In my in-depth review of Ratchet & Clank 2 I talk about my experience of replaying this game for first time since about 17 years. Is the game as great as I remember?
Ratchet & Clank 2 was developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 2 in the year 2003. The HD Version on PS3 was released in 2012.

Great review dude! When i was a kid back in 06 i remember the tiny planets used to cause me headaches the way the camera tilted based on your movement.

Just like the first game, Going Commando has a lot of nostalgia value for me as well because I mostly would replay the first and second game the most compared to Up Your Arsenal and Deadlocked (not that those games were bad of course lol). I remember when I got stuck in the fist R&C game on my first playthrough back in 2005, I just went to Going Commando and I think I beat it first before going back to the first game and beating it before I jumped into Up Your Arsenal so I could be caught up since in those days, I thought I needed to beat the games in order understand the story lol. Going Commando definitely improved the shooting combat, the strafing feature made the combat feel so much smoother and comfortable and the weapon selection this time around was so fun and most of the weapons were useful and satisfying to use. I'll also say that while I know a lot of people didn't like the spaceship gameplay, I thought it was actually pretty decent as the controls were responsive and the ship's combat felt simple enough. But yeah some of the missions did drag on too long, I won't deny that. Hoverbike racing was also fun. It was annoying at first but once you got the hang of how it controlled, racing felt like a breeze and I was bummed that we never saw these come back in later games.
The desert section for crystal hunting is EASILY one of the most nostalgic moments in gaming for me. I remember sitting down and doing that mission during summer vacation back when I was 14, good memories. I can understand why you didn't find it enjoyable, I think the only reason I enjoyed it aside from being a kid with more time on my hands back in those days, I remember also using that quest as a way to level up my weapons which didn't make it feel as "chorish" since I was killing two birds with one stone.
This also extends to the Gladiator challenge. I think I actually did beat all the challenges but yeah the last challenge was a nightmare (in the good challenging way) but again, a great way to level up your weapons and for a kid who had lots of time on summer vacation? Perfect LOL.
And Planet Dobbo gives me PTSD, I remember that was one of the levels I got stuck at for a good while and took me a few tries to get through 🤣 Also when you said that that was the level where you noticed how weak the old weapons were, it really does work into the plot's narrative showcasing how the Gadgetron weapons are really outdated compared to the new and improved ones being made by MegaCorp lol. Planet Snivelak is another PTSD nightmare as well. I still remember encountering the "bridge of death" (I called it) with those tanks the first time I played and was scared shitless haha Again, died a lot of times there which is what prompted me to upgrade my weapons at the Gladiator challengers lol.
I agree that Ratchet's voice sounds pretty good and at this point in time James Arnold Taylor has voice him for so long that it's hard to see anyone else voicing him. That being said, I also get what you mean that Ratchet does tend to sound a bit duller and doesn't have that "oomph" factor that Mikey Kelley was able to give him in the first game. I don't mind Ratchet being nicer because to me it works narratively. Like I felt that the reason why Ratchet was a jerk in the first game was because he was lonely and seemed to not have anyone in his life who cared about him until he met Clank and got to explore the galaxy which helped ease his bitterness. At least that's how I see it and thankfully he stlll had a bit of snarkiness at the game went on so I think t was a nice balance.
I do get where you were coming from with the music. Some of the songs that did stand out to me were the themes for Planet Todano (awesome guitar), Planet Boldan Silver City, and the Planet Maktar Nebula but overall the whole OST was not as memorable as the first game's. Instrumentally, the quality is definitely good and flows well enough but yet a lot of the themes just didn't have that extra experimental factor that the first game's music had which made it not as catchy.
Narrative-iwse I do think that the first game had the better story but I really appreciate the continuity established from that game into this one. I liked hearing about what happened to Gadgettron and going to Clank's apartment to pick up two of the most prominent gadgets that we used in the first game, it just felt like a nice throwback while acknowledging how their lives changed since the ending of the first game. I also enjoyed the character of Angela Cross, she was awesome and it's a shame we never saw her again. But yeah the story while not as impactful or as interesting (in my opinion) compared to the first, it was still good and pretty funny.
I agree that the first game is easily better as a whole game but the sequel was a fun experience and it still deserves the likeness and love that it gets
I'm finally getting around to a response to your wonderful and long comment. Thanks for sharing your experience with this game. I feel we agree on most things. And I totally get why someone would like the Desert section. I was too impatient back then and that hasn't changed much :D
@@GFrom Haha no problem, my comments do tend to be pretty long so i totally get it lol. And for sure, like I mentioned the only reason why the desert wasn't so bad in my eyes was because I was a patient teenager who was bored during summer vacation, I don't think I would've been forgiving to it if I played it as an adult LOL

When you get the rocket boots on your feet it makes it super easy to traverse the desert world and collect crystals
That's true. The rocket boots were very helpful on Planet Grelbin. Sadly couldn't change my overall opinion on the collect-a-thons

Great review, disagree on the meteor gun, probably the most OP gun in the game other than the ryno once you got a lock on mod with it.
Ratchet and clank 2 was a great game and my favorite of the Ps2 games. Surprise you never got the RYNO guns. 2s RYNO was awesome.

@@lordshenfan6625 I think I've only played the Challenge Mode on "Nexus" and the 2016 Remake. Maybe someday I'll replay the older games with the better weapons.

@@lordshenfan6625 Same. I was able to get the RYNO on my 3rd playthrough of the game back in the day but like you, I also was a patient child who had a whole summer vacation to kill lol.
I prefer this game more tgan the original and i like the collectable mission to but i like the third one even more

I'm stuck on the first level of Thug Rendezvous, I cannot for the life of me stop the ships from getting behind me and killing me asap, no matter what tricks I pull or dodging I do. The fact that no health or shield pickups drop from any asteroids or enemies make this impossible. Any help or tips would be appreciated

it's referring to the salaries of the customers. When everyone gets their salaries they start buying again.
