You need to pay royalties for both the song itself and the performance of that song separately. By using covers they save a lot of the cost of licensing the real known song, and while karaoking most people won't notice.
So, to answer the question about why they are weird covers, there's actually two different portions of each music track in existence you can license. You can license the arrangement, or you can license the performance. The "performance" license is essentially giving you the rights to play the studio recording, whereas an "arrangement" license gives you the ability to play the musical arrangement/sheet music/tabs/whatever and perform it live or make your own recordings, but you don't have access to play the original recording. This is how bands like Disturbed are able to put out a cover of The Sound of Silence, and how the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games were able to get cover versions of very popular songs. Also, historically the arrangement licensing is *significantly* cheaper than the performance licensing. For some bands, by a factor of 10x or more. I'm actually curious how much money they actually made on this machine, given the bananas amount of songs it has and has high scale artists like Taylor Swift in it. I can't imagine margins were very high at all, even at this kind of insane price point.
Interesting. I didn't know about the two separate licence types, and thought the performance licences were the only ones available and that it was just cheaper to licence the 'performance' of covers.
@@kbhasi Yeah its an interesting concept, and it all comes down to the money at the end of the day. Whoever is “playing” their part on the track may not be deserving of 1/4’th of the entire tracks royalties - are they a hired gun, are they playing a part thats only in a song for 30 seconds, or are they one of the founding members of the band? Plus, there are some thoughts of the whole producer/mixer ecosystem getting a songwriting credit, but not a performance credit - but sometimes they do cause they filled in a punch in riff after the band flew home and the track just needed 10 seconds of bass re-recorded - its extremely simple in concept but wow does it get insane very quickly.
There's actually a whole thing with this type of stuff with the song Call on Me by Eric Prydz, which if I remember correctly was taken from a 2002 live with Cassius and Together (which consists one of the members from Daft Punk)
36:06 been working on the Prologue 21 a bit recently, and it does this as well with it's songs and video clips from the CD changer. Some songs do seem to prefer defaulting to certain clips, but are anywhere from spot on to hilariously weird. The Sakura Wars main theme will usually default to older Japanese buildings and cherry blossoms, but I've also gotten WWII clips of planes being shot down behind other upbeat game soundtracks and guys in black jumpsuits dancing to psychedelic giraffes paired with classical music.
The 🎤 came with Wii U Sing and was compatible also with some Just Dance installments for a sing-along, that has no real purpose other than detecting the sound coming to the microphone and reflect the volume level in a “noise bar” when a song was playing

This is so bizarre in every way possible: the machine itself, how it's built like if a crazy inventor in his garage got some parts and a wii u from a store and glued it all together, the intented audience, and the price!. Wow. it's so niche, how can it be a good bussiness model?. And the people buying it could probably do the same with a laptop and a couple of usb microphones. It's like bulding a space shuttle when all you need is a car. It's fascinating!!!.
Wow, what an odd device. I'm very impressed with how they made everything work together. The red and white RCA Jack's make a lot of sense because it's the most common connection to use between a head unit and something like a record player or cassette deck on a home sound system. There are "superior" options like Optical aka TOSlink for audio delivery but RCA is a legacy standard in that world. Thank you for such an interesting video Adam. It's ok you don't know a lot about music, you just haven't found what you really like yet.
We had the Joysound Wii U app in the UK and we used it a fair bit, had 2 mics (one from sing party?) You could purchase time and sing to your hearts content for the duration, had a great selection of songs.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have completely standardized karaoke songlists across all systems over there. And like, people just _know_ the numbers of the stuff that they want to play and can just reliably punch them into any system and have the song pop in (if available). Y'know, kinda like JAV.
