Flint MI AND Newark NJ still don't have clean water either. Communities with disproportionate power (fiscal/legal/political) are always under attack. Environmental racism is a REAL issue. Mesquite (wood) smoke IS NOT a toxic emission. So, while bus depots, garbage dumps, industrial farms and chemical processing plants in residential communities aren't their concern because the health consequences aren't happening to them. THIS restaurant is what they CHOOSE to be up in arms about?!? Meanwhile, lead, mercury, solvents, sewage, methane & carbon monoxide pollute the air, water, & soil causing traumatic injury, physiological & mental defects and finally fatalities among black and brown communities with no concern. But they CHOOSE to let that happen too. Definitely don't stop resisting the BS when you see it!
After they get this restaurant to leave they'll bring in the exact same thing and claim to have created the idea.

I've lived in Houston for 19 years. This is a historically black neighborhood. I was so happy to see a black business doing well in the neighborhood. It makes me very angry to hear white folks complain about a black business that is doing well. Meanwhile, a few blocks away from The Turkey Leg Hut is Axelrad. Axelrad is a Craft-beer join, which is white-owned and has a predominantly white clientele that no one complains about. It makes me very angry to hear white folks complain about The Turkey Leg Hut.

Years ago two black men opened a business outside of Memphis in Southaven MS. They were renting the building space. They became wildly successful and the landlord, a white man, pushed them out even though they paid the rent on time and opened up a similar business in the same space. He was hoping to capitalize on their success and poach their customers but by the grace of God their customers followed them to their new location. God don't like ugly.

I live in Tallahassee Florida, and the oldest neighborhood for African Americans in Tallahassee is called “Frenchtown”. Around 10 years ago they forced all the businesses on Macomb Street to sell their property at what they said it was worth, and they created townhouses, basically serving
F.S.U. students and employees, along with the “City of Tallahassee Renaissance Center” which is how they could force property owners in this community out. But mostly they built housing. Recently FAMU brought a community concert back to French Town the Friday before the every FAMU Rattler home football game and we are so excited because for FAMU Homecoming Parade it went through French Town since FAMU was FAMC and 2 years ago the parade could no longer go through French Town. It’s awful when they decide what had been ours is now theirs and we aren’t welcome. The emotion is sad and helpless, and I’m so happy someone leaked that letter (I cannot believe they wrote that stuff down and felt so empowered they didn’t worry that it could get in the hands of someone that doesn’t agree with them.

I've worked in community economic development and neighborhood planning for 30 years. When European Americans started to move back into African American communities I pleaded privately and publicly to African Americans to do everything possible to prevent these new groups from coming back into our communities and not support their endeavors. They told me they couldn't be mean spirited to these people. Unfortunately, we invited these colonizers into our spaces now they are running us out by the thousands in major cities. If we understood our history in relationship to these people, we would have understood everywhere they've gone they taken people's land, communities and county's.
Where still naive to the intent of these "nice white people". Haven't learned from history yet. This gentrification should be of no surprise. Once again African people are "behind the eight ball". This started on a visible level at least in thecmid 1990's if not a little before. The economic and political momentum is deeply in white favor at this point. Economic suppression. I met a woman a few years ago who told me that she was CCd on an email from her white neighbors accidentally. They were new neighbors who had recently gentrified a black neighborhood in Jersey City, New Jersey. It step by step instructions for how to harass the black HOA president out of her position. This is common and insidious and is happening in black neighborhoods everywhere. Why not just stay in neighborhoods with people who do what you do and live like you instead of bulking and harassing people Who have customs and traditions in their own neighborhoods for decades.

As an aside, I love the fact that the owner led off with the fact that her attorney notified their family. I'm sure they have had legal representation for a while but more and more businesses need to make sure they have legal representation on speed dial when these things happen. There are a lot of 'legal mechanisms' which can be used to make things difficult if you don't have the support structure (i.e. accountants, attorneys, business consultants, etc.) to fight against your established business practices.

The property in our neighborhoods cost less and is usually closest to the economic center or have the best public transportation to the economic centers in most cities. In some areas their parents and grandparents ran to the suburbs after WWII to distance themselves from us.... now they want back.
