and appreciate what my teacher said about Mani Iyer Sir. He often burst in tears while he talked bout his teacher and said emphatically that there was no musician comparable to his guru. Bala mama's wife, Mrs. Susheela Bala, was the same way: they both revered Mani Iyer. My teacher could even sing like MMI, imitating his voice. I learnt Carnatic vocal from Balamama for nearly thirty years. Thank you very much for uploading this video. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, PA
I was a student of Madurai Mani iyer,’s sishyar Sethurama iyer.(1953 to 1965)Every year on Vijayadashami day we did Guru mariyadai to MMI and he gave concerts.I had that opportunity and he sang Vellai thamarai Poovil iruppal. O such a golden memories I will never forget in my life🙏
That’s such a wonderful coincidence. My mother Charumathi also learnt under Sethurama IYER and has referred to this event. You must be knowing each other.
Namaskaram...Now I am 84..I was a great of MMI Listened his concerts both in Madras and Bombay..Tears welled my eyes while listening to SS's presentation..🙏
I am all in tears when someone just talks about Shri MMI as sometimes I won’t be able to consume the divinity and depth in his music just after hearing for 2 minutes. For all that I was born after 7 years of his leaving his mortal remains. I am sure his music will live for several hundred years.
My father was a great Madura Mani Iyer fan. He used to have tapes of Mani iyer and listen, he could imitate the innate Mani iyer's phrases. Your talk brought back nostalgic memories. Thanks a lot
Congratulation Sanjay Subramanyam. Excellent analytical presentation about the genius Madurai Mani Iyer. I am a great fan of Madurai Mani Iyer. 1) He was indeed the most popular admired musician time to reckon with. 2) A great singer with unmatched quality enriched with utmost perfection. 3) Amazing alabana depicting the essence of the ragam in its true perspective. 4) Be it Thodi, Kambothi, Karagarapriya, Biravi, he used to deliver with enormous weight and depth. 5) Expansive and exhaustive sangathis with subtle variations. 6) Very elaborate and well structured Niraval that would be scintillating and thought-provoking. 6) Super fast swaram and extraordinary manodharman, yet landing in perfect sruthi and layam a real treat to ears. 7) The application of Gamagam was his specialty that used to mesmerize the audience. 8) An Icon of Carnatic music; he is indeed a source of inspiration and a roll model to today's musicians. 9) His music is so powerful and penetrative such that the audience gets completely engrossed into it. 10) His master pieces include Eppo Varuvaro, Maa Janaki, Chakkani Raja, Mariverathi, Kapaali, Sarasasamadhana, English Note.......and so on. Great. Who can sing like him. There is no comparison at all. Listening to Madurai Mani Iyer Kacheri is an aesthetic divine experience that is literally beyond expression. PRANAMS TO THE GREAT SOUL 🙏
MMI, extraordinary and amazing a musician. No words are enough to describe him. Also its my view that no musician could encapsulate the soul of a raagam in the shortest time possible. Only a Genius can do that. Two men who were never part of any politics were MMI and MDR.

you spoken so well on the great Master Madurai Mani Iyer. prompts me to listen to you again and again. You are right Sanjayji, In my young days (now pushing 85) in Bombay in the 1960s we were a group of die-hard Mani Iyer fans. I used to give an excuse and attend two days Shanmukhananda concerts (then) of our idol. Once you hear you are enslaved. I'm a fan of yours and noticed Iyer's influence in you many a time. Your Note is tear-jerking for oldies.
Excellent analysis of Sri MMI. Heard about the maestro from my mother and maternal uncle's who were a big fan of him. Was fortunate to hear Lp records. What a musician par excellence.
I am aged 62 and as you have elaborated about Mani Iyer singing it took me to a time where i used to eagerly wait for the concert of Mani Iyer in AIR. Unique style and extraordinary interpretation of swara. Once you hear a shanmugapriya of Mani Iyer you will never forget that ragam. Mahan

In the late 80s I had the privilege of driving Shri Jayaram and his children from Bharthi Vidya Bhavan, London to my home for breakfast. I played a recording of MMI, LGJ & CSM radio program. It had Ramabhakthi, Samajavaragamana. After listening to the first few sangathees, Shri Jayaraman said avar swaragnani. When we reached home, Shri Jayaraman asked me to continue playing the tape. Tears of joy rolled down his cheeks. Spoke very highly of MMI. On the way back we enjoyed listening to a classic suddha saveri, this time with PSP. Shri Jayaraman was pointing out the nuances to his children. Man Music Interface is how I like to remember the great.
Thoroughly enjoyed the tribute to Madurai Mani Iyer! Thank you for sharing such thoughtful anecdotes! His style was indeed so unique. A great musician of those days, but whose music will live on for a very, very long time.
Brilliant shot, that is what we explode when ever a cricketer hit 6 or 4. Brilliant note , that is what we experienced whenever we heard Sri Madurai Mani Iyer. For carnatic music that was a golden era.
Great Sanjay. Thank you for remembering Madurai mani Iyer. I am a big fan of Madurai mani Iyer. I would have listen to his concert live atleast 25 times. I love his Eppo varuvaro, kandan karunai puriyum, Sarasa samadana, his sankaraparanam notes my god un believable legend.
Got reminded of our Mayavaram days, and Sri Mani Iyers concerts in a small hall, in the famous Kaaluyagudi hotel. Though way back, very impressionable age of our days over there.Great anecdotes
Sanjay subramanyam's high regards for senior musicians and the way he brings out the essence of their music in short yet faithful charecteristics of the stalwarts, make this series most watchable and nostalgic.
Dear sir, your presentation on the Great Mani Iyer is spellbinding. As you said I came to know about MMI through T V S concert especially " Eppo varuvaro" & the English note. I had the opportunity of attending Ragasudha concerts ofTVS ankaranarayanan

as a vellaikaran who speak tamil conjum conjum i am always fascinated by the way tamils like Sanjayiar switches into Tamil for what i believe is greater intimacy at certain point.....would fun to do a sociological study of folk of his educational and langugage level to analyze when and for why the switch is made, e.g. at 2:40, returning home into Tamil for illustrative example about Sethalapathi Balu....no way that example would be as warm or tender in english....🙂
Wow! Took me back in time. No discussion on maestros can be complete without a mention of The Great Mani Iyer. He took music to the uninitiated too and made them addicts to his style. The only thing that my brother wanted was to have Sri Madurai Mani Iyer's concert for his marriage reception. Since our parents knew him very well, he also agreed. The Bridegroom was sitting in the front row listening to the maestro! Such was our devotion to his singing
Thank you Sir for helping us go through those wonderful days ...as if we are travelling back in time. .. Thanks again for extending the On that Note to 7 minutes

On the note episodes are like individual Amat Chitra Katha Mahabharata series books….you listen to a story and then wait with anxiety and excitement for the next one. Which when Mahabharata was released by ACK, it was one book every few weeks. The waiting was frustrating and the reading was sheer pleasure. This is the same…..
Thanks Sanjay for this. You have taken me back to my childhood days when everyone in my village used to praise Madurai Mani Iyer and a lot of rasikas congregate at our house Thinnai to listen to Madurai Mani Iyer singing in AIR programme. One special request, why do not you perform a concert mimicking Mani Iyer as a mark of a tribute to that great musician. It will be a great opportunity for this generation of people to get to know what a great musician Shri Madurai Mani Iyer.
Soo nice to here this u r just great and we r also a biiig fan of Madhurai mani iyer d legend i like the swara kalpana of Brovabharama beautiful 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘
First ever song I listened in classical was by mmi vatapi ,his famous kamboji rtp level of kamboji and essence he bring is amazing. His unique style of singing is his trademark

So nice that you have taken the time to remember great stalwarts like Madurai Mani Iyer. His trademark swarm was " MaDaDaNiPa Pa,Pa x 2 Ga Ga " K Balasubramaniam s/o MAK Bhagavathar 🙏
The way in which you have narrated is like a voice of me. Since you are genius you explained musically and technically. Hats off to you for bringing the brilliance.
I listened to Taaye Yashoda for the first time at my cousin sisters wedding and i liked the ragam and song so much that i kept on humming and on hearing that my mom told me there was a musician called Madurai Mani Iyer and you have to listen to his Taaye Yashoda and the way he sings Kaalinil chilambu …. You can literally picturise little krishna dancing in front of you !! From that date Taaye Yashoda = Madurai Mani Iyer for me forever ❤️❤️
Brilliant Sanjay in a capsule of MMI's glory. I remember distinctly in 1964 or 65, he came to perform a kutcheri in Madrassi School in Lodi Road and people used to come from all over Delhi in bus. The concert will always begin at 4.25 pm on Sunday and MMI sang for almost five hours as had to close the concert because people will had to catch the last bus to various destinations. The concert used to held in open area with a pandal and he will sing all his favourite songs to keep the crowd intact. What a genious he was !!!!
Some how I feel,

You have a way of story telling that keeps us wanting for more. 👍Nice anecdotes. Keep them coming.👏👏
marivere - shanmughapriya i first heard from TVS and was spellbound. thanks for this
Truly enjoyed tribute to Mani Iyer Sir. Thank you so much Sanjay Sir for sharing such a beautiful Note🙏🙏
Yeppo varuvaro song will always bring tears in my eyes
What an excellent rendition. Brought tears in my eyes. Thank you so much.

My father was a big admirer of mani Iyer. Some songs are patent mani Iyer.
So nice that you have taken the time to remember great stalwarts like Madurai Mani Iyer. His trademark swarm was " MaDaDaNiPa Pa,Pa x 2

Sir u have company! U hear that song million times and yet there is th
Sir the episode on the great legend was brilliant. God bless 🙏🙏
Excellent description of the legend! My dad use to say that one critic had written that ' Mani mani dhan'
I would like to hear your experience about Dr.Madurai Somu ON THAT NOTE Sir
Brilliant Sanjay in a capsule of MMI's glory. I remember distinctly in 1964 or 65, he came to perform a kutcheri in Madrassi School in Lodi Road and people used to come from all over Delhi in bus. The concert will always begin at 4.25 pm on Sunday and MMI sang for almost five hours as had to close the concert because people will had to catch the last bus to various destinations. The concert used to held in open area with a pandal and he will sing all his favourite songs to keep the crowd intact. What a genious he was !!!!
👏👏👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great to listen from you Sanjay..
Some how I feel, 🙏🙏🙏🙏
