    I am claustrophobic and have had so many MRI's I cannot even count them all. However, this Friday will be my first brain scan. In a cervical neck scan, they put a cover across your neck which makes me uncomfortable, but I have found that, all in all, if you take the anxiety (calming) meds, and keep your eyes closed, you can do this and will be happy that you did it. The MRI images can really assist your doctors find the issues and help you feel better faster. Good luck to all and don't cancel.

    Just had it yesterday--of the head. A "sic-fi torture chamber of sounds" just about says it all. LOUD, clicking, hammering, knocking, banging, screeching--did I say LOUD? Even with custom ear plugs, foam ear muffs over those & then the metal helmet, it was LOUD. There were pauses in between the shattering sounds & three times someone said my name, and "are you okay?" I stayed rigidly still except for a cough that I couldn't suppress any longer. Frightening, but so glad to have this medical masterpiece for all it reveals.

    My husband just got one and he's a big guy. Also being claustrophobic didn't help. He wore ear protection and laid down with his head in a helmet thing. Then they pulled the front of the mask down like a window shade. He closed his eyes ...hard. then the noise started. He said it was bad for him anxiety and everything...and he prayed and talked to God. He made it. You will too. CANCER SUCKS. God bless.

    i get these done twice a year for a brain tumor. it’s exactly like described except it’s a lot tighter space. i feel like i’m inside a coffin. my best advice is to close your eyes and breathe deep and realize it’ll be over as quickly as it started.

    This video made it sound so much more pleasant than it is. And that machine also has far more space than most. My shoulders were basically touching each wall. It was complete torture.

  • @verumfides3389
    @verumfides3389 6 лет назад +7

    This machine is very open compared to the MRI machine used on me. Many people here have commented about this machine, referring to claustrophobia without realising that there is a much more compact 90% enclosed machine, as technology advances they improve on things, this machine is part of that improvement.
    Before your stupid mouths about dis-respecting those people, consider first, the size of your body, how tall you are how close you are to the top of the machine and the enclosed length of the machine. The machine I had mine done on was a full length enclosed machine, I am 6ft4 and I have to hold my arms above my head to fit my arms and shoulders in the machine, and that so that they could scan my liver last time.
    The noise actually sounded fine to me, as it gave a regular rhythm, and while music might be better, some people have remarked as if wearing headphones or ear protection is some arduous task they have to put up with, actually you can do it old school like the rest of us.
    I lasted for 30 minutes in a scan that should have taken 10-15 minutes, just when I was about ready to push the button, the test was over, the only thing that helped me in the MRI was being able to look over my shoulder and be able to see the light coming in from the only un-enclosed part of the machine.
    Since then my specialists want me to have additional MRI testing for my neck, back etc. this will mean going in headfirst, now put yourself in my position, think of being completely enclosed, like a coffin, unable to breath properly, movement restricted and your face pressed up against the top of the machine, think of my measurements and dimensions...oh and don't think about this little doughnut machine, think about a fully enclosed machine, and then maybe you might feel a little claustrophobic. It is easy for people who do not have the condition to pass judgement on others, it is an act of courage to be able to put yourself through this process when you are genuinely claustrophobic, I couldn't do it, can you?

      Verum Fides same here, mate. I make sure to get 10 mg Valium prior. I have the tech walk me in backward so I don’t see the tube. I lay down, put a washcloth on my eyes, and ask them to turn the fan inside on HIGH. It dries out my sinuses, but if I don’t feel the breeze, it’s like a coffin in there. The cool breeze with my eyes covered makes it mentally easier, and the 10 mg Valium makes me drowsy and drugged. I don’t need calm, I need semi-SEDATED.
      Afterward I sit in the waiting room for about an hour before heading home on the subway. That’s just to become more alert after the Valium.

    So many doctors have told my mom my brother has ADHD, ADD, and OBD. On Wednesday, he's getting an MRI scan to see what's up with his brain. I did research and it turns out his behavioral disorders are caused by the frontal lobe of his brain not developing properly. This is our last resort, before medication, which we are against because it is pure drug. Keep my brother in your prayers please, he's just five.

      ADD/ADHD are basically the same thing ? You'd only be diagnosed with one or the other, as ADD is ADHD but without the hyperactivity and OBD is usually linked with ADHD as a co-morbidity - it's not to do with the development of the brain (thats more Autism related and other conditions) as to why those occur , it's thought to be linked with an excessive amount of dopamine being produced in the brain which is why the common treatment is stimulants as they have the opposite effect on someone with ADHD than they do to a person if they were to take them who doesn't have ADHD - though you can get non-stimulant medication for ADHD that doesn't work quite as well but can still have somewhat of an affect (you can also try small amounts of caffeinated drinks to see what affect they have be it that he doesn't intake over 150/200mg of caffeine, or theres therapy sometimes thats offered as an alternative treatment - although if it's not really severe/impacts life significantly then you may well choose to go as you already are). Strange really, usually for something like that, MRI's aren't usually performed because of the cost / other easier ways of confirming diagnosis etc. ? Where are you from may I ask? I have ADHD myself amongst ASD and other complex needs, meds were my first option and I'm glad cause they've made my life much easier. It's not like the drugs illegal if you're getting it for the right reasons and prescribed by a specialist/medical professional :)

    I just had a brain and neck mri today. I declined contrast because of the side effects it may cause. It was not uncomfortable at all but the knocking noises do make u feel a little uneasy at times. Depending on images, the machine works in 5 min intervals. Mine lasted 20 min. It's very important that you remain still... even try not to cough... otherwise they'll have to restart that interval depending on where you're at in the exam time. Good luck to you all on your findings.

      One day, I woke up with severe headaches and became dizzy when I stood up... even while lying down sometimes. Faint feeling. It lasted 7 days straight. Then, I was prescribed Naproxen and it slowly went away. ER doc said it just came from a viral infection/ cold virus that my children recently had. So, everything came back clear. Hope all is well with you.

    I recommend an anti anxiety for anyone who is concerned about how they will react. If you're already concerned then I think you may have a problem. One Xanax will do. I was ok until they put that thing over my head. It's like being trapped inside being trapped. I was not sedated but will be next time because it was an anxious 35 minutes.

    I don't get what the fuss is about, I watched these videos last night and read comments and got myself nervous for the scan today. Then again I'm not claustrophobic, but I did find the scan easy and with the earplugs the sound wasn't loud, and I suffer from tinnitus but it was fine. I was a lot more nervous about the injection which people don't seem to be bothered about. They took three attempts to hit a vein, that was far worse, but I do hate needles, objectively speaking it wasn't particularly painful just made me queasy thinking about a dye entering my body.

      lou lou I know this is late, but for future medical exams or procedures that require you to remove piercings, get fishing line in the gauge you need and tie it into the piercings. My wife did this for 2 hospitalizations. Fishing line is fine with the hospital, doesn’t interfere with any machinery, and kept her piercings open. One stay was 8 days long. She did need to put in slightly smaller gauge rings when she got home, but after a few days the holes were fully back to normal size. But that was for 8 days. Her shorter stay caused no shrinkage.

    It's helpful to have them put a cloth over your eyes, so if you open them, you aren't looking at the cage over your face. Look around and inside the machine before you start. Helps you to realize that it's not a tomb. I can't understand why people can lie down in bed, but they can't lie down in a machine for 30-60 minutes. Nothing bad is going to happen to you while you are in the machine. It's great technology, so just relax, and be happy that there is no radiation involved.

    My doctors flat out refuse to give me one :( iv suffered headaches every day for over a year now. I think there were 3 days I didn't wake up with one. My speech and motor skills some days are appalling. My memory and behaviour has gotten worse and changed according to other people as well as myself. I suffer dizziness and pressure in the head with it when doing anything! But according to my neurologist that's nothing to do with neurology. So iv been bounced back and forth. Laughed at at one point! And messed around for over a year and for nothing. They refuse. So I'm trying to just go private. Gotta love the NHS. Refuse to do it till they pay :(

    mine was to be today, but with severe vertigo to lay on the table for 30 minutes and be lightly sedated I didn't do it, cause I CANT lay completely flat no matter being sedated or not I would get sick, wish there was another way to get the scan done I DEFINITELY need to know what's going on with me and these headaches I'm having and what's causing my vertigo :'(

      Monica Truesdale there are new machines now that are standing MRI’s. If you can stand up for the exam, ask your doctor to send you to a center which has the new machines. They finally realized that some medical conditions make it difficult, if not impossible for some patients to lay on those tables.

    • @BethanyProwse
      @BethanyProwse 4 года назад +2

      @@amanadawngthug Ahh, no it's not, and it's ok to be nervous, I've had about 4 since that first comment, it might differ slightly but if your claustraphobic - mention it before you go in or ring them beforehand, let them know - they may be able to give you some breathing techniques and even maybe give you a light sedative to calm your nerves, you basically get called in, and they go over what your there for, general medical history - make sure you don't wear anything like jewellery/metal etc. then get changed into these scrubs they provide, check your height/weight - unless you can tell them, then they sit you down on the bed, and you have two spongey type ear plugs in, then have headphones over the top to help block out the noise - I chose to just listen to the latest hits on Spotify, but you can chose a specific playlist or take your own music usually if you want just to lower the sound (it changes as time goes on - lasts around 40 minutes give or take). Try to keep as still as possible, you go in and theres not a lot of room - but I just concentrated on the mirror which shows you the people on the other side/the part outside the scanner, so I wasn't focusing on being inside a small space... and they usually cover you with a blanket and give you a ball kind of thing to hold, so if at any time - cause obviously they cant hear you, that you do find it gets to much, you squeeze that, and they'll bring you straight out. They usually talk in your ear at short intervals, just iike "your going great, not long now etc." and then giving you a brief idea of what they're doing and so forth. That's how mine have all gone anyway....

    • @jakeornot6306
      @jakeornot6306 6 лет назад

      More specifically - is the technologist certified in MRI, and at what level. In radiology of all types, "Registered" or "Certified" are meaningless unless a patient asks very specific questions. Most of the time, the patient is considered difficult for having asked. But it is your body. Nothing is radiology is as simple as washing one's hands. Minimal two-year degrees, plus additional training, experience, etc. and staff able to answer those questions without getting an attitude are vital to ensure quality radiology. The same is true for radiologists. No. They don't all read everything as well as the next Dr. The hell with it. Getting standards in anything these days is like asking a duck to mow your lawn.
