what is B.C.?

It stands for basso continuo, an underlying bass line and chordal structure or progression in a piece of music. In Baroque music, it is sometimes played by a keyboard instrument, such as the organ you hear, but multiple instruments can also be used. (e.g. lute and viol), as the composer or players decide. Baroque music is quite flexible that way. B.C. is kind of like the rhythm section in a band. Well, that's my take on it, anyway.
