  • As we continue to raise awareness for Osteoporosis Awareness Month, I want to invite you to join me in day 20 of the one small thing for better bone health challenge. In this video, we will be exploring the benefits of using a weighted vest to strengthen the spine and improve bone health.
Weighted vests are a great tool for adding resistance to weight-bearing exercises, which are vital for building stronger bones. Incorporating a weighted vest into your routine can help increase the intensity of your workouts, leading to greater bone density and reduced risk of fractures.

Greetings. I'm playing catch up on your video challenge. Thank you so much for all this valuable information you're providing. I walk almost daily for 30-45 minutes a day.
In recent months I incorporated a 10 pound weighted vest. When I 1st started with the weight vest it was challenging!! I had to cut my length of time. Little by little I increased the duration. Now I'm back to my 30-45 minute walks. I have also added walking sideways on both legs, walking backwards (very carefully), rasing my leg a couple of feet in the air and stomping. It's quiet a workout.
I also do weight lifting at least 3x a week. In between days I alternate with resistance bands and Yoga workouts. 💖

@@verdad1234 The vests that have adjustable weights are nice because you can take weight out or add it as it works best for you. This kind is more expensive then ones that just have a set weight. It is really important to have good posture while you are wearing a weighted vest to make sure that it does not reinforce less than ideal posture. I hope that helps ❤

You'd think that carrying an extra 4 stone as I did for a couple of years would have the same effect as wearing a weighted vest. Maybe the benefit is in taking off the vest for a time before putting it back on?

Having extra weight can contribute to bone health... The thing to consider is what is happening with the extra weight. Is the extra weight being used to build stronger muscles that can pull on bones? When you wear a vest while yo are doing something it is different than just wearing a vest while say sitting and not doing something. When you wear the vest for a particular task your muscles are engaged and this helps to build stonger muscles and bones. If you have extra weight and you are exercising in ways that will convert fat to muscle then it does pull on bones and can be beneficial. There are a lot of nuances to it all. I hope htis helps ❤

What's your opinion about wearing a weighted belt vs a weighted vest? I find the belt more comfortable. Also, what recommendations do you have about how heavy the vest or belt should be?

If you like wearing a weighted belt better, I would go with it! You are less likely to have the issue of it bearing down on you with less than ideal posture which is a good thing.
The amount of weight that you use is personal. I like the variations wear you can adjust the weight best becuase then you can add some more weight in before you need to purchase something new. A good gauge might be to start with how much weight you use with your dumbells and then when that becomes easy increase it from there ❤

I’ve had compression fractures is it safe for me?

This depends on what your posture is like while wearing a vest. If you can wear a vest with good posture, then yes it is a safe thing to do post compression fracture. If you can't wear a vest with good posture then don't wear a weighted vest because it would add additional weight in ways that are not good for you.
Try putting a backback with a couple of books in it to see how your posture is before you spend any money.
Things can get better even after having compression fractures ❤
