Hi Davie, This pattern is just umbelievable, it has produced a lot of trout and chub for me, it is a safe bet on any water with caddis coming of. Thank you very much Davie for sharing it with me and everyone else :D. I have used deer hair for the wing and put only 4 legs on it for a more delicate footprint. Tight lines Davie and thanks again for the pattern . All the best, Tudor.
Hi Davie, I like this version of the Elk hair caddis, a good, long floater. And the vid with the Spey hackle "on the hoof ", great capture that. All the Best, Peter.
huh that's a pretty cool twist, I tied a couple the other day from a recipe I found on the net, just a dubbed body sans hackle and just a CDC feather as an under wing, I use 1 feather folded over into 3 thicknesses 'cause I'm a tightwad, seems to float fine in the water butt, so it should do well on the river, no hackle lets the body sit a bit lower in the water possibly giving the impression of an emerger or one that has got stuck in the surface tension... Tight lines!
Hi, Dave. Have you tried a Tom Thumb pattern in the UK? We use it to tremendous effect here in British Columbia, Canada. It's a great all around caddis and mayfly imitation.
Hi Davie, I am looking for something to imitate a case caddis. The river I fish is full of them and one of the odd trout I take from it, hads its stomack packed full of case caddis.
I'll be trying this tying and thanks so much for posting Davy. Its slightly different from the version i use re: use of CDC. Would you use floatant on this version?
Davie: I actually have a question. I believe you said that the dubbed body color was a “crackin’” color. I know that you meant an excellent color...however I have never seen that color Caddis and the wing color is usually quite similar to the body color; why two substantially different colors on this fly?
Dear Mr. McPhail, I saw that you were using a full length ceramic bobbin, and was just wondering what the company is that manufactures it is. Thanks, Davis
Hi Davis, Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, I use a Tiemco Heavy Duty Ceramic which I would highly recommend as I've used them for years... All the very best Davie www.fishingmegastore.com/tiemco-ceramic-bobbin-holder-heavy-duty~615.html
Hi there again Davie...You use a finishing tool..I have one but i think its too big can i get a smaller andwhere.....one or do I have to resort to a hand finish knot???
Hi David Martin, I use a Matarelli Whip Finisher which I have had since 1990 and I feel it's one of the easiest whip finishing tools you could use...Here is a link to one www.feather-craft.com/wecs.php?store=feacraft&action=display&target=RM004 All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, Another great video - really enjoying tying using your videos as tutorials. As a novice tyer and fly angler, I'm wondering how you think is best to store dry flies like caddis patterns so that the hackle does not become crushed? I have a few nice boxes that are ideal for nymphs but I'm not sure how best to store my dry flies. Cheers - keep up the good work! Steve
Hi Steve, I'm glad you are enjoy the videos and that they are encouraging you to fill a few boxes...I have attached a link to the Dewit fly boxes which I like to use, they are very light and you can see the flies easily through the boxes even when closed...Thanks again for the kind words... Davie, I really hope those silly legs make the fly more effective. The name is a good one because in my opinion they look silly on any fly I have seen them on. I really don't like them. I have no idea why! All tthe best, Sean
Hi Money Change, I used a Kamasan B170 size 12 which is a medium wire hook, any good dry fly hook will do for this fly...A Fulling Mill Short Shank Special has a wide gape and one that I like to use a lot as well... All the very best Davie...
Hi David Martin, What I do is to moisten my fingers then I wipe them dry so that I have a tiny bit of grip when I go to put on the dubbing, also to help this you have to make sure that the dubbing is well mixed..If you are still having problems mix in a finer dubbing like rabbit which will bind the coarser dubbing like seals fur or SLF a 50/50 is a good blend... I hope this helps you.. All the very best Davie

nice patern davie,,, thanks
Davie, I had a LAW vise. Now use a Jvice. Why do you tie with the jaw up at such an extreme angle???

Great, cheers Davie - they look good! I bet you have a a fair few of those filled!
Good to learn how you do things - thanks
Hi Davie, are the centipede legs the mini or the small version? Can't wait to ty this one!
Hi Brian,
It's been a while since I tyed this fly but if I remember right the centipede legs were small..
All the very best Davie..
Davie, I really hope those silly legs make the fly more effective. The name is a good one because in my opinion they look silly on any fly I have seen them on.
I really don't like them. I have no idea why! All tthe best, Sean
Davie, I may have missed it, but what hook size and type do your prefer for your elk hair caddis?--a wide gap dry fly hook?
Hi Money Change,
I used a Kamasan B170 size 12 which is a medium wire hook, any good dry fly hook will do for this fly...A Fulling Mill Short Shank Special has a wide gape and one that I like to use a lot as well...
All the very best Davie...
Many thanks for the details! I really enjoy your videos.
Davie ,you seem to have no trouble putting the dubbing on......when I put the dubbing on the thread it doesnt stay on....how do I remedy that???
Hi David Martin,
What I do is to moisten my fingers then I wipe them dry so that I have a tiny bit of grip when I go to put on the dubbing, also to help this you have to make sure that the dubbing is well mixed..If you are still having problems mix in a finer dubbing like rabbit which will bind the coarser dubbing like seals fur or SLF a 50/50 is a good blend...

Davie,
you can tie a fly on a larger hook without making the actual fly bigger. Just use the shank, the fish don't mind. All the best, Sean
