When you were walking to see the grocery getter for the first time, the truck you passed by with the military look which you didn't know what it was,is a Dodge M37. It is from the 1950s,very similar to a Dodge Power Wagon and the WWII Dodge WC series trucks. A very capable off road truck and a good project for you. A cummins 4bt drops right in and is a great fit! You would be impressed and enjoy such a truck in the desert!

Decades ago the private university I worked at had lots of these little things for the maintenance crew. We had flat beds like this one, some with slide in boxes, some had factory enclosed boxes, I recall one that had a factory dump box. None of them were street legal. The university was decent size, inner city, which had a couple public streets that ran through it. Every year the city would come up with some requirement for the University to run these little work trucks. At first, the city said they could run them on the city streets within the Campus boundary's. Next year, they all had to have passenger car license plates, the next year, the plates were all revoked, and they had to run them on the city sidewalks, and cross the streets at the crosswalks with all the students. Then the city said you cannot run them on the city sidewalks and you have to drive them on the private sidewalks or out in the street, with no license plates. It was an annual joke. Once the city changed their mind, we all started discussing what they would make us do next year.
They were great little trucks! Super reliable. Have fun with it.

660 cc is the max for a vehicle here in Japan to be titled as a "Kei-jidosha" or kei-car, with a yellow license plate. The taxes, bi-annual inspection, and insurance are cheaper. Many of these little white trucks, almost always white, are white plate 1.0L to 1.5L trucks.

I'd love to see you put 4WD in it, but probably some sort of LSD in the rear would be more sensible. I live in Indonesia, and there is a huge Daihatsu presence here. Toyota bought Daihatsu partly because of their toehold in Indonesia. We don't have any Kei trucks or cars here, but there are Daihatsu pickups everywhere. My wife drives a Daihatsu Sigra.

I use to import these from Japan to Atlanta back in the mid 2000’s for a client in North Ga. We would put them in our Foreign Trade Zone and he would weld a little piece of metal at the shifter so they would only have 1st, 2nd and reverse. This was what EPA allowed him to do in order to release the shipments. We would have 5-6 in a 40 ft container. He would then take them to his shop in North Ga and add lifts, bigger tires and sell to farmers in the area. Had a few vans come in that were cool, but mostly just the trucks. Always had fun driving them around the warehouse.
