  • Video of the mighty Citi Field scoreboard as Edwin Diaz comes in to pitch the top of the 8th inning for the New York Mets against the Philadelphia Phillies at the Citi Field stadium, September 22, 2024. That's really the best way to describe this presentation.
I've been a New York Mets season ticket holder since 2012, and while I've shot videos from other locations in the ballpark, my home at the home of the Mets has been the first row of section 538, all the way out in center field. The Mets will be relocating me to a different location next year, so for what would be my final game of the year (unless they get into the postseason, which they probably will), I spent the last few innings in 538.
During the bottom of the 7th inning, with the Mets having a one-run lead, I noticed on the right field scoreboard that Edwin Diaz was warming up. I decided that if he comes into the game, I'd make a video of his "now pitching" graphics as shown on the mighty Citi Field scoreboard, along with the "Narco" fanfare that accompanies it.
From a technical standpoint, it wouldn't be a great video; I'm so close to the mighty Citi Field scoreboard that the top of it is cut off, and the platform, plexiglass and railings also obstruct the view. That's okay. As I'm wont to say, if you want perfection go watch someone else's video. At least there isn't anyone in the seats to my left, so I don't have to lean forward and hold my phone over the railing to get my video (which I could have done anyway, but I wanted the platform, plexiglass and railings in there).
So far, so good. The bottom of the 7th comes to an end, and I start filming. As the video begins, the logos of the two competing teams appear on the mighty Citi Field scoreboard, then disappears, and the screen goes dark. Then, a live shot of Diaz leaving the bullpen. At this point, some fans come down from higher rows, getting into my shot. I expected that - part of the cost of doing business, as it were.
What I didn't expect was that they'd stay on the platform, obstructing my view of the mighty Citi Field scoreboard. I quickly made an Artistic decision to keep filming anyway and leave it in the finished product. Eventually, these fans finish movin' and groovin' to the sounds of Timmy Trumpet and head down to the concourse to do whatever they were going to do... but for 90 seconds, they were the inadvertent stars of a Thumbs Down Guy Edwin Diaz video.
I decided to keep filming for the entire top of the 8th inning, even though I was focused on the mighty Citi Field scoreboard and the right field scoreboard the entire time. If I did turn toward the field, here's are the batters you would have seen:
    • Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who in a 3-pitch at-bat is called out on strikes for the first out.
    • Shortstop Trea Turner, who connects with the first pitch he sees for a single on a fly ball to center fielder Tyrone Taylor. Turner is safe on first base.
    • First baseman Bryce Harper, who in a 4-pitch at-bat strikes out swinging for the second out. During this at-bat, Trea Turner would steal second base.
    • Alec Bohm, who in a 4-pitch at-bat grounds out sharply (shortstop Luisangel Acuna to first baseman Pete Alonso) for the third and final out, but not before Trea Turner steals third base..
Now it's time for the 8th Inning Karaoke, but if you want to participate you'll have to pick your own song and play your own record, because this is where the video ends.
The video was shot from section 538, row 1, seat 10.
