You were on point with it sounding like the eighties, because the song was written for the soundtrack of the 1984 movie "Against All Odds" from a song Collins had started in 1981 but hadn't finished. It was nominated for several awards, including an Oscar (won by Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance - Male, which it won.

He has quite an impressive catalog by himself, he also did amazing as the lead in Genesis i would dive into them as well. He also did the Disney soundtrack for Tarzan. "You'll be in my heart"always brings emotional feelings for me.

Phil is one of a hand full of singers, that makes singing look like a walk in the park. He wrote this song and sings it to perfection. No one can sing it like him. He was an incredible writer and singer with lots of hits. If you haven't checked out I don't care anymore. It's a must.
He is an amazing songwriter - he wrote this so I think that's why there is much more expression of emotion
"Easy listening" is a perfect way to describe Phil's voice. Silky smooth tone and conveys so much emotion with everything his voice touches.

My all time favorite break up song, me from Haiti her from Iran we met in Chicago school adult center learning English we hooked up there but I felt in love with her . I was about 19 years old she was 21 years old circumstances of life force her to move to California then I lose her since I was heartbroken. I listened to Phil Collins against all odd thousandth of time it reminds me of loosing her.

One of the greatest songs and strangest chord progressions of all time.
I recorded this off HBO back in the day, and wore out that VHS tape. Bought the VHS when that came out, and then wore that out. He took this down a key or more on later tours given all the high notes, so I think this is the best live version that comes closet to capturing the feel of the original. But all the songs on this concert special are amazing. Reaction or no reaction videos, I hope you find time to check the whole thing out. Amazing performance. My favorite live In the Air Tonight as well.

If that personal stuff had not happened to me at the time, I probably would never have made an album, and if I was to have made an album eventually, it probably would have been a jazz/rock thing. Great Reaction, as Always!! I love this tune and many others of Mr. Collins! One that makes his vocals ascend to new heights is the studio version of a Genesis song, "Home by the Sea!" A personal favorite of mine! I believe YOU would "Enjoy it Thoroughly!" Just saying.

Other versions seem 'over-dressed, this seems personal'. Nailed it. This came out of his first marriage divorce (his wife left him after saying she would not be there if he left on his very long tour with Genesis). He tried to get her back and even went to Canada to reconcile. No, it did not happen and this song resulted.
Phil Collins has an epic back catalogue and this is one of my favourites, it's so poignant. He wrote it about his divorce.

You might tackle 'I Don't Care Anymore' (angry Phil) or get a two-fer with Eric Clapton playing 'I Wish It Would Rain Down'. The video is hilarious, but the song is bluesy Phil. So many more to choose.

I always thought he was good at writing songs from a mature perspective, not too hyperbolic, just enough to get the emotion across.i recommend the song by him I Wish it Would Rain Down it's a similar sentiment and Eric Clapton on guitar features in the studio version

I really despise the "overdressing" you're talking about...I feel like it's desperation and 99% of the times takes away from everything that made the song great in the first place. You've definitely heard Phil before, I've commented on it and listed a ton of songs to look into lol Both as a solo artist and as part of Genesis. All the other reaction channels are doing "I Don't Care Anymore" right now. The catalog is so huge, and all of it brilliant.
Why the heck would you listen to the concert version first instead of the original recording which is way better? Now you have an impression of the song that is lesser than what it is
