Norfolk state football team played 3 swac schools Grambling back in the 80s, and Grambling band got smash (badly) and Texas Southern twice and their band got torn up twice and Nsu football lost all 3 games. Now they will be playing Famu next year in Meac vs. Swac challenge. Now there's some tape on nsu and famu so this going to be great battle, but as for the football team, good luck
You are so right about the staying true to themselves kick. This is when bands are confident in their tradition and feel no need to imitate another college. HBCU band that are true to their traditions: The Jukebox, The FAMU Marching 100, NSU Legion Marching Band, Tenn St Aristocrats of Bands, NC A & T. I know that's not all, and there are some known Imitation bands I cannot put on this list. Most Bandheads know who they are.
Norfolk State is always on point. Southern sound is outstanding as well they are both amazing. Both dance team were beautiful ladies with poise. I loved both performances.

I hear more dynamics in the Jukebox's song than I do NSU. I hear the Jukebox's woodwinds more than I do NSU. I hear an overbearing of percussions from NSU than I do The Jukebox. So this balance thing, tell us what we are missing?
Fave two of mine as well. Was a dancer at NSU in '86 (Hot Ice) and now my cuz is captain (Go Dynasti!!) but always followed SU and their dancers. Love these two bands!

Norfolk came to New Orleans in the 90s and I remember loving that trumpet section. I have always been a Southern fan my whole life. I still think SU is untouchable, but I just wanted to show love to Norfolk St. for being consistently good over these years. I wish yall were in the SWAC so Southern and JSU had real musical competition outside of themselves. Well I guess Famu and BCC gotta be the whipping boys for SU and JSU
No. Just look at it as Norfolk vs the SWAC. Norfolk is a stand alone band. The other elite bands in MEAC had left , A&T, BCC, and FAMU. However as I said many times before A&T would often bite off the Legion's style.
Human Jukebox style was unique until everyone else adopted/bit their style. That's Dr. Isaac Greg's vision being flattered by near universal imitation.

We all knew what SU was gone bring… POWER!!! But to hear NSU be comparable in Power and Size, while maintaining a better balanced sound and to me cleaner technique. This was a great battle.

LOL the Legion has always been aggressive. Ask Grambling from 1976 about the Legion's aggression. Ask Texas Southern about Norfolk in Houston and in Cali in the 2000s

Emery L Fears who recently passed this year is responsible for what the Legion has become, from the discipline, how MDFS plays, how the flag lines perform, to the name of the Hot Ice dance line, the playing style and musicality, that all came from him. He hired Paul Adams in the 70s and he was at time the only the second African American in the American Bandmasters Association with Dr. Foster being the first. They were ranked as a top 10 HBCU (and only CIAA band) band in the 90s before Adams rejoined the staff in the 2000s. So that's Tuskegee, Howard and University of Michigan bloodline that you see. Adams and Sanford couldn't have pushed the band to where it is now without him since he laid the foundation.
NSU can probably out power all of the SWAC bands except for... SU Human Jukebox. And you know that's real talk. And the season hasn't even started yet. NSU looked good in the Rose Bowl Parade last year. I give them a lot of props as well as other HBCU bands. ASU, FAMU... But l stand by my Jukebox and the power we bring every year. So stay tuned in.
I've marched Drum Major at NSU In 05'. My line up is still SU, JSU then NSU. However IF we EVER get over 320 (40 bones, 20 Euphs, 20 Mellos, 45 Trumpets, 30 Tubas) We Will be a MFin problem. Drumline hands Down MDFS
@iWinBIG83 I have to agree. But when it comes to the size of a band. That's only a small part of what the judges look at. I like straight lines. A marching pace, coming in and out of drills like SU rather than pausing, sound, entertainment.. Band size is only for people who like to brag about.😁
@@iWinBIG83 I’ll scale down lower brass by a smidge. Say 30 bones and 15 Eups, but up trumpets to 50. Heavy lower brass equals 09. They were powerful, but lower brass had the authority.
Not missing anything at all…a stand band with nothing to give other than being loud…lackluster field shows that are “gimmicky”, same drills year end and year out, ok arrangements…the only thing they should brag about are the Dolls
