The spellcard rules play a big role in it. Also, she developed a preference for limiting her own power use sometime after Mystic Square. My guess is she couldn't bear to lose at full power again.
Haha, yeah, they are very tempting to grab. I actually miss the 1up in this run which makes me a bit sad (usually I'm able to get it, but hell, it was way too risky this time). In a real run, I'd probably bomb in order to get it if I can't otherwise.

To put it in a silly but true way, it's like this: Magical girls barf beautiful waves of bullets at you, who is also a magical girl. You must avoid getting hit by the bullets. On a more serious note, half of the fun in this game is watching/dodging the bullet patterns, the other half is from the amazing characters, music, and storyline that ZUN (the sole creator of these games) comes up with. :)
No the truths is her grimoire isnt locked she can open when ever she want but if u notice that in the massage scene they will call marisa and reimu as "old friend" she didnt want to hurt her "old friend" that much they just battle because of fun
@TheStubdep Touhou is a game first and foremost. The anime is based off of it. ZUN has also published short novels and mangas to further explore the world of Gensokyo.
The aim of the game is, in all honesty, to reach the end of the game. Each title tends to have a silly story with some character doing something selfish so Reimu (or whatever heroine you choose) attempts to fix it. Thus, there really is no true "antagonist." Although, Utsuho can fit the bill since she actually sought world domination.
You don't have to watch it in HD, besides, that setting is a bit rough on older computers anyway. You can still tag the url with "&fmt=18" in order to get HQ. Also, EoSD is probably more random than PCB, but yeah, PCB has very few trick spots and cards. Lots of the game is just raw dodging.

@Your first question: because Alice doesn't use her Grimoire in the battle in PCB. It's locked.

I'd say I hit my peak around 6 or so months of play before retiring shortly after. I want to get back to playing, but I lack the motivation :(
